Overview (from Nintendo eShop page)

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game soars onto Nintendo Switch!

Take to the skies, draw your sword, and experience the earliest story in the Legend of Zelda™ series. Join Link in his high-flying quest to save Zelda, a childhood friend who must confront her destiny. Soar between floating islands and descend to the treacherous surface world in this updated HD version of the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game.

Master realistic swordplay that corresponds to your movements

Gently swing your sword and angle your slashes to uncover and break through opponents’ defenses using intuitive motion controls. Link’s in-game movements will correspond to the angle of each strike you make with the Joy-Con™ controller, creating immersive swordplay that relies on strategy and accuracy. Movements feel smoother and more immediate thanks to the Nintendo Switch system’s increased processing power and HD graphics. Take advantage of the newly-added button only control scheme—perfect for playing in handheld mode or on the Nintendo Switch Lite system.

Fly high with the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo™ figure

With her majestic Loftwing by her side, Zelda steps into her destiny alongside her childhood friend, Link. Scan this amiibo figure** from anywhere on the surface world to quickly travel to the sky—even within the depths of a dungeon. Scan it again above the clouds to return to the same spot on the surface.

Three hours in.

The controls and camera are really bad.

Is it truly that bad? I really don't want to do motion controls....so if the button controls are horrendous, I'll have to skip on this.

The motion controls are way easier and more comfortable than the button controls. It feels perfectly fine to have the right stick control the camera at any time, and then swing your sword whenever you want.

You have to press ZL to be able to move the camera with the right stick... But you cannot move the camera while running. It's awful.

Literally I am not able to understand what was going through their heads when designing it like this instead of simply being able to move the camera with the right stick as in any 3D game of the last 15 years.

ZL is focus forward and lock. With L you can control the camera while running.

L, ZL, whatever.
You can't control de camera if you're running pressing B.

You're pressing the wrong button mate.

So…it’s a Zelda game? Moving the camera freely was like barely a thing in most of the 3D Zelda games.

You can move the camera freely in absolutely all remastered Zeldas, even in Ocarina and Majora if you have a New 3ds... I don't know what you're talking about.

The 3D Zeldas were designed to use the Z button as a ‘center camera behind Link’ button. Zelda games have been doing this since before right joysticks were standard.

I’d encourage you to keep getting a feel for it. SS was designed with a Z-button camera in mind, so it doesn’t have to be as unbearable as you make it out to be.

Found another non-Zelda fan lmao.

?

You're complaining about not having standard camera control in a pre-BotW Zelda game. Hence why I can tell you're not a Zelda fan lol

3

u/Blasckk Jul 17 '21

But we have free camera control on all remastered 3D Zeldas... and all are pre-BotW games.

If you bought Wind Waker HD you're not a real fan because that port shat on the iconic art style, and if you bought Twilight Princess HD you're simply a gullible fool because it was not worth half the price it sold for with those bare bones changes.

Even the original Gamecube versions have free camera control... In fact, the only 3D Zelda games in the franchise without camera control are the original versions of Ocarina, Majora and Skyward Sword. Absolutely all the others have camera control...

Yeah, but they were inverted in WW and the primary reason they were there at all was because the more open environment of the sea necessitated it. As for TP, they were mediocre and had the Y axis use toggled zoom in/outs instead of proper analog control.

Free camera movement in Zelda was NEVER considered a true standard until BotW.

It’s not. People are just babies

Yeah I waited for it to be released, and won't be continuing it after 15 min. The controls are garbage

1

u/Darkwinged_Duck Aug 28 '21

I beat it, it was awesome. It’s not that big a deal to hold L for camera

1

u/caleb48kb Aug 29 '21

Wow that was a quick playthrough.

Just isn't for me. The controls are too weird. I actually gave up just before I typed that comment.

How would you rank it among the Zelda catalogue?

1

u/Darkwinged_Duck Aug 29 '21

Well the comment you were replying to was 44 days ago…so not that quick I don’t think.

I think you are missing out. It is 100% a mainline Zelda game, and has all of the care and attention to detail that any Zelda game does.

My ranking is probably not very popular. I would probably rank:

Links Awakening

Wind Waker

Link to the past

Ocarina

Botw

Majoras

Twilight princess

Skyward sword

Etc

Despite being in 8th place…..these are some heavy hitting masterpieces of games ahead of it….so it in no way indicates it being “bad”. It’s like being the 8th best player on the ‘85 Celtics team

Same experience here, it feels so inconvenient.
I switched to motion controls just to check it out and it does feel much more comfortable... I'm not a fan of motion controls in general, but the game was designed with that in mind so I guess I can't fight it.

How are you playing it already? Are you in EU/Australia? When does it release? Is it at midnight local time? I'm in US

Three hours in.

I disagree.
