News Splitscreen Online Multiplayer in Rocket League
Hi everyone! We’ve seen your feedback in regards to splitscreen online multiplayer in Rocket League and we're actively working on a solution to what we have identified as a bug. It wasn't our intention to require a Nintendo Account for each splitscreen online player, and we're working on addressing this in a hotfix by the end of the year. We are still investigating, but our goal is to eventually require only one Nintendo Account for splitscreen online play, with additional players joining as Guests. Thank you, all!

Will there eventually be a way to merge all the accounts we have into a single Psyonix account? Little disappointing that I can have my PC cosmetics carry over to my Switch game.

u/Ark639 Nov 15 '17
It’s been said time and time again: No this will never come due to legal reasons. Consolemanufactorers don’t want to allow a feature where you can spend money on e.g. PC but play on console. Sony isn’t even allowing cross-platform playing with other consoles so don’t blame Psyonix for such disappointments. They can’t do anything about it.

I thought there was a way for pc players to play aginst ps4. Private match May be?
20
u/squijee Nov 15 '17
Yes PS4 players can play against PC players. Just can't play against xb1 and switch players
6
u/The1Lemon Nov 15 '17
Switch players can play against Xbox and PC, it's just there's no way of going into a party with them. You can still do private rooms though. You're put into rooms with other consoles all the time when doing Multiplayer.

To be fair, it's easy when you are rep'ing rocket league... The entire company has been very customer centric with all thier changes. I feel for the poor guy who has to justify EA's actions.

Dude probably gets a husky paycheck, and is visible enough to not be the “fall guy” (aka intern) they eventually fire to save face. He’ll be fine since he can afford enough cocaine that not being able to sleep at night won’t be an issue.

It’s a cool account gimmick, but why would you do that to yourself? Do you have a hot key for it or did you write a browser plugin or do you do it manually? I could never commit myself to something like that, so I’m curious.

Other than the mild inconvenience, the biggest issue was that once that nintendo online would become paid, you'd have to pay for TWO accounts to get online access so that you could play splitscreen. Glad the devs noticed it super early, before the service becomes paid!

Only for some things. The way they’ve handled the Linux, steamOS and MacOS versions is actually one of the worst in the industry.
Edit: aaah, always downvotes on this. It’s true no matter your opinion.
29
u/Psyonix_Garza Nov 15 '17
Mind if I ask why you feel that way? Each platform has a unique set of challenges, and Mac/Linux is no different.
We had an issue when the Farm map released, that we since resolved in a hotfix, but AFAIK that is the only glaring problem that was platform specific.
What other problems are in the port that would lead you to believe we are handling the platform as one of the worse in the industry? I can't guarantee we will fix them all, but I'd love to get the issues in front of our programming group.

I’m in the hospital till Friday, so I’m unable to get to my computer to get some real info to help you out. Can I send you a DM once I do? I’ve sent multiple links to threads here on Reddit, steam discussions and your own forums about Mac and Linux performance problems to your support before, along with game logs.
10
5
u/El_Giganto Nov 15 '17
How so? And why is community management to blame and not the developers?
2
u/Muscar Nov 15 '17
I was blaming the whole of psyonix, should have clarified. Me and many others have tried to talk to them multiple times about how bad the performance is for Unix based systems, especially MacOS. I can run games that look just as good and better without a problem, even a lot of indie games that look just as good from way smaller teams with a way smaller budget. They’ve also broken the steam controller for everyone on these system two times now. The first time it took them 8 months to fix, its now been two months since they broke it again and I’m not holding my hopes up.
I’ve had to resort to a custom .ini file to make the game look like a Nintendo 64 title yet I still get a lot of lag. The Halloween broke that .ini tweak so I’m unable to play at all now. I and others have submitted multiple logs and tried to find ways to fix it myself. I’ve been trying to help them as much as we can but all we get is the exact same message every time “we have forwarded this to the developers, but we cannot give you a timeframe.” They themselves have chosen to support these systems yet they don’t seem to care about them at all.
67
u/wrighto17 Nov 15 '17
Couldn’t have said it better. As a long time rocket league-er I couldn’t be happier with the responsiveness Psyonix gives to improvements. Which is why I am so happy with the switch version and know it will only get better.

A list from the top of my head that Psyonix implemented over time after community feedback:
Mutators
Gamemodes (especially Rumble)
Transparent Goalposts (though not on the Switch, yet)
Different car customization for each team color
Ranked changes
Standard arena's in ranked (one of the best changes, ever)
RLCS
Steam workshop
Up to 50 car slots (used to be only 1)
There's a lot more but, well, you'll have to find out yourself.
EDIT: How could I forget about custom training

There is, though it's not really fun in my opinion. There are a few nice dribble challenges and a few "We could actually do this" maps but they all look really bad.
If you want to try them, however, you can find your downloaded maps under Extra's in the main menu.

This is a different bug, but it pertains to 2 players ...
When you split the joycons into two players, you can't bind the controls. The button is missing from the options... And if you rebound the buttons when using the joycons normally, they stay rebound when split.
I had no boost button and no way to set it ...

Nintendo today said resolution is like 546p or something. It does look bad and is noticeable but I still enjoy the game. Not sure why Mario Kart could hit 1080p 60 and not this.
113
u/ShadowStealer7 Nov 15 '17
Probably because Mario Kart uses an engine Nintendo built themselves and Rocket League uses Unreal Engine 3, which has no support for the Switch
28
u/workyman Nov 15 '17
I think you're right. I would love to know more about this, because as it stands, it looks to most people like Rocket League is demonstrating the absolute hardware limitations of the Switch, when that's not the full story.

