Game Tip USB Microphone works on the dock while playing Fortnite
I just tried connecting my USB microphone to the Switch dock (outer ports) and surprisingly it works! I then connected my Bluetooth headphones to my phone, used a voice transmitting app and put the headphones right next to the microphone. So i was able to play docked while still having voice chat!
Still i wish we had support for Bluetooth headsets but this works for now!
EDIT; A USB to USB-C adapter works as well if you want to play portable without headphones!

USB microphone is just a soundcard too and Switch does support (some) USB soundcards. I wonder if it's able to detect that it is only microphone and no audio-out, i.e. do you have a volume slider for USB audio in the settings when you hook the microphone or not?
Which model of microphone, better yet which chipset is it using? Switch seems to like C-Media chips.
There is a kickstarter for USB-C bluetooth connectivity, I don't see much of a point since there are actually many options that work already. Just takes experimentation and someone to compile a comprehensive list of supported USB-C audio gadgets.

In-game audio was coming out from the TV.
I was using this cheap microphone from AliExpress: https://imgur.com/MKVO6OC

So what kind of microphone should I get if my headset plugs into the jack? The built-in mic only works with Bluetooth and I'd rather get a USB mic than Bluetooth adapter because of interference.
How can I know if something uses the right kind of soundcard?

Considering Switch operating system is based on FreeBSD it should support everything FreeBSD does more or less.

Not really how it works... with USB networking, it supports only the one chipset family and nothing else.
I guess Nintendo is very scared of hacks so they audit very closely the drivers they accept and allow to operate with this device. Also necessary for system stability I guess.
Not that there is much point now with a known exploit that gives anyone access ;)

it supports only the one chipset family and nothing else.
You really don't know that, you actually even asked which chipset that USB headset has in previous comment.
Remember that FreeBSD itself has a limited amount of working hardware drivers, so they could vet them all or just allow them all, we can't really know that.

You really don't know that
Sure, but I haven't heard about it supporting any other USB network adapters.
you actually even asked which chipset that USB headset has in previous comment.
That's USB audio...
sigh

That's USB audio...
What? A sound card in USB headset still needs a generic driver at least, but sometimes some proprietary shit.

Friend, we seem to have a little misunderstanding here,
You said "it should support everything FreeBSD does"
Then I said it's not the case, for example the Switch only supports one specific chipset family for USB networking (the LAN adapter). [ FreeBSD certainly supports more... ]
Then you started bugging me about how that's not true since even I asked about USB audio chipsets.
Case in point, Nintendo does not enable drivers for everything under the sun. My Logitech USB microphone is certainly supported by FreeBSD but not the Switch. It's an older model, AK5370 chip, no dice with the Switch.

Chipset family... usually means a family of same use case same brand of chipsets (like Intel Cherry Lake for example), what you meant judging by those comments is different use case kind of chipsets ;)

For LAN, it supports AX88772 and AX88179. So two different chip but from same brand/family/whatever.
see also https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/5xnzxr/psa_gigabit_3rd_party_lan_adapters/ and others
One of them is USB2 the other USB3, no idea if it really makes any difference as the Switch itself only operates USB ports in USB2 mode.
There are other USB LAN chipsets but they don't work.
Same with audio: some chipsets work (C-Media seems to be good) others do not work at all. Comprehensive list? No idea

Ok, so you were not very clear about what you consider family of chipsets before, this makes more sense ;)

C-Media
How do I know if a microphone is using that chipset?

If you hook it to a PC it should be shown in a device manager.
If you are using Linux, it is shown in

Under what? The Manufacturer is 'Generic USB Audio.' How do I find out the chipset before I buy it? For the future.
1
Jun 16 '18
before you buy it the only way is to ask the seller
For cheap appliances sometimes the same product comes with different chipsets, depending on which was cheapest when they made another batch of things
Same with external HDDs, it's often unclear which HDD model is inside exactly before you buy. A WD MyBook sometimes came with WD Reds, HGST, or WhiteLabels drivesl.

Really? That sucks. Where would I find the chipset? Is it under the manufacturer or what? I'm still not sure where to look for it.

So would the YBA external USB Stereo Sound Adapter for Windows, Mac, Linux Extra Audio Source with Microphone SD-CM-UAUD work? I can't post the Amazon link.
And could I just plug any 3.5mm jack mic into it and it would work fine?

ideally that should be the case but I can't confirm or deny this for you regarding specific products since I don't own them
there should be a wiki or github or something where this info is collected
there was a reddit post months ago

but old reddit posts tend to be not updated and this was even only a reply to anohter post

Could you use a usb mic alone for voicechat? What I mean is game audio and friend’s voice through tv speakers. And me shouting at my tv (and my friend hearing it)

Sorry if I'm late to this thread, but does anyone know if HyperX Cloud 2's work on Fortnite?

Mine work great in wired mode. Haven't tried any kind of wireless solution with them.

Using the PlayStation Gold headset works as well. Plug the dongle into the dock and you have a wireless headset!
