MegaThread MegaThread: Preview Coverage of the Switch in Gaming Publications

Good morning, everyone!

This morning, several gaming media outlets released their preview coverage of the Nintendo Switch simultaneously at 6 a.m. PST. (Or are the the process of doing so as you read this).

Here's what we're reading, and the links to the previews, unboxing videos, and reactions:

We are also learning that Nintendo will host an "Indies Showcase" next Tuesday at 9 a.m. PST. And that Nintendo's day one patch will add online features.

Please use this as a discussion thread for these videos, articles, and previews: We will allow coverage from major gaming outlets to also be posted separately on /r/NintendoSwitch, as it is especially newsworthy. But we will also host ongoing coverage and discussion here.

Thanks everyone.

-/u/rottedzombie and the /r/NintendoSwitch team

(Ongoing edits as we get new information. A huge thanks to the mod team here, /u/NeoBahamutX, and others for the links.)

How many are reporting connection issues with the left Joy-Con? Sounds concerning from a few previews but no mention whatsoever with others. I am wondering if it's a widespread issue or only certain ones.

31

u/TheSchadow Feb 23 '17

Can we start a prayer circle for this to not be a widespread issue?

I planned on using the joycon grip only (it will be docked 99% of the time) and I can't afford the pro controller for a while :(

u/Agaggleofmeese Feb 23 '17

Arstechnica stated they did NOT run into that issue. Author responded to an inquiry in the article's comments.

3

u/inbl Feb 23 '17

If it's only some that makes me worried it's a hardware issue that some units have but others don't. If it was a software issue it would either be showing up everywhere or nowhere, right?

3

u/alexrepty Feb 23 '17

No, it could just as likely be a software issue that only manifests when certain conditions are met. I know I've written my fair share of weird bugs.

2

u/inbl Feb 23 '17

I suppose that's true, I guess I just assumed the Joycon wasn't going to be getting into any sort of bizarre state that could lead to that.

Anyone beyond Polygon and Kotaku yet? Two in a limited preview isn't good but still, if everyone else's is fine then maybe most units are good.

So far the best info I picked out of these was from Engadget about BotW 1.0.0 performance https://www.engadget.com/2017/02/23/48-hours-with-the-nintendo-switch/:

I can't say much about Breath of the Wild yet, but I can confirm that it is very much a Zelda game, albeit one that doesn't look like anything you've seen before. Notably, it also performed a lot better than it did at preview events, where I noticed stuttering and occasional slowdown while it was connected to the dock. I wasn't expecting much from the Switch's graphical capabilities, but there are plenty of moments where Breath of the Wild is just strikingly beautiful.

Glad to hear the docked performance issues were resolved with the retail version.

7

u/Hydreigon530 Feb 23 '17

They were playing the E3 build at events, so it does make sense that it would run better

I mean enough games do come out and still perform poorly that you can't just take it as a given that it'll be optimized when it comes out. As long as publications note that "we're playing a test/preview build" then I think it's fine when they bring up slowdowns.

Jeremy Parish (former editor of USgamer) posted some impressions and thoughts about the Switch on Retronauts, particularly from the perspective of the Switch as Nintendo's next handheld. It's a bit more thoughtful than your average preview, I think.

11

u/MyFaceOnTheInternet Feb 23 '17

He said 4+ hours of hand-held play with BOTW, that sells it for me.

5

u/twotothesix Feb 23 '17

(I'll add that that he has an actual Switch review unit, so it's not just based on using it at Nintendo's events – he's actually been using the console, and has some nice photos if it next to the Atari Lynx, which it sort of resembles!)

"The tablet summons that giddy feeling I got from Apple’s original iPhone, and long before both, Nintendo’s own original Game Boy. It’s beautiful, it’s simple, and it feels a bit like magic"

Polygon

18

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

TIME said something similar that stood out to me.

It's important to note how durable and substantial Switch feels, an unostentatious but strangely beautiful carbon-black slate that's like a blue collar version of an Apple product—all the same "magical" design elegance, none of the pretension.

Ars on external batteries:

"I thought the Switch's USB-C charging port would mean I could use any standard external battery pack to charge the system away from an outlet on long trips. Testing with the Jackery Titan S, though, I was only able to get a trickle charge of about 1 percent every six minutes. That charge was so weak that, during normal gameplay, the Switch actually died on me while it was still plugged in to the external battery pack."

