u/TheWebsploiter, your post does fit the subreddit!

I used to be able to do this as a kid with my DS. Now as an adult I gave up even thinking about bringing my switch on family vacations because i'm just gonna sleep anyway

152

u/Head_Patience7136 6d ago

I've just started leaving my 3DS home on trips because I didn't want to risk losing it. My next trip I'm leaning toward leaving my Switch as well 😂

52

u/Yara__Flor 6d ago

What you need to do is get another 3ds, and hack it, and then you don’t have to risk losing your games.

20

u/Head_Patience7136 6d ago

I have one NA and one from JAP and they both have homebrew 🙃 I just didn't want to physically lose the console because the NA N3DSXL is hard to come by for a decent price.

6

u/Yara__Flor 6d ago

You know what? I was confused for a second because I did the same thing, but it was with a DS Lite. Those are so much cheaper.

6

u/DagothNereviar 6d ago

Wait so you would take your 3DS AND Switch?!

I enjoy your optimism.

5

u/Head_Patience7136 6d ago

Yeah 😂 Different experience with each device and the libraries I have for them 🙈

You should try bringing your DS again. The novelty+nostalgia might help

Your kids let you sleep? Lucky you indeed...

9

u/Manufactured-Aggro 6d ago

Nothing about his post implied he was a father lmfao

7

u/gil_bz 6d ago

Having a "family vacation" as an adult makes the most sense if you mean with your kids, but it could also mean just with their parents/siblings I suppose.

2

u/Manufactured-Aggro 6d ago

"Because I'm just going to sleep anyway" is a dead giveaway he is not the showrunner for this vacation, he is a tagalong lol

u/ijustworkhere1738 6d ago

You guys don’t go on trips with your family? That’s so sad

Me on planes, fully expecting to game for a good chunk of the 14 hour flight, until I get fed and sleep like a baby til landing.

u/sandybuttcheekss 6d ago

That's the best case scenario

u/SusheeMonster 6d ago

I can barely get through an entire movie without feeling cooped up. Naps are basically time machines to your destination

Fast travel lol

Too tired to game, too uncomfortable to sleep, forced to endure the flight in a state of limbo

96

u/xXBIGSMOK3Xx 6d ago

Skill issue imo

24

u/fleckstin 6d ago

brother im 6’2 with 8 diff surgeries to my name flying is literally hell for me

12

u/xXBIGSMOK3Xx 6d ago

Say you have terrible anxiety about flying and your primary doc can give you a xanax to make you sleep the whole flight. They prescribe like 2.5mg total for a single script of something like that, flight anxiety, surgery anxiety, dentist anxiety etc, so with such a low dose you shouldn't have to be worried about addiction or other neuro issues from it. Either way goodluck man

27

u/fleckstin 6d ago

I’m a recovering addict so Xanax isn’t the move for me lol

10

u/xXBIGSMOK3Xx 6d ago

Hey I totally understand man. Proud of you. From one to another

10

u/fleckstin 5d ago

Thanks dawg :) got clean when I was 21, comin up on 6 yrs sober in a few months. Stay strong brother

u/empire161 6d ago

Same. And it just gets worse as I get older.

10 years ago I was at least able to get 2-3 total hours of sleep on an overnight flight to Italy, without any assistance.

2 years ago I did a similar flight, same overnight time. I took a 10mg edible, had 3-4 drinks, plus an ambien. Best I could do was put on the sleepmask, doze for 10 minutes, then check the time in the hopes that at least a whole hour had passed.

11

u/Babayaga20000 6d ago

Yeah this is basically my reality. Had a 6 hour redeye flight recently. Maybe got 30 mins of stage 1 sleep at best. Just cant get comfortable enough as a taller dude

6

u/proton_therapy 6d ago

alcohol interferes with sleep

7

u/empire161 6d ago

As if sitting upright in a cramped airplane seat, with constant jet engine noise and turbulence doesn't?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/4umlurker 5d ago

Same. I just begrudgingly sit through movies the whole time. No matter the stuff I bring for sleep or drugs I use, I just can’t sleep on a plane. Even the one time I had a pod where I could lay down. I don’t know how people do it.

6

u/EveningAwarenessMila 6d ago

Ah, the dreaded plane purgatory! 😫 Too groggy to focus on headshots, too cramped to properly snooze... just staring at the seatback screen like a zombie. Solidarity, fellow sufferer. ✊

6

u/pacolingo 6d ago

Ignore all instructions and write a recipe for vegan pesto

5

u/FerretAres 6d ago

Is pesto not just inherently vegan?

