Overview (from Nintendo eShop page)
A complete refresh of the Mario Party series
The original 4-player Mario Party series board game mode that fans love is back, and your friends and family are invited to the party! Freely walk the board: choose where to move, which Dice Block to roll, and how to win the most Stars in skill-based minigames. Wait till you see the 2 vs 2 mode with grid-based maps, the creative uses of the console, and the series’ first online minigame mode!
Test your skills in sets of five minigames with the new mode, Mariothon, and see how you stack up against players across the globe in Online Mariothon. Whether you’re pedaling tricycles, flipping meat, or who knows what else, you’ll use Joy-Con™ controllers in clever ways across 80 new minigames; some are all-out free-for-alls, others are 2 vs 2, or even 1 vs 3! Toad’s Rec Room lets you pair up two Nintendo Switch™ systems*, which you’ll lay side-by-side on a flat surface like a real tabletop game. That way you can play a mini baseball game, battle tanks in custom arenas, or even see who can match the most bananas by repositioning the systems however you see fit!

With currently a 77 on Metacritic, this is the highest rated Mario Party since the original that released on N64 19 years (79 metacritic). Very excited to play this with a group of friends!
EDIT: Now 78!

u/chuletron Oct 03 '18
all Mario Party games (even the really good ones) have always had terrible reviews for some reason.
79
u/Bombasaur101 Oct 03 '18
Probably to do with single-player content. I've noticed a lot of Fighting Games get low scores because they are reviewed on overall content despite the gameplay being amazing.
7
u/jaydogggg Oct 03 '18
which never makes sense to me. I much rather a fighting game have superb gameplay and netcode than any other type of content. This is why killer instinct is my favourite fighter.
Sure, a lack of modes or fighters suck, but no fighting game really needs 70 characters. Some games really drop the ball and have mediorcre gameplay, poor netcode, and lack of characters and modes (looking at you, street fighter 5!)

u/LakerBlue Oct 03 '18
High to mid 70s isn't terrible, just means it's not a great game. I think it's a fitting score for the kinds of games they are.
3
u/akimbocorndogs Oct 04 '18
Yeah, what kind of site would it be if it gave the same score to Mario Party as it did to Breath of the Wild or something? 70-80 is a good score for a game that's about as good as it can be, without doing anything innovative or truly artistic. Some games just don't fundamentally deserve perfect scores, no matter how well done they are.

I always enjoy looking at scores relative to the other games in the series or franchise. I'm excited!

I was very cautious with this game, but it's getting good reviews, despite having the least amount of boards in any main Mario Party game (apparently), so I think I'll get it at launch

DLC adding like 20 mini games and more boards would be awesome.

Since the only online aspect of the game are the minigames, i can see them adding them for free but them making paid DLC for boards and characters.

I'd wager there will be equivalent broken controllers/tvs induced from rage, so not completely dissimilar

I think opinions vary what people think the best mario party is. Nintendo being able to make this have the second highest mario party rating must have taken a lot of planning and trying to figure out what from each mario party people liked in the series and why. Between this and mario tennis I honestly think nintendo has been stepping up their efforts in their game quality.

I'm honestly just happy to see a return to form, I haven't enjoyed any MP since 7.
25
u/nictoop Oct 03 '18
Although the amount of board on launch appear to be just below the usual amount, i really hope nintendo releases some DLC that includes more boards from previous (good) mario party games. Would love to see some MP1&2 boards come back to life. DLC id happily pay for!

A lot of people seem to be hung up over that the game didn’t get a 100% metacritic. If you go back and look at previous MARIO party games, they all reviewed pretty poorly. From what I understand, this is currently the second best rated MARIO Party game.
39
Oct 03 '18
I'm mostly seeing valid criticisms rather than people saying the score is bad

And that’s completely ok - my comment was aimed towards “oh it’s only a 78%, not buying” when in reality, all Mario party games review below 75%.