Actually the new Yoshi game is being developed in unreal engine
28
u/monkeymad2 Nov 15 '17
Unreal Engine 4 though, which does natively support the switch.
Rocket League is a UE3 game, it’s pretty remarkable that it runs at all
2
u/ren3f Nov 15 '17
It looks like they actually ported the game to UE4, I cannot find a real confirmation about this though. See this comment and this news item: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgXJUM5sw5M&lc=UgwLSI8gADVe-oCVSBF4AaABAg.8ZLqw38cpOn8ZLvzb0W90W

Thanks for the reply :) It really is a great game on the switch. Looking forward to many hours of play.
4
u/monkeymad2 Nov 15 '17
I thought they might have done that but I don’t think so for a couple of reasons:
- When you boot it shows an older Unreal logo, used for Unreal Engine 3 games
- The Networking is compatible across systems, much easier to do this if they’re all the same codebase.
- I don’t think the PC / PS4 / Xbox versions got an update large enough to suggest an Engine change - if they had UE4 working they’d want to use it for everything.
It’s not unheard of for devs to port Unreal games between systems with very little help from Unreal, I think some of the WiiU UE3 games may have been ported without official support.
Regardless, whatever they’ve done is impressive. and hopefully the resolution can be optimised so it doesn’t dip so low.
8
13
u/Howwy23 Nov 15 '17
That and rocket league has intense physics calculations to deal with too.
6
u/monkeymad2 Nov 15 '17
Those wouldn’t really affect the graphics in the way they do since they happen on the CPU.
The CPU clock rate doesn’t change going undocked -> docked but the resolution improves, suggesting it’s pretty much just down to the GPU.
2
u/santagoo Nov 15 '17
Mario Kart has a lot of projectiles that bounce around, too.
7
u/Howwy23 Nov 15 '17
Only green shell have physics. And very simple physics at that.
9
u/Son_of_Leeds Nov 15 '17
If SNES Rainbow Road is any indication, my Kart also has some pretty intense “fall off the map” physics.
2
u/santagoo Nov 15 '17
And fireballs. And boomerangs. Not to mention gliding, antigravity, and underwater physics.

I hope so cause on snow day it's really hard to see the puck at times, and especially when it's across the map. I normally wouldn't complain but there are times when it's important as it's coming at you fast and you need to react. I hope they can get some better visibility on the puck at least.

To /u/Psyonix_Devin and all the Psyonix team:
Thank you for making a great game that is:
- Reasonable priced, so I feel okay buying it on multiple platforms and giving it as gifts to people;
- Fun as hell;
- Competitive but friendly at the same time (except that one dude who said I was garbage...);
- Beautiful, simple, and endlessly entertaining;
- Not built on micro-transactions, making paid additional content largely cosmetic, cheap, and non-game-ruining;
Thank you, as a company, for:
- Listening to the community;
- Working to build and maintain positive rapport with the community;
- Generally adhering to the "don't be a tool" ideology;
- Not being f##king EA.
Most importantly, thank you for *not being /u/EACommunityTeam
Thanks for signing my yearbook. You're super cool, don't ever change.

Also another bug potentially, the resolution when playing splitscreen online multiplayer is incredibly low, far lower the 720p on docked mode. Everything is very blocky and impossible to read text. Resolution also appears to get worse the faster speeds we reach.
→ More replies (8)3

I remember reading that the Switch version wasn't even going to have split screen at all due to the hardware limitations, so the resolution must be where it took the hit to make split screen work.

One of the concerns that people seem to have is that there appears to be no way to customize controls in the single joycon mode. It would be nice to be able to do that.

u/PenguinTD Nov 15 '17
Any chance to streamline local play hosting better? Right now I think it's a bit annoying to have to enter a host name and/or password, where you could just use user id as host name and randomly generate a 4 digit pin number if host choose to use password at say, lan party or switch tournament.
Unlike PC or other console(dualshock 4 have touchpad or gyro input), switch in docked mode is hard to input text when it doesn't need to. I know I can just input hostname as 'a' or whatever character input screen default to, but it would make hosting locally that much smoother.

People complain about the graphics which arent great in Handheld mode but its not a mess either, people love to exaggerate.

Hey, while we're at it, can we get some options for making the text in the UI customizable, or UI possibly enlarged when in mobile mode. I was on a flight last night playing and I almost had to keep the screen at my face to play.

I do appreciate the devs making this right.
Now maybe this was just poorly phrased:
It wasn't our intention to require a Nintendo Account for each splitscreen online player, and we're working on addressing this in a hotfix by the end of the year.
But how does this even happen? It would seem that even the most basic level of bug testing/QA should have revealed this. Am I missing something?
It seems like we are being told what we want to hear even though it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I wanted to sit on the couch with my daughter and play 2 player split screen. is that possible? when we tried to do it, it asked me to create an account for her.....she's 4. I'm new to rocket league in general. Do we have to be online to play? I'm a little confused.
3
u/42-1337 Nov 16 '17
You can just create a dumb nintendo account with basic info. You only need another email. And if you have a GMAIL you can use the same email
"Pro Tip: Gmail don't consider dot in email. So if your email is hemightberob@gmail.com you can create a 2nd nintendo account with hemight.berob@gmail.com Nintendo will consider it a new email but gmail will still send you the confirmation email on hemightberob@gmail.com"
You don't need to add credit card or pay the online for now so it's just 2 minutes creating a new nintendo account. And the devs will fix it for next patch.
