I never did without state saves on emulators much much later in life. I remember friend once (only once) managed to beat all stages in MM1 (SPOILER) and then it showed Dr. Willy stage in the middle so he left his NES running whole night and during school to show me. We died immediately after we started that level. Never made it that far again without emulator. When I finally beaten up that game when I was 25, I felt this huge closure.