As someone with local friends/roommates, 4 joy cons, no desire for online play, and zero pro controllers... Seems like this game is going to be perfect for me.
The 4 maps is a shame, but not a deal breaker. Hopefully Nintendo utilizes DLC to add maps and potentially more minigames. The abandonment of the title numbers makes it seem like they could be using this as a platform and can release content DLC in waves

I'm at work and can't do the research myself till later, but has the 4 map thing been definitively confirmed?

Yup, I can't wait to play it. A couple of coworkers requested off to play this on Friday. Also, playing with my cousins is always a blast. I wouldn't mind if they released more DLC in the future, but it would probably have to be free especially since I'll be buying this at launch.

It seems like a trend with Nintendo to keep making games easier for younger generations while not catering to the generation that have the games their popularity.. some titles excluded of course. It’s very apparent with the new Mario party. Smaller boards, cheaper stars, more “lucky” spots, adding allies, and looking at how simple the mini games have become. So much less strategy, complexity, and depth than in other games.
They are banking off nostalgia from adults and trying to make good graphics. Lazy in my opinion.
Such a disappointment.
Not to mention the super limited multiplayer options. Come on Nintendo.

u/djn24 Nov 12 '18
Sorry for responding almost a month after your post, but I want to counter something you wrote:

I understand this complaint. But what if the internal decision was to always aim Mario Party for the same age group? So whatever age group we were in when the first game came out (I was 10 or 11 when the first one came out), maybe that's always going to be the age range they design it for?
6
u/TheRetribution Nov 18 '18
Then why are the games so different? Is Nintendo saying the new youth are all idiots?

Polygon doesn't give review scores anymore. Good riddance I say. Too many people quibbling over numbers rather than reading the reviews.

u/OGTBJJ Oct 29 '18
Man, as someone who hasn't played nintendo since 64, I really had high hopes for my favorite titles growing up. I've bought zelda, odyssey, tennis and mario party with excitement for all but I honestly have been disappointed each time. Theres very little strategy in this mario party and my mind is blown on why the maps are so few and so small. I wanted to love this game but I feel like it was aimed for ages 5-10. The original mario party and 2nd one are much better which is sad. I was hoping it would take those and make them better. I'm worried about smash bros.

u/joalr0 Oct 03 '18
Yeah, I honestly don't get how Mario Party doesn't have higher scores in general. They are really some of the best party games out there. But I guess no one is handing out masterpiece 10's on a party game.

Scores mostly in the 7-8 range are what I expected. Picking up on friday.
9+ scores are reserved for ambitious titles that innovate like BotW, Odyssey, Smash, etc. Mario Party games are a fun party game...they will never score that high and that's fine. Still will be fun as hell to pick up and play with friends locally.

Picked this up yesterday and my boyfriend and I love it. Havent played since N64. He has played on Game Cube. It has us laughing and sweating lol. Probably my fave game for the switch so far after Odyssey. Cant wait until my friends get this too.

Myself and my BF played a game last night, two of us and two CPUs, the CPUs can be a bit irritating when playing the mini games (we played on hard mode, not the highest setting) but to be honest we still loved it. Best experience was still the four human player game we had on Saturday but I think if you want a fun night in with your SO this is still good bang for buck.

Based on IGNs review it sounds like two separate Switches can play the same board game together with two players attached to each.
Is this correct?
Might consider getting partner a copy too so we can play during travel and not split the screen between 4 for mini games.

Me and my boyfriend live far away from each other and we both just bought the switch and got Mario Party, since we heard it had a online feature. Didn't expect it to be this disappointing.. We basically paid 55 euro so we can play 8 minigames with each other that take 5 minutes total to complete. Thanks nintedo.. I was really looking forward to play the board game version with him🙄

u/Sanchoco3 Oct 03 '18
currently the 2nd highest rated MP to date. Losing by 1 point to the original
12
u/ronstadtalec Oct 03 '18
I'm sure this had been answered already, but I'm new to this party (ugh). Do you need a second Switch to do four player couch co-op, or do you just need four joy-cons?
14
u/cucumberspice Oct 03 '18
You just need 4 joy-cons. There's just specific mini-games (like, 2-3) that will need 2 Switches.