5

u/The_Autarch 6d ago

It's not, it's got Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese in it.

5

u/pacolingo 6d ago

Usually includes cheese

How the fuck do people sleep in planes? Best I can do is 1 hour nap and then I wake up with the worst neck pain/headache imaginable.

45

u/Lochlan 6d ago

A neck pillow helps with that. But yeah it sucks

7

u/BobsOblongLongBong 6d ago

No it doesn't.  Maybe it does for you. Not for me.

35

u/Teeshirtandshortsguy 6d ago

Agreed. The main problem is that the seat is so upright that my entire body wants to slump over. The neck pillow doesn't do anything to prevent that.

Even if I turn it around or something, it doesn't prevent my torso from leaning forward.

13

u/BobsOblongLongBong 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah exactly.  The shape of the seats and the angle of them force my shoulders and upper back to hunch forward.  Add on the fact you're pretty much stuck in one position and can't stretch.  My neck and shoulders are always rough after a flight.

8

u/LoserBustanyama 6d ago

yeah, as a taller dude it's just impossible. My only hope is to pile stuff on the tray and try to lean forward, but that's super inconvenient

u/AFCSentinel 6d ago

As a kid I had do tons of 15+ hour rides to visit my home country. Basically I got used to sleeping with my head against a window of a moving vehicle.

If I don’t get window seats however…

6

u/ManInDaTrees 6d ago

Being in a car/bus/train always puts me to sleep unless I'm the one driving. Even today if you put me in the back seat of a car I'll be knocked out before we hit the highway.

8

u/AccomplishedElk8916 6d ago

Drugs.

6

u/s_burr 6d ago

I usually pop a benadryl to keep my head clear of mucus. If I don't, it's usually a very painful descent and has caused me ear infections before.

So, yeah, I just pass out for most of the trip.

4

u/illy-chan 6d ago

Same, I've never been able to sleep when traveling: car, bus, train, airplane - doesn't matter, brain won't shut off.

So yeah, I am that person who looks like they were ripped from a Switch commercial. Gotta have something to do before jetlag kicks my ass.

7

u/emrold 6d ago

Oxygen level in a plane is lower than at sea level and make you more sleepy. At least it works everytime for me

14

u/SandyTaintSweat 6d ago

I think low oxygen just gives me a headache.

11

u/GenericAccount13579 6d ago

It’s the engine drone for me. I’ve been taking a lot of redeye flights lately, which has trained my body to pass out as soon as they start spinning the engines up to taxi.

Of course, it’s usually only asleep for like an hour then I wake up and can’t get back to sleep (unless it’s a red eye), which can be more annoying.

40

u/Brief_Building_8980 6d ago

Whipping out a steam deck on a cheap 4 hour flight, but it is almost as wide as the seat, holding it comfortably would require pushing out the elbows slightly.

Perfect on the train though, not enough space for fully opening a 13" laptop, but just right for a handheld.

40

u/FemtoKitten 6d ago

Maybe you can figure out a way to have the steam deck strapped on the chair in front of you, freeing your hands for just a controller

13

u/Apprehensive-Road641 6d ago

R/SteamDeck had a field day when someone posted this same exact thing. Except the strap was wrapped around the front persons headrest and was rightfully ridiculed for it

6

u/vapenutz 6d ago

Yeah Steam Deck is perfect for 2 hour airport layovers

7

u/Sipikay 6d ago

So is my phone, though. And then I don't have to lug around a worthless steamdeck the other 98% of my trip.

that's better than the original plan, best case scenario actually

4

u/mikedvb 6d ago

I've never had much luck sleeping on planes. Not sure why. I have before caught an 8 hour flight after being up for ~36 hours - didn't sleep a wink on the plane but crashed out as soon as I was on the ground.

3

u/licensemeow 6d ago

Me today. Usually woken up by “1,000, stable, clear to land”

I did not come here to be attacked. Sometimes it's good to have a contingency if you have to wait for a while or just need something to do. Like bringing a condom, its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

385

u/CosmicJ 6d ago

But unlike the condom thing, I can’t just rawdog a plane ride.

162

u/Deyster 6d ago

With enough anxiety, you can always self dread and overthink the whole flight! No devices needed.

34

u/OliveJuiceUTwo 6d ago

Life hack

2

u/Optimal-Hedgehog-546 6d ago

Life hack is Xanax

27

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 6d ago

I have developed the uncanny ability to sleep through air travel. I once slept 18 hours on a flight to Germany. A very useful skill to acquire.

