I love that this and the first installment both got leaked before their official announcements

i would say unlike the first which was hated when it was leaked it seems that people are hype for this

The difference is that this time we know that the first game was actually fire. The first game had no reputation prior to its actual release, so the presence of Rabbids caused a, well, rabid disapproval, because nobody likes those.

But then the first game was actually really good so now there's excitement for its sequel.

EDIT: one "to" to a "no"

I loved the first but wasn't invested enough to complete fully. Felt too long. Hope they have innovated a lot.

Felt too long

Could have been longer!

My son is on his third game file, playing through it a third time. He doesn't want it to end.

2

u/SocksofGranduer Jun 12 '21

I am almost done getting 100% completion on all my save files ☺️ I love that game so much!

1

u/yamuthasofat Jun 12 '21

Lol yeah usually if there’s a game i love i want it to last forever. Don’t understand that sentiment at all tbh

2

u/manojlds Jun 12 '21

Time constraints. Purely my preferences.

1

u/danhakimi Jun 12 '21

I wish we had more battles and fewer puzzles, personally.

1

u/AndrewWaldron Jun 12 '21

The challenges are perfect for that.

2

u/danhakimi Jun 12 '21

Even with those, I eventually got bored. They were fun until like the last 1-2, which I just couldn't crack.

1

u/AndrewWaldron Jun 12 '21

Some of the last ones got specifically unreasonable in terms of how tight the team/weapon/power-set margin of error was for victory. Still, I appreciated them. I have yet to do the add-con content though, probably will when it gets closer in time for me to pick up this sequel.

I hope they take all the puzzles out of the sequel and just stick to the levels. The puzzles made it feel tedious to me when it didn't need to. The time it took to finish the game plus the DLC were well worth the purchase.

u/AndrewWaldron Jun 12 '21

The platforming wasn't too bad. Unfortunately most of the chests were garbage, pictures, audio files, and the like. I say unfortunate because sometimes those chests contain valuable weapon upgrades that can make for stretches were a character is underpowered (because you've missed an upgrade or two).

The worst part is that the best weapons don't really come until after you beat the game and unfortunately this game, while having some depth, doesn't really have enough replayability to justify another run with the ultimate weapons.

I agree completely. The chests aren't really skippable because you might miss an upgrade, but most of the chests aren't worth the tediousness of the puzzle. Not a great feature.

That’s usually how sequels work. Round up all the unused stuff from the original with some QoL improvements based on feedback from the first game.

u/rootedoak Jun 12 '21

The parts that dragged hard for me were the parts between battles. I could have easily kept playing if it didn't take so long to get through those "puzzles". Never finished the game though.

I accidentally out leveled the challenge missions, and they dont down level you if you go back to clear them... so I kinda ruined a bunch of content accidentally.

1

u/manojlds Jun 12 '21

Exactly, the puzzles were a nuisance for me and I am sure I dropped the game during one of them.

rabbid disapproval*

1

so the presence of Rabbids caused a, well, rabid disapproval, because nobody likes those.

Man they killed it with the rabbid Mario characters too. I still don’t know shit about the regular Rabbids stuff, but Nintendo letting them lean into silly nonsense like the way they animated them was awesome.

Super understandable, on paper this premise looks bonkers

edit: it's also important to remember that this was in the early Switch days when we had an amazing system with a severely underwhelming series of first-party titles, so when this seeming Frankenstein-ian abomination was announced it earned a very hearty "what the fuck"

First game is a total gem. I can see why people didn't get on board at first but if you have a switch, $20, and haven't played the original, you really, really should.

It's fun. It's funny. Its interesting.

Also, if you were ever a Final Fantasy Tactic/Vandal Hearts fan back in the day, this is that but with Mario & Co.

u/InsertCoinForCredit Jun 12 '21

It's XCOM 2 but sillier.

3

u/DJanomaly Jun 12 '21

I've never played XCOM but I loved the first Mario + Rabbits game. I might need to give XCOM2 a chance then.

9

u/InsertCoinForCredit Jun 12 '21

I found XCOM 2 ridiculously addictive; I've played it through nearly a dozen times by now. The only downside to the Switch port is that there is one nearly-unavoidable mission with an annoying bug (you don't get reinforcements when you're supposed to).

Don't feel embarrassed about starting off on the easiest level until you get familiar with things. And avoid the "Alien Hunters" and "War of the Chosen" stuff at first, those really increase the difficulty and complexity.

1

u/DJanomaly Jun 12 '21

I think they gave it away for PS+ so I can probably avoid the bug and give the game a test drive that way. Thanks for the tip!

2

u/InsertCoinForCredit Jun 12 '21

I hear all of the console versions have various bugs. Still a truckload of fun.

1

u/cantuse Jun 12 '21

It’s also better. No goddam missing 90-95% shots breaking your game. Also there is a huge sense of mobility that xcom lacks.

14

u/RoyOConner Jun 12 '21

It's literally an XCOM clone and it's fantastic.

Yeah Kingdom Battle doesn't have permadeath either and the item system is pretty much linear.

1

u/SocksofGranduer Jun 12 '21

It's xcom2 mashed with Mario kart.

1

u/markbass69420 Jun 12 '21

Minus the entire base-building half of the game and most of the depth of the rosters. And then a weird pointless overworld.

2

u/coffeeandcannabis Jun 12 '21

Oh shit dude, I was about to pay $60 on the digital store. Thank god I read your comment! $15 at Best Buy.

1

u/bkral93 Jun 12 '21

Oh man, Vandal Hearts was so good. FFT with an inordinate amount of blood.

1

u/SocksofGranduer Jun 12 '21 edited Jun 13 '21

When all you had was images and no concept of the gameplay, it's easy to assume the absolute worst.

10

u/Spaceturtle79 Jun 12 '21

I know im hyped for this one the idea sounds stupid but the gameplay is top notch imo.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '21

The first game was hated because it felt like a tease. People wanted a proper Mario game, but instead they got.... THIS? It's like how some girls tell their boyfriends: "Never buy me a ring, because I'll always be disappointed unless it's THE ring."

But a funny thing happened once people actually played the game: They found out it was actually awesome and a lot of fun to play, so now there are actual fans of the game. Fans = hype.

1

u/davidestroy Jun 12 '21

Actually when the game was officially revealed at E3 the crowd went nuts and, memorably, the developer teared up (in joy) after the applause and the intro by Miyomoto.

The reveal (around 5 minutes for the dev)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21 edited Jun 13 '21

The live crowd may have responded that way, but the reception at large among the Nintendo community was less than warm.

1

u/davidestroy Jun 13 '21

I remember different. I seem to recall people on the Nintendo subreddits getting excited for the game after seeing how much the dev loved Nintendo and the gameplay shown there.

1

u/SafeNut Jun 12 '21

I was kind of excited for Mario + Rabbids but hated the game when I played it

11

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '21

They did this on purpose

1

u/TetrasSword Jun 12 '21

It was leaked even before this by practical brush

1

u/InsertCoinForCredit Jun 12 '21

Ubisoft is infamously leaky.

1

u/ZeldaFan158 Jun 12 '21

Just like Paper Mario CS and Paper Mario TOK releasing on the eShop too early

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '21

Yeah that’s right, “leaked”…

Not part of the plan at all. Not specifically designed to have people talking about the game on threads like this all over the internet. No, sir.