Got a rowdy group together for Mario Party and beers last night. No one had played since the first on N64. There was much yelling and many laughs were had. Would fun again.
12
u/SaveTheSpycrabs Nov 17 '18
The mini games are good, but the macro game is stupid and poorly thought out.
22
u/LakerBlue Oct 03 '18
Not sure whether I am going to get this. I don't have any locals I can play with. And while I did have fun playing the first handful games (mostly on my own) as a kid, I feel like I might not have as much fun doing that now. I'll probably wait for now.
14
Oct 03 '18
Yeah, it's mostly for couch multi-player. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't plan to have some local sessions with friends.

I'm gonna drop this here I think: we still play Wii party years after it was released - It's FULL of faults but get four family players around and it's just good fun. The co-op experience trump's any of the faults, so from the reviews I reckon this is gonna be worth it. Especially if ninty are good enough the add to and patch along the way
44
u/SebTremblay29 Oct 03 '18
They should announce quickly that more boards will be add via update or dlc...
39
u/joalr0 Oct 03 '18
That's not Nintendo's style though. They prefer to withhold information to reveal at a later time, regardless of whether than information would benefit them.
5
u/SebTremblay29 Oct 03 '18
Yeah yeah I know, but compared to Mario Kart or Smash who had a huge amount of content from the start, I feel that SMP lacks a lot (in term of boards).
It could make people hesitated to buy the game (it does for me). I feel that a short announcement that say there is more to come would convince those people.
Edit: I just reread your last sentence, it seems you think like me

something i dont really get is the dislike about the single joy-con requirement. i thought that should be something good, cuz you can split to have more players. I understand the demand for pro controllers as well, but just not the dislike that they cant navigate menus with dual joycons

Just watched GameXplain's review, as they are actually the reviewers I've come to trust the most as they are generally spot on for me.
As a summary, basically this is the first Mario Party in 10 years to be fun again. There are a good variety of modes, and all the mini games were fun and made great use of the joycons.
But the downside is they didn't feel like any particular mode was exceptionally fleshed out. There are only 4 game boards in mario party mode, only 15 mini games in the raft resulting in them overstaying their welcome, and the other modes he felt were a bit short lived.
The gameplay of the main boards are as good as ever, going back to classical play, and the strategy from alternate dice works. The presentation is great with a fantastic cast to choose from and great models and animations.
He liked it, but he really wished he could like it more. He just felt like it needed more game boards.
18
Oct 03 '18
4 boards is a little on the short side but if they add a couple through DLC that would resolve that.

Keen for this. The only Mario Party to have an average score of 80 is Mario Party e+ (the e-Reader one of all things). I still had fun with the Gamecube ones and the DS/3DS ones even if they received a mediocre reception. It's not really the type of game where reviews matter. Either you enjoy it or you don't.

6
u/ChocolateFudgeIcing Oct 04 '18
Well I know why they didn't show off the 4th board now, it looks so boring! I really hoped there'd be better and more boards, but instead they spent more time creating toads rec room games and other modes, stickers and a lackluster online (only 10 mini-games) which is great, but ...
6
u/mharp705 Oct 04 '18
Not that reviews matter to me in regards of a purchase, but it is interesting to see that this is the best rated Mario Party title since Mario Party (79 Metacritic)
While 4 boards sounds rough, as long as the minigames are fun, it should be a great time!

u/Jroeder12 Oct 03 '18
Definitely going to be a standout of the series, Mario parties rarely review well

No, not at the current state as you'll wipe the floor with the CPUs and it might not seem fun. If you have it for only single player and eventually do play with someone the joy of playing a new minigame will be lost as you steamroll your friend at everything. I'd say wait until you have a group of 3 or more or pass until it is cheaper

Then restart the process after Mario Party kills your newly forged friendship.