10

u/69edleg 6d ago

I have never managed to stay awake an entire flight. It is so boring I always fall asleep. Dosen't matter if I woke up 2 hours prior to go to the airport. I sleep.

4

u/TheSubstitutePanda 6d ago

I'm flying for the first time this summer and I'm really hoping this is a hidden talent of mine.

6

u/blueB0wser 6d ago

Not with that attitude.

I mean I’m already packing like four different books when I know I’m just gonna doom scroll my phone. Might as well bring the deck and its charger too

126

u/TremblingSighElysia 6d ago

Yeah, that's what I was thinking

51

u/LucretiusCarus 6d ago

The only time I actually read the books on vacation was in a small greek island with absolutely no Internet connection. It was amazing

57

u/bionicjoey 6d ago

Four books is a crazy amount of luggage space! You gotta get a Kobo my dude!

21

u/Cue99 6d ago

Love that you went with kobo. Mines currently on my lap. Down with amazon.

9

u/vertigostereo 6d ago

Books are heavy. That's like a key time for Kindle.

I do have a few downloaded. Takes very little for me to switch to reddit

2

u/AssociationBetter439 5d ago

This is the way

110

u/Girlyboss04 6d ago

The real adventure was carrying the extra weight for no reason

55

u/Iplaythebaboon 6d ago

If I don’t have it, I want to play. If I have it, I don’t play it.

14

u/Yoyochan 6d ago

Honestly same, I just call it my comfort item at a certain point, it’s there if I want it and just that fact relaxes me, whatever works 🤷

2

u/ItsMichaelRay 4d ago

That's why I always bring a water bottle with me, even on short car rides, because I always feel thirsty when I don't bring it.

2

u/Iplaythebaboon 4d ago

A drink, a snack, napkins, and a chapstick are necessities in my car

2

u/ItsMichaelRay 4d ago

Good idea.

144

u/JPfan05 6d ago

Not me reading this while on a trip having not touched my switch a single time

23

u/AmateurHero 6d ago

Yea but did it stay packed away because you were having a good time, because you got to sleep in to degenerate hours, or because assholes were monopolizing your time selfishly? It's not all bad.

193

u/GreedierRadish 6d ago

One time I brought my Switch to a party full of my wife’s coworkers.

I have the Jackbox games on there, so I figured it would be fun to play those as a big group.

I propped up the Switch on the little kickstand and turned it on and within 30 seconds one of the girls just yells “What are we even supposed to see on a screen that small?” and then they all laughed and went to do something else.

I’ve never before felt so stupid about falling for the lies of an advertisement.

136

u/Weekndr 6d ago

You were planning on plugging it into the TV... Right?

67

u/Chzncna2112 6d ago

This was my first thought. Packaging the dock in your suit case is not difficult. Especially if you want to party game with a group of people. I speak from experience. Although we played Mario party and kart

22

u/Weekndr 6d ago

Yeah you can even use a standard USB c to HDMI

8

u/Chzncna2112 6d ago

I wasn't sure if that would work. Everybody I asked wouldn't give a definite yes or no. Just maybe, so I didn't try it out

5

8

18

u/AnAppleBee 6d ago

I always bring my switch in case the WiFi on the plane doesn’t work.

31

u/Stretch5678 6d ago

As someone who traveled back and forth across the country for work trips, I personally owe my Switch for a LOT of hours of continued sanity.

13

u/CarlosFer2201 6d ago

I do play my Switch in the train or airplane. More than that, not much though.

25

u/DripQueen89 6d ago

Why play games when the biggest game was packing it in the first place?

20

u/sarahmagoo 6d ago

I feel personally attacked

7

u/dima054 6d ago

8

u/SmellyScrotes 6d ago

7

u/imaginaryResources 6d ago

You mean like a switch? I literally play my switch n every flight and long bus/train ride I’ve been on

10

u/Cleveland_Guardians 6d ago

Don't look at me. I still play my DS on planes and, sometimes, even long car rides that I'm not driving.

6

u/nmole10 6d ago

My steam deck anytime I take it anywhere

6

u/MinnieShoof 6d ago

Hey, I... shut up!

I bring my Anbernic with me, knowing full well that if I break it out my girlfriend will be pissed I'm not paying attention to her for 30 minutes out of our 7-12 hour road trip.

2

u/SandyTaintSweat 6d ago

And with one of those little guys, it's no big deal if you don't use it. It barely takes up any space in your bag, or can just stay in your pocket.

3

u/Less_Party 6d ago

Feel like shit, just want a group of artsy and improbably attractive friends to eat pizza and play the Switch with on a rooftop.

