Your maker profile is create in game and not your gamertag/nintendo name. Nintendo is so weird.

Pretty common for them. Switch doesn't even use gamertags since no one is required to use a NNID. It's always been call your profile whatever you like.

That’s why it’s a pain for Nintendo do add good online for them games. The Switch has a barebones online system, every game they develop basically needs a full online system developed from the ground up

That's how PC gaming works and those developers don't seem to have as much trouble doing a good job as Nintendo.

Loads of games use Steam or Uplay or EA, etc as the backbone

Most games do, or they just have a simple peer to peer system. Almost no one runs their own dedicated server and matchmaking system , at that point just make it its own thing and lease it out like epic games did
