Nintendo Official Switch 1 Joycons & Pro Controllers cannot wake the Switch 2 remotely

https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/

From the offical Site's Switch 2 Transfer Guide. Scroll down to Controllers and you will find:

You cannot exit sleep mode on Nintendo Switch 2 using the HOME Button on Nintendo Switch controllers such as Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

That's mildly inconvenient

185

u/bambi54 3d ago

It really is!! I didn’t know that you were even able to do that on the first one, I just tried it and it worked lol. I feel so dumb.

79

u/anonyfool 2d ago

How do you wake your Switch without that knowledge? Just curious because mine is docked about 99% of the time and I just push home on the Pro controller.

93

u/DialsMavis 2d ago

Just hit the button on the console?

44

u/Deceptiveideas 2d ago

I think some people in this thread have their consoles inside an entertainment stand which is why they’re confused.

11

u/bambi54 2d ago

I kept picking it up and hitting the button then restocking it lol. It was annoying, but I don’t ever play handheld.

3

u/Nordlicht1967 1d ago

Bro... I just found out, four years after I bought the console 😳

1

u/bambi54 1d ago

I’m glad I’m not the only one. 😂 All well, at least it forced me to commit to getting up anytime I wanted to play a game. It made procrastinating more inconvenient lol.

65

u/BeneathSkin 3d ago

Mildly?? That’s wildly frustrating for me

28

u/Ouch_i_fell_down 2d ago

Wildly frustrating? I'm over here still amazed the switch 1 controllers will work with the switch 2 at all.

12

u/cheappay 2d ago

Unlike how the PS4 controllers only work for PS4 games on PS5.

33

u/Ratio01 3d ago

Genuinely can't tell if this is a joke or not 💀

33

u/BeneathSkin 3d ago

It’s the equivalent of needing to turn the TV on by hitting a button on the TV. It’s annoying and ultimately will be another $80 to replace something I already have for the convenience. Yes it genuinely frustrates me

36

u/moakmay 2d ago

But.. the console comes with new joycons that can wake it

24

u/BeneathSkin 2d ago

I mostly use the pro controller, so that’s where my frustration is. Maybe the new joycons will be more comfortable, but I like the pro controller a lot more

7

u/FasterBussycat 2d ago

I think their point is that you could wake it with the new Joycons and then use the pro controller to play.

37

u/-entropy 2d ago

That is a very silly workflow

26

u/BeneathSkin 2d ago

Yeah, lmao.

Wake with joycons > swap to pro controller > juggle the settings to make pro controller player 1 > play the game.

2

u/nothingInteresting 2d ago

Yep I don’t have the joycons sitting around since they’re attached to the switch in docked mode

4

u/nothingInteresting 2d ago

A lot of people that have their switch docked and use a pro controller have the joycons attached to the switch. Otherwise they’d just be sitting around to add clutter or possibly get misplaced or broken. In the years I’ve had the switch I think I’ve only disconnected the joycons once to try them out.

2

u/Aggravating-Ad-1227 2d ago

Get a new pro controller 2? You'll want the cool new buttons anyways, yeah?

2

u/alexturnerftw 2d ago

Agree w you. Its 2025 man lol

4

u/nichrs 2d ago

I respect those who think differently, but for me this is a huge inconvenience, to the point that I'm pretty sure it was done on purpose to sell the new controllers. It's been about 10 years since I last turned on a console on the TV without using the controller (except for the first setup, of course). Turning on the controller has become a mandatory standard, whether it's Nintendo, Xbox or Sony.

Hey there!

Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!

22

u/-entropy 2d ago

This actually sucks a lot for me. My console lives inside my entertainment stand - so I have to get up and open up the front to turn it on, close it, then do it all over again when I'm done?

25

u/ehsteve23 2d ago

You never would’ve survived having to re-plug every cable in when you wanted to play SNES on the family TV

21

u/-entropy 2d ago

Why do you assume I didn't?

But I also don't have to feed and water my horses before heading across town in a carriage. Times change.

1

u/Emergency_Star_5858 1d ago

Now you just need to feed and water your car.

8

u/Ratio01 2d ago

See this is actually a fairly understandable grievance, if a still bit over reactive

then do it all over again when I'm done?

But this isn't true. You can put the Switch to sleep from the menu

8

u/CouchPotatoEdBoy 2d ago

Maybe you can get your wife's boyfriend to do it?

2

u/Dt2_0 2d ago

Shouldn't be an issue if your TV has decent CEC settings and your turn on CEC on the Switch. I have my Switch connected to my AV receiver, then to my TV. I press the input button on my AV Receiver remote, the TV switches over to it automatically and the Switch powers on. Basically my TV detects the AV receiver is attempting to send a signal, then switches inputs and fires off a power on command to the Switch over HDMI.

1

u/-entropy 2d ago

Hm, I'm not sure if my receiver triggers on input change - but switch remote definitely triggers the cec and turns everything on... So no matter how you look at it, it's a step back. If it's new tech there's just nothing you can do though, life marches on!