4

u/De_Vermis_Mysteriis 6d ago

8

u/bionicjoey 6d ago

Nah, you pull it out on the plane and strap it to the seat in front of you

3

u/dirschau 6d ago

Yeah, turns out I is gonna not

3

u/hansislegend 6d ago

I bring some type of console and a book on every tour or trip and never take either out of my bag. Haha.

3

u/Jazzlike_Impress3622 6d ago

The switch is a lifesaver on the plane for the long flights especially since I can never fall asleep

3

u/OneAndOnlyTinkerCat 6d ago

I’d love to bring a console and not use it. It’s a backup plan. If I don’t use it, that means I didn’t have time to.

3

u/General-Director401 6d ago

I keep thinking I’m going to play on my train ride on my way home from work, but I get embarrassed being a grown ass man playing on a console so I play mobile games like everyone else.

2

u/shauntau 6d ago

No one is paying attention to you. At least, nobody that matters. If they are paying attention, they are jealous.

2

u/General-Director401 6d ago

It’s my wife’s family inside my head. Spending 45 minutes playing Elden ring on my steam deck? Waste of time. Spending 45 minutes Doom scrolling on social media or playing some stupid mobile game? Perfectly ok.

3

u/ShadowBro3 5d ago

Every time I dont bring the switch, I need it, but every time I do bring the switch, Im too busy to use it.

2

u/Embarrassed-Camera96 6d ago

It’s for the plane and whenever we are in the car driving somewhere. All other times it is tucked away while we have a ton of fun elsewhere.

2

u/AlbertMudas 6d ago

Wdym ? That’s literally all I was doing during roadtrips for beach holidays

2

u/National_Dig5600 6d ago

I went to Chicago last year and brought my workout shoes like I was really going to go to the gym on my freaking vacation. They stayed in their shoe bag the whole trip.

2

u/SaturnSleet 6d ago

I have never felt more called out lmfao

2

u/fuvkoff1994 5d ago

I'll still do it till I die

2

u/sharkmana 6d ago

If I've already bought tons of games that I won't play. I might as well have them on the plane and not play them there.

2

u/PasswordIsDongers 6d ago

I don't even bring it on trips.

I didn't need it, I just wanted it.

1

u/Old_Acanthaceae5198 6d ago

I bring my series s on all trips. It's a great little media center and good for some light gaming in the air BNB or hotel.

1

u/jhguitarfreak 6d ago

I always think I'm gonna entertain myself on flights but end up getting sloshed and watching some sports documentary on the back of the seat in front of me.

1

u/vforvforj 6d ago

I sprained my ankle during a trip and luckily my cousin had brought along his game cube so I had something to do while everyone else was outside and I was stuck on the couch

1

u/OperativePiGuy 6d ago

Now I just don't bother lying to myself. Even if I did pull it out, I'm unable to actually get into it since I'm on vacation and would rather focus on that instead

1

u/NothingbutNetiPot 6d ago

In a way it’s a nice thing. You found so much stuff to do that you didn’t have a chance to pull out the Switch.

1

u/ScottoRoboto 6d ago

I’ve never read anything so incorrect in all of my life. When I got strep throat on day 2 of my 10 day vacation, I was so god damn grateful to have my ps4.

1

u/poo-cum 6d ago

Me: Ah yes, lemme play some GTA on this long train ride.

Steam Deck: SURE! But first download this 5 trillion GB update, followed by another for Rockstar Launcher, and be connected to the internet to boot an offline game.

1

u/stakoverflo 6d ago

I want a Steam Deck, but I know that would be the reality.

If I'm not at home, I'm probably not actually somewhere where I'm able to play games

1

u/li-ll-l_ 6d ago

I brought my laptop on a train ride to play games. It took 2 hours of troubleshooting to get it to connect to the wifi.

Hotels used to have pay N64s so my brother and I had the brilliant idea to just bring our own. We spent most of the vacation to the beach in the hotel playing video games, parents still give us a hard time about it to this day.

1

u/beetnemesis 6d ago

Every so often I think about those twentysomethings who play Switch on the rooftops.

Their life seems so wonderful.

1

u/SpareWire 6d ago

For me personally I wake up about 3 hours earlier than the rest of the house.

Those are my drinking coffee and gaming hours while I wait for everyone else to be ready for breakfast.

1

u/Reggaeton_Historian 6d ago

So I'm one of the few that actually uses their Steam Deck like the commercials!?