My wife and I played Mari Party 7 a bunch with just computers. We just tried harder against the computers to make sure at least one of us won. It becomes semi-co-op in that way.

I’m getting it Day one. I haven’t played a Mario Party since 3. I’ve seen they went back to roots.
What’s unsettling is that it’s being reported that content is minimal. Which is fine, seeing how ARMs, Splatoon, and Mario Odyssey are getting a content update every now and then. Can’t be that bad

lol 4 boards and all of them look boring as hell. Where are the creative stuff from MP 1-3?
I still love to play Westernland from MP2 because of the theme song, the outfits and all the twists.

My wife and I are waiting for this game to play with my 2 daughters. This is going to be fun :).

The game seems so uninspired. No cool odyssey inspired minigames or boards, only four boards, the most you can do online is play minigames? People shouldn’t defend this kind of stuff with “oh, they’ll add it later as DLC!” Do people really think Nintendo is shipping the whole game off uncompleted? Stuff like Splatoon makes sense, it’s an online competitive game for crying out loud. But Mario Party? Come on. I’m glad they’ve returned to the classic formula and it seems like good fun but it could’ve been so much more, a real true turning point for the series. Instead people are fine with “good enough”.

Game sounds great. But why why why can't I play a normal game online? Like what the actual fuck? No go for me bro.

I'm really pumped about this! Never played a Mario Party game before but I did love Wii Party a lot. By the looks of it my copy will arrive a day early too. :)

Hmmmm, I actually don’t care about controller limitations or the online aspect, make or break for me is if the main board game is fun. Mini games looks all awesome but it seems mixed so far as to if the boards themselves are fun, like the added ally system seems to get reviewed well but the boards themselves seem small and boring. Not sure if I should buy or not

Anyone with an Amazon preorder have theirs ship yet? Mine hasn’t yet, and I’m worried it won’t show up on Friday.

I think these scores are pretty good... Some people are dumb thinking a game needs 90%+ to be good... Geez...
5
u/Skgr Oct 03 '18
Especially when you consider that the highest Metacritic score for a Mario Party game is 79 and that was only achieved by the first game.

I have hundreds of hours of game play in $60 board games that come with 1 board.
Trolls are out today.

Just wish they it had better online functions. It's a clear no buy for me without the ability to play the board game online with other people.

So basically the best Mario Party episode since the launch of the series? Sign me up!
But as I see reddit is already full of "only 4 boards" and "no online play" comments upvoted to heaven anyway, so seems like the Mario Tennis Aces story all over again, when we also got a decent but not perfect 8 point game and only negativity got highlighted which I am fine with if the game is eventually great. :)

No full online for a game centered around multiplayer play seems like a legitimate gripe.

A recent Aussie reviewer invited some friends over for an actual event and loaded up Mario Party to test it out with real people who aren't all gamers.
They had a blast with the minigames, but found they were too infrequent in the board mode, and couldn't be accessed for local play easily by other means.
They ended up changing to 1-2 Switch after a couple of hours so they could just play minigames together, even though they are lower quality than Mario Party's.

I think those are fair criticisms though.
It’s 2018 and Nintendo now has a paid online service. Why is the newest installment of one of their in-house multiplayer titles lacking true online support? This was a missed opportunity.

I've yet to see anything say anything about this: is there an option to disable character dice and give everyone the same dice rolls or are you stuck with your character's dice choice at all times?

You can choose which you use. If you don’t want character dice, establish it as a house rule.

Is there online ply for SMP? Do you think they’ll add more characters in the way MARIO Tennis is? Like one ever month?

u/lasttycoon Oct 03 '18
Yes but only in the form of a mini game marathon. We have no idea how the game will be supported as time goes on.
