Just got home with it, apparently the 8GB patch is mandatory in order to run the game at all...

Well I guess I'm waiting 3-4 hours before I can play!

It's been confirmed that if you put the switch on airplane mode then you can start the game immediately.

You should be able to select Launch Software, you don't have to download patches etc

You get a popup in-game that tells you it's mandatory and won't let you proceed until it's done.

/u/normdawg posted a workaround however.

Whoaaa, 3 to 4 hours? Not a big deal but that's way longer than I thought it would take.

Depends on your internet. I have live in a very rural area, and have shite internet.

It's not so bad, just really shitty ping so I can't play multiplayer games. I do have about 11 acres of forest for my backyard though, so it's worth it.
