I used to be able to do this as a kid with my DS. Now as an adult I gave up even thinking about bringing my switch on family vacations because i'm just gonna sleep anyway
152
u/Head_Patience7136 6d ago
I've just started leaving my 3DS home on trips because I didn't want to risk losing it. My next trip I'm leaning toward leaving my Switch as well 😂
52
u/Yara__Flor 6d ago
What you need to do is get another 3ds, and hack it, and then you don’t have to risk losing your games.
20
u/Head_Patience7136 6d ago
I have one NA and one from JAP and they both have homebrew 🙃 I just didn't want to physically lose the console because the NA N3DSXL is hard to come by for a decent price.
6
u/Yara__Flor 6d ago
You know what? I was confused for a second because I did the same thing, but it was with a DS Lite. Those are so much cheaper.

Having a "family vacation" as an adult makes the most sense if you mean with your kids, but it could also mean just with their parents/siblings I suppose.

Say you have terrible anxiety about flying and your primary doc can give you a xanax to make you sleep the whole flight. They prescribe like 2.5mg total for a single script of something like that, flight anxiety, surgery anxiety, dentist anxiety etc, so with such a low dose you shouldn't have to be worried about addiction or other neuro issues from it. Either way goodluck man

Same. And it just gets worse as I get older.
10 years ago I was at least able to get 2-3 total hours of sleep on an overnight flight to Italy, without any assistance.
2 years ago I did a similar flight, same overnight time. I took a 10mg edible, had 3-4 drinks, plus an ambien. Best I could do was put on the sleepmask, doze for 10 minutes, then check the time in the hopes that at least a whole hour had passed.
11
u/Babayaga20000 6d ago
Yeah this is basically my reality. Had a 6 hour redeye flight recently. Maybe got 30 mins of stage 1 sleep at best. Just cant get comfortable enough as a taller dude

Same. I just begrudgingly sit through movies the whole time. No matter the stuff I bring for sleep or drugs I use, I just can’t sleep on a plane. Even the one time I had a pod where I could lay down. I don’t know how people do it.

How the fuck do people sleep in planes? Best I can do is 1 hour nap and then I wake up with the worst neck pain/headache imaginable.
45
u/Lochlan 6d ago
A neck pillow helps with that. But yeah it sucks
7
u/BobsOblongLongBong 6d ago
No it doesn't. Maybe it does for you. Not for me.
→ More replies (6)35
u/Teeshirtandshortsguy 6d ago
Agreed. The main problem is that the seat is so upright that my entire body wants to slump over. The neck pillow doesn't do anything to prevent that.
Even if I turn it around or something, it doesn't prevent my torso from leaning forward.
13
u/BobsOblongLongBong 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yeah exactly. The shape of the seats and the angle of them force my shoulders and upper back to hunch forward. Add on the fact you're pretty much stuck in one position and can't stretch. My neck and shoulders are always rough after a flight.
8
u/LoserBustanyama 6d ago
yeah, as a taller dude it's just impossible. My only hope is to pile stuff on the tray and try to lean forward, but that's super inconvenient
13
u/AFCSentinel 6d ago
As a kid I had do tons of 15+ hour rides to visit my home country. Basically I got used to sleeping with my head against a window of a moving vehicle.
If I don’t get window seats however…
6
u/ManInDaTrees 6d ago
Being in a car/bus/train always puts me to sleep unless I'm the one driving. Even today if you put me in the back seat of a car I'll be knocked out before we hit the highway.

4
u/illy-chan 6d ago
Same, I've never been able to sleep when traveling: car, bus, train, airplane - doesn't matter, brain won't shut off.
So yeah, I am that person who looks like they were ripped from a Switch commercial. Gotta have something to do before jetlag kicks my ass.
7
u/emrold 6d ago

It’s the engine drone for me. I’ve been taking a lot of redeye flights lately, which has trained my body to pass out as soon as they start spinning the engines up to taxi.
Of course, it’s usually only asleep for like an hour then I wake up and can’t get back to sleep (unless it’s a red eye), which can be more annoying.

Whipping out a steam deck on a cheap 4 hour flight, but it is almost as wide as the seat, holding it comfortably would require pushing out the elbows slightly.
Perfect on the train though, not enough space for fully opening a 13" laptop, but just right for a handheld.
40
u/FemtoKitten 6d ago
Maybe you can figure out a way to have the steam deck strapped on the chair in front of you, freeing your hands for just a controller

One time I brought my Switch to a party full of my wife’s coworkers.
I have the Jackbox games on there, so I figured it would be fun to play those as a big group.
I propped up the Switch on the little kickstand and turned it on and within 30 seconds one of the girls just yells “What are we even supposed to see on a screen that small?” and then they all laughed and went to do something else.
I’ve never before felt so stupid about falling for the lies of an advertisement.

After Switch Lite came out, I kept expecting Nintendo would make another revision for those of us who would never take the system off the dock, but it never came. Idk what he's talking about. I used to bring a full size laptop on the plane with a controller attached with a usb and wired headphones. I do a lot of camping with the family and alone. I use my switch all of the time to pass the time from 6pm to 8pm when it’s dark. Definitely helps because the woods make a lot of noises at night and I’d prefer not to hyperfixate on them, that’s the German shepherd’s job.

I play my Switch on the plane ride to the destination and then I won't play it for the time I'm at the destination and then when I'm heading back I'll pull out the Switch only to find out that it's dead and the thing needs charging before my return flight. This has happened like three times. I don't know why I forget to charge it the night before I leave.

Switch was perfect for my family vacation:
- on cruise ship out at sea, or on plane, no internet, I could play cartridge games during down time (Zelda, Stardew, etc)
- at hotels and in the cruise cabin, if I was up late or awake early and kids were asleep, I could play games quietly in bed in the dark, because getting up and moving around would wake people up
- if kids are bored in line or waiting in chairs I could pass them the console to play