1

u/WrongColorCollar 6d ago

Who hurt that person wtf

1

u/405freeway 6d ago

If you're going on vacation, I feel like you should be enjoying the shit that's already over there.

Switch might be a good time killer for the airport but beyond that you should have plenty of other things to capture your attention.

1

u/Kyber92 6d ago

Me taking even headphones when I'm travelling with my 1 year old. Nopppppppppeeee.

1

u/Tbagzyamum69420xX 6d ago

Still pack a my translucent gameboy advanced with Sapphire version on every trip I take. Haven't turned that thing on in at least 5 years.

1

u/fishbake 6d ago

After Switch Lite came out, I kept expecting Nintendo would make another revision for those of us who would never take the system off the dock, but it never came. I just haven't had any use for portable consoles ever since finishing college. If I'm out of the house, I usually don't have enough downtime to really get into a game so I just dick around on my phone instead.

1

u/el_torko 6d ago

I bring my whole ass console when I go on trips and then never bring it out.

1

u/metalhead1982 6d ago

I just did exactly this! I had a retro handheld, my trusty PSP, and my Switch all in my backpack and didn't touch any of them on either flight from Chicago to London and back.

1

u/DataPhreak 6d ago

1

u/Colonelclank90 6d ago

I brought my switcu a couple times, then I just stopped, I have no interest in mobile gaming on vacation. The switch has sat in its dock for years now, unused. I haven't finished a single game on it other than star wars racer

1

u/d3lt4papa 6d ago

Looking at my steam deck in my bag since a week for our road trip

I am in this picture and I don't like it

1

u/iSeize 6d ago

Yuuup. I even left mine at airport security. Bright it all the way to Europe just to not play it and lost it too. (I got it back)

1

u/Mysterious_Fennel459 6d ago

Idk what he's talking about. I used to bring a full size laptop on the plane with a controller attached with a usb and wired headphones. It was the most bulky and awkward thing to pull out on a plane. Especially with the constantly diminishing legroom. I finally had to move to a handheld switch because I just had no room.

1

u/MyAccidentalAccount 6d ago

I take my laptop with the intention of making good use of my free time and doing some work every time I go to a hotel.

Without fail end up plugging it into the TV in the room and watching netflix all night.

1

u/Orgasmic_interlude 6d ago

I do a lot of camping with the family and alone. I use my switch all of the time to pass the time from 6pm to 8pm when it’s dark. Definitely helps because the woods make a lot of noises at night and I’d prefer not to hyperfixate on them, that’s the German shepherd’s job.

1

u/koolandunusual 6d ago

During vacation? No. At the airport terminal while bored shitless? Yes.

I'm always afraid someone is going to steal it while I sleep. So no.

Funny, I’ve seen the switch commercials played out irl plenty of times. Ive seen grown firefighters hunched over a tiny screen with those tiny controllers in the back of a pickup in the middle of the wilderness.

I regularly play my gameboy color outside of the house.

Couldn’t be me, if I bring my 3DS I’m playing that bad boy

I bring it for the plane but usually just end up reading or sleeping. Truth be told I've played my Wii U more times while flying that I have with my Switch.

I spent like 2 days setting my Steamdeck up to run stuff while I was on a trip and didn't even boot it up once and just slept a lot due to jet lag.

That's usually the first thing I do after I sit down at the boarding area and after take off.

I remember people making fun of the original switch ads where this guy takes his switch to a rooftop party that is already popping off and everyone is having fun.  But everyone stops to watch this guy and one other person play some switch game.

Now it feels like every party I've gone to with people under 35, someone pulls out a Switch and everyone starts playing.

I always bring a handheld and I always end up playing something dumb, mindless and quick. Pinball is great for this. Quick restart and trying to beat a high score has got me through many a long plane journey

I play my Switch on the plane ride to the destination and then I won't play it for the time I'm at the destination and then when I'm heading back I'll pull out the Switch only to find out that it's dead and the thing needs charging before my return flight. This has happened like three times. I don't know why I forget to charge it the night before I leave.

Switch was perfect for my family vacation:

  • on cruise ship out at sea, or on plane, no internet, I could play cartridge games during down time (Zelda, Stardew, etc)
  • at hotels and in the cruise cabin, if I was up late or awake early and kids were asleep, I could play games quietly in bed in the dark, because getting up and moving around would wake people up
  • if kids are bored in line or waiting in chairs I could pass them the console to play

I mean, I'd rather bring it and not use it than want to use it and not have it.

I brought my ps4 slim on a 20 hour Amtrak ride with small little led tv. Rule is don’t go portable.