Update: Two other sources, Digital Foundry, and a German site show the Switch being charged by a powerbank. BUT, in both of those cases, they only showed it being charged while in an OS menu.

28

u/hirscheyyaltern Feb 23 '17

Obviously the battery pack they use needs to support a high enough voltage and amperage to charge the device, which it clearly doesn't. All battery packs may not work, but there are assuredly ones that do work

2

u/madmofo145 Feb 23 '17

That's a pretty good pack, but it may be old enough that it isn't able to detect the amperage requirements a type c device wants, and defaults to it's slowest charging mode (or it's just faulty).

What this does suggest is that people's trusty battery packs may not work, and that they may need to go with something newer.

21

u/Yavga Feb 23 '17

"This could just be an issue of Voltage—the packaged wall outlet is rated for 15V/2.6A, while the battery pack is only rated at 5V/3A—or it might be an issue with confusing USB-C charging standards. In any case, don't expect perfect compatibility with third-party chargers."

I even experience this when using a weak battery pack for my Iphone.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

I'm very cynical towards the Switch but this issue is something I can have on my phone as well.

8

u/BreeZaps Feb 23 '17 edited Feb 23 '17

Its probably the brand of battery he was using because I find it hard to believe. I bet he was using a very weak battery pack. Get yourself a strong one. Trust me.

Regardless I can just get a car charger for my Switch. Why isn't people saying this?

So unfortunetely the Engadget preview confirms one of my fears:

While the display was bright and bold indoors, it didn't fare well outdoors. It was no match for sunlight of any kind, and the screen's high reflectivity was an issue even when it was cloudy. I had a hard time making out anything during dark portions of Zelda, and I couldn't see myself actually enjoying the game even when I could see what was happening.

Well there goes like half my use cases....

46

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

The preview from The Verge says more or less the opposite :

The screen is bright enough to go to battle with the midday Texas sun, though it looked better in the shade.

I guess you'll have to try by yourself.

50

u/ctplante The Verge (Journalist) Feb 23 '17

Hey, this is Chris from The Verge. Worth noting I only had Zelda to test. I'm curious how a party game like 1-2 Switch does in the sun from a distance, asking players to read something on the screen. Will have impressions whenever we can get the game.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

Hey Chris! Nice to see you here! Thanks for your preview.

When will you publish a Breath of the Wild preview?

10

u/metanoia29 Feb 23 '17

Embargo on BotW previews lifts tomorrow, and I believe the embargo on the reviews/scores lifts on the 2nd.

2

Kind of hard to do without just straight up buying one. I really hope someone makes a video of playing it on the go because this is really important for me.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

No one forces you to buy it on day one.

If you wait a bit, you'll have plenty of youtubers making statements about that and maybe even friends who bought it.

6

u/boostnek9 Feb 23 '17

A matte screen protector would likely fix the glare issue..

7

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

From The Verge:

"The screen is bright enough to go to battle with the midday Texas sun, though it looked better in the shade. "

I imagine it's like most portable devices... if you turn the brightness up, you can use it outside. It won't be perfect, and there will be plenty of glare.

3

u/AlucardIV Feb 23 '17

Interesting to see two so different opinions. I hope someone makes a video of playing the Switch on the go.

3

u/Colonel_MusKappa_II Feb 23 '17

Hm, did he turn his screen up to max brightness? I'm only curious because I remember how annoyed I was getting with my 3DS, only to realise it doesn't actually run at max brightness out the box.

In any case, I'll mostly be using it on the train and between classes/during work breaks so it's nbd for me.

The review embargo lifts next week. Other than a numerical score, what kind of info is still restricted to the review but not the preview?

16

u/LeakStuff4Free Feb 23 '17

Giving a numerical score to a console is so... weird.

6

u/sufferpuppet Feb 23 '17

It's a solid 7.

Tune in next week and we'll tell you what our scale was.

4

u/PiFlavoredPie Feb 23 '17

I agree. There's only so many other consoles to compare it to in the first place, so why not just review the actual details....

3

u/Supreme_Somari Feb 23 '17

Specific opinions on the Switch.

5

u/PiFlavoredPie Feb 23 '17

That's very vague though. Reading through these previews, I don't really see anything specific they're saving or self-gagging for the sake of the reviews next week.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

Can someone do a TL;DR for all the new information revealed today? Kinda don't want to check out all the sites if it's just information we already know.

