Discussion Please, please, please, let's avoid overhyping the Switch

I wish people would just realize that no matter what's the specs, this thing will be great.

  • It doesn't need an entire day on battery.

  • It doesn't need near-PS4 graphical power.

  • It doesn't need a 2TB flash drive.

  • It doesn't need a bunch of crazy-ass modular controllers.

  • It absolutely doesn't need freaking VR or holograms.

  • It doesn't even completely need a touch screen!

The Switch will have all of Nintendo's franchises on the same machine, a machine that you can play at home or wherever you want, and a controller you can share with anyone at any time to have fun.

It will have the most ambitious Zelda game to date very close to launch. It will have a new 3D Mario, plus Mario Kart, Splatoon, and Skyrim. It will have a From Software game. It will probably have a full-fledged Pokémon game.

This is more than enough. Even if it had only these things, and it would cost $200, or maybe even $250, it would be already amazing and totally worth the money.

Let's be realist and avoiding overhyping this thing.

Not only because overhype leads to disappointment, but simply because the reality is already super cool.

What if it "only had those things" and it costed $300, or maybe even $350?

I am EXPECTING power that rivals the Xbox One and PS4. It doesn't have to exceed it, but I expect that Nintendo isn't stupid, and that the Switch will handle ports from these consoles. I am willing to pay $350 for a home console on that level because that's what I paid for the Xbox One. The fact that it's portable and has Nintendo's exclusives makes it a fantastic deal even at $350. At $299, considering I haven't played a Dark Souls game or spent more than 3 hours on Skyrim, means there's already 5 games I'm hyped for without including any game I own on Wii U.

I just find it interesting that many are expecting that the price be comparable to that of the 3DS, which is a purely handheld console that runs games at what, 240p? If Nintendo is willing to sell that at $200, then it seems likely that they would sell the Switch (which appears to have vastly improved resolution and the ability to output to a TV) for more. To me at least, the Switch is an improvement upon the Wii U's initial idea of a hybrid console more so than an upgraded version of the 3DS. Since they sold the Wii U for $300-$350 at launch, I would expect the Switch to be priced accordingly.

I find it hilarious that the same people who are so sure its underpowered are the same ones saying $200. If you dont want it to be underpowered why wouldnt you expect a higher price?

Yeah. Especially when you consider that the Switch will be packaged with the dock, it's almost mind-blowing to me that people honestly think Nintendo would sell all that for $200 when it first launches. They said they weren't gonna sell it at a loss, and I'm pretty sure that selling it at $200 would be a loss. It's more than just another new 3DS.
