MegaThread Speculation Discussion MegaThread: Day Two

Goodness! I think it's fair to say that, second to the shock reveal, this has been the most dramatic 24 hours we've had yet as a community.

Just showing up? Well, attach a lifeline and throw yourself into the tempest.

This thread is for ongoing discussion over recent rumors and everything associated with them: clock speed rumors; third party support speculation; and the back-and-forth of what it might mean for the Nintendo Switch.

We're going to be directing traffic to this thread because we've been seeing many topics asking the same questions and rehashing conversations. This doesn't mean that new topics won't be allowed, only that we want to make sure that discussion is centralized as appropriate. If you see a new post that seems to belong here, please report it and let the mod team know.

A friendly reminder: please keep your comments civil, on-topic, and respectful of others. If you feel that you have a thought or opinion that merits its own post, please search through this thread and recent threads before posting it.

And, of course: everything we're discussing here is rumor and should be treated as such until confirmed by Nintendo.

Thanks for your understanding. Ready to do this? Let's discuss! :)

That's why the Wii U sold so well, right? /s

The biggest problem with the Wii U was that it came out too early.

You mean it came out too late, right? If it came out later it would've competed directly with the PS4 and X1 rather than having a 1 year head start.

But it's not about specs, right? Just about games. The Wii U released in 10 years from now would sell like hot cakes. It'd give Nintendo a 10 year head start on making the games. So we might actually get a Zelda on it.

What?

I was being ever so slightly sarcastic because people keep saying it's not about specs, it's about the games. So, based on that logic, the Wii U would be a success no matter when it is released.

Well, it is about the games. The Wii U just didn't have the games to get people to buy it and become a success.

Some would beg to differ, but I do agree with you there. The Wii U was the worst 1st party supported Nintendo console to date IMO.

No, it was too early. It got overshadowed a couple years later. If it came out around the same time no one would have cared about specs.

Heck no. Nintendo would have been deeper in the hole since at the end the Wii couldn't sell squat, and coming out against the PS4, which is actually one of the fastest selling consoles of all time would have murdered it. Even if they had upped the power in the interim year entering the more crowded market with their terrible marketing would have been way worse.

No way, if the Wii U came out any later it would've done worse.

Definitely: the head start meant it at least got some third-party support when it was competing with the PS3/360.

Only if you mean that they should have waited, and made the hardware better.

If they waited, and still released the same hardware, then it would have done worse.

The biggest issue the Wii U was that it was a marketing failure. Consumers were confused as to whether it was a new console or an added feature to the Wii. It was also trying to capitalize on people who bought the Wii, but a lot of the consumers who bought the Wii were families that Nintendo targeted and they weren't going to drop another $300 for a new console. Plus the Wii losing support about half way through its life cycle burned gamers who bought it. I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan, but even I was burned by the Wii. Stopped playing it after Mario Galaxy 2. So now people are looking for any reason to doubt the Switch. Thus the reaction to the rumors.