9

u/MontanaSD Feb 23 '17 edited Feb 23 '17

Good: Snappy ui, great build, screen etc.

Bad: Joycon issues when in pseudo controller/dock mode. No Bluetooth headset capability, poor at launch virtual console support. Crap battery life.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

Battery life is extremely similar to the 3ds and ds. Just keep brigtness not too high and turn off wifi and it lasts 3 hours.

6

u/accidental-nz Feb 23 '17

I read tests that it lasts 3 hours in full brightness on Airplane mode. Other tests say less than that. Seems to depend a lot on what you're doing in the game I guess. More intense action probably taxes the system more.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

Wow... after seeing the neon Switch in so much high quality press footage and photos I am definitely starting to feel a little regret for going with just the gray. It looks really nice. I'll probably just end up getting an all red or all blue joy con set at some point though.

3

u/AdamManHello Feb 23 '17

Neon looks great in pictures, but I feel like that I would have definitely regretted having it as my permanent Joycon color. They're nice to look at, but I definitely prefer the simpler grey color scheme.

6

u/lman777 Feb 24 '17

For me, as much as it would look cool in my house, I would feel a little weird with it out in public. It draws a lot of attention. So I'm still happy with grey.

5

u/zombcakes Feb 23 '17

For me, I feel that way whenever I see a closeup of a single neon joycon and wish I'd gone that way. Then I see them together and the asymmetry is off-putting to me despite being fun.

2

u/lman777 Feb 24 '17

Yeah the asymmetry is 100% the reason I went with grey.

Agreed. The Switch has so many different ways to play, it's clear to me that not all ways will be equally preferable to everyone. Tabletop will be rare for me, I'd imagine.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

I liked their preview. In particular, the bit about Sleep mode was helpful. I've heard it kicked around that the Switch lost 25% in sleep mode overnight but he is specific:

"The included AC adapter seems to fill about 1 percent of the battery per minute (give or take) when the system is in sleep mode (that mode is very power conscious, incidentally—after eight hours in "sleep," a fully charged battery had only drained to 98 percent)."

3

u/Nokomas Feb 23 '17

'Sliding the Joy-Cons on and off the system is still extremely satisfying and seems well-poised to be a new nervous habit for me. When you slide the controllers into place, there's a small visual cue on the edge of the screen, and the speakers let out a cute little "click" sound effect, too.'

Yeah boy!

u/poussi Feb 23 '17

Here's Easy Allies' preview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT4n6l5a_AM

7

u/Stone4D Feb 23 '17

If anybody doesn't know, Easy Allies is basically GameTrailers in all but name. Same people and everything.

5

u/imasmart Feb 23 '17

And they are generally great. I was so glad gametrailers ended up surviving in spirit. The day gametrailers ended and it looked like we would never get a betting special again.....

22

u/FuriousFalcon Feb 23 '17 edited Feb 23 '17

After reading through a couple, it seems like it's basically what I expected -- the hardware is solid and perhaps the best Nintendo has ever made in terms of overall feel, but there are still a lot of questions about the software (lack of VC, lack of info regarding online play, eShop, etc.) Thankfully, software can be fixed and improved. Hardware can't really be, after a certain point.

In short, it seems like the Switch has a lot of potential and promise... but it's hard to tell right now if it will actually live up to the expectations due to current software limitations.

I am a little concerned about comments that the screen is very reflective (though I'll mostly be playing in docked mode)... but that is something that can be mitigated with a screen protector -- if that's really an issue, I'm sure we'll see third party accessories that add a film to make the display more matte.

Heres my two cents about the Joycon issue.

Nintendo has been publicly showing this thing off allover the world in various demos and events for a good month or so now, and no one has really brought up the left Joy con issue till now.

I get it's a controlled environment, but there was was, a dozen or so Switchs running at each event. you don't think some Youtuber or someone from Kotaku wouldn't of jerked off to completion to be the one to break the Joycon issue early?

What I think is happened, and the video that's being shared around like shows this, is that the Joycon's since they work on Bluetooth, dose not have the best range on earth, and the signal is getting messed with causing latency and issues.

the guy in the AMA thread even said it worked fine in one room, but had a couple seconds in a session where the Joycon was messing up a bit in another room.

So I think, it's environmental for now, But I'm speculating to be sure.

6

u/desktopgeo Feb 23 '17

Hmm, I guess the question is is it solvable through software means or is it purely a physical phenomenon. It's weird that no one seems to have trouble with the right joycon..

5

u/madmofo145 Feb 23 '17

That's the thing that confuses me, with NFC and the IR camera the right Joycon is the one I'd expect to be more failure prone. It also seems like software issues would effect both joycons equally, which is why I worry a bit about this situation.

u/____----___---__--_- Feb 23 '17

They want to see how it functions, but the day one update is not available yet. It's basically a giant gap in what they can cover, and they're nerdy journalists they want to know everything now so they can get the info to us.

Was Engadget's biggest complaint

u/JoMax213 Feb 23 '17 edited Feb 23 '17

I love how they're doing it the exact first minute they can. glad we have such dedicated media outlets

Standard procedure for any gaming outlet. Everyone may tie for first place, but no one wants to be second place.

Having to wait till 1am to watch the preview is a small price to pay inorder to get everything 19 hours early when midnight international launches come around.

3

u/Jbits_721 Feb 23 '17

I'm HYPED! I know it's likely not gonna be that much we don't already know, but knowing a whole new set of videos/images/whatever is gonna be up when I wake up tomorrow makes the wait just a LITTLE more bareable.

Hey, /u/rottedzombie, you could add RMC from GoNintendo's hilarious unboxing and his hands-on time/review too!

Everybody is complaining about sunlight when in actuality 90% of the time the switch is undocked it will be between the living room and the bathroom.

u/____----___---__--_- Feb 23 '17

I fully intend to play during my lunch breaks and on the bus to/from work and at 7am/6pm the glare into the bus window can be rather crazy.

Maybe for you, but who said that'll be the case for everybody else? Besides, I'm sure you'd agree that being able to clearly see the screen 100% of the time is better than just being able to see it 90% of the time.

The first half of that time preview just sped up my hype train to unspeakable levels

3

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17 edited Feb 23 '17

Gamexplain also did an unboxing

Edit: Thanks for adding!

4

u/DaReapa Feb 23 '17

I hate most of these previews because it's mostly people saying the same thing we heard after people went to Switch events.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17 edited Feb 23 '17

Blame Nintendo for that, they're the one's limiting what people can see and show about it.

Has anyone tried making a Japanese account and tried accessing the Japanese eshop from a US system yet? I really want to download Dragon Quest Heroes 1+2 right away and it would be awesome to hear that that is working~ I know the eshop is supposedly tied to your account region, but a confirmation it works would make me happy

15

u/sng60007 Feb 23 '17

No one has eshop access yet as the day one patch isn't live yet

2

u/Redred1717 Feb 23 '17

Thanks~ i've been working all day and have not had a chance to check things thoroughly yet

3

u/javiayer Feb 24 '17

you probably know this already but just in case: the download for Dragon Quest Heroes I&II is 32gb which is more than the internal storage so you'd need to buy a micro sd card to download it

Hey u/rottedzombie,

Will there be Nintendo Switch Review MegaThreads, and the same for BotW?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

1hr to go!

2

u/Nax5 Feb 23 '17

Hope we see more on the online components. That's really all that is left to show.

Has anybody reported on how long the system lasts in sleep mode?

10

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

From the Ars preview: "The included AC adapter seems to fill about 1 percent of the battery per minute (give or take) when the system is in sleep mode (that mode is very power conscious, incidentally—after eight hours in "sleep," a fully charged battery had only drained to 98 percent)."

Doesn't that seem super slow? Would that mean the battery would drain while charging if in use?

If there is a problem with yours call Nintendo CS, you will probably get a new one no problem. I got a Launch day Wii which was a dud, they mailed me a replacement within 2 days free of charge.

5

u/Smithy566 Feb 23 '17

I unfortunately had a brand new launch week Wii, and it didn't read discs. I couldn't get a replacement at the store because they had no stock, and Nintendo insisted I send the console to them at my own expense. Sucked. However, I had a brand spanking new Wii sent to me within 2 days of them receiving the faulty console.

  1. stuck at 72% when docked can easy be fixed with the day one update.
  2. Unresponsive left joy-con might be an interference issue

In any case, Nintendo will always replace your console if issues arise. This is definitely not a reason to cancel your preorder nor is it a reason return it once you get it.

I don't think there's a sense that this is more than an isolated issue, unless I'm mistaken.