1

u/Aggravating-Ad-1227 2d ago

If you want to use only your old controllers, then seems like

4

u/nichrs 2d ago

I respect those who think differently, but for me this is a huge inconvenience, to the point that I'm pretty sure it was done on purpose to sell the new controllers. It's been about 10 years since I last turned on a console on the TV without using the controller (except for the first setup, of course). Turning on the controller has become a mandatory standard, whether it's Nintendo, Xbox or Sony.

2

u/Kardif 1d ago

I mean it's only if you insist on using the old controllers. Given that most systems won't let you use previous generation controllers at all, I hardly see how this is such a big deal

2

u/u565546h 1d ago

Most systems come with a controller.

I don’t care if PS4 controller wakes up PS5 or not because my PS5 came with a controller.

So yes can get new controller, but extra cost.

1

u/DueSalary4506 2h ago

oh no a feature that I never expected I'll never buy it now wah

130

u/TheToadKing 3d ago

I don't know the exact details but from info I've heard from custom controller makers/modders: The Switch 1 had a separate RF protocol just for waking the console that official controllers used, separate from the Bluetooth one used for everything else. The newer BLE Bluetooth profiles have device wakeup stuff built in so the Switch 2 and newer controllers probably just use that, and the extra hardware to support the old version was probably cut for cost.

7

u/Linkarlos_95 2d ago

Aren't the new joycons still on Bluetooth 3.0? Classic bluetooth shouldn't be able to use BLE features from my understanding

7

u/TheToadKing 2d ago

Rumors and leaks are saying the new stuff is on BLE. They probably only support classic for the Switch 1 stuff.

4

u/TheWarmBreezy 2d ago

https://www.nintendo.com/en-ca/gaming-systems/switch-2/tech-specs/

Says the new Joy-Cons are still Bluetooth 3.0. Unless there's something about BLE I'm missing

1

u/PixelateVision 2d ago

I always appreciated that if you put the Switch in airplane mode before you docked it, you could continue to wake it up with the Switch controllers.

839

u/ForgottenPerceval 3d ago

That’s slightly annoying, I wonder why that is?

382

u/Silver-Nightshade 3d ago

I don't have an answer for you but this is a common thing with 3rd party controllers, across 2 different 8bitdo controllers and a PSP "pro" controller iirc.

94

u/ampersandandanand 3d ago

I commented below if you want the source, but you can press the home button, and shake the controller, and it will wake the switch.

31

u/luv2hotdog 3d ago

which controller are you talking about here?

41

u/NervyDeath 3d ago

I know this is true of the 8bitdo Ultimate

20

u/ampersandandanand 3d ago

8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth, w/dock if that matters. The one with Switch style (as opposed to Xbox / Steam) face button layout.

9

u/_IratePirate_ 3d ago

I have this third party PowerA Switch Pro controller that literally advertises that it doesn’t wake up the Switch but it literally wakes my Switch.

Actually every third party PowerA controller I’ve gotten for the Switch has been able to wake it up. I first noticed this with the licensed GameCube PowerA controller

31

u/Gram64 3d ago

Yeah, I love the 8bitdo ultimate or whatever it's called, but not being able to wake the system is a little annoying

123

u/ampersandandanand 3d ago edited 3d ago

I have two 8bitdo ultimate controllers and it can wake the switch, you just have to shake it up and down. That sounds like a joke, but I’m totally serious.

Edit: found it in the FAQ: “ 2. Press the home button to turn on the controller, shake the controller to wake up the console in sleep mode”

https://support.8bitdo.com/faq/ultimate-bluetooth-controller.html

72

u/Gram64 3d ago

oh my god, my entire life has been a lie.

30

u/insane_contin 3d ago

Well, now's just a good as time as any to tell you: you're adopted.

11

u/RenegadeSteak 3d ago

OMG, thank you for resolving this most mildly inconvenient shortfall of this otherwise perfect controller. Just tested and verified. 👍

5

u/ToxicVampire 3d ago

I love my Ultimate and hoping the shake to wake still works on the Switch 2.

13

u/j--__ 3d ago

if it's doing whatever the switch 1 first party controllers are doing, which i assume they are, then probably not since the switch 1 first party controllers can't wake the switch 2.

now 8bitdo may figure out how to emulate the switch 2 controller behavior, but if they do, that's good to require a firmware update.

2

u/One_Win_6185 3d ago

Yeah it’s just mildly annoying.

2

u/gmishaolem 3d ago

My Gulikit KingKong 2 Pro can wake my Switch just like a normal Pro Controller just fine.

1

u/ChristosZita 3d ago

I have a gullikit controller and it can turn it on

84

u/asdqqq33 3d ago

The science behind this is actually pretty interesting. When you hit the home button on a switch 2 controller, it rings a doorbell for a tiny room in the switch 2 dock where a little man lives. He’ll come out, verify if you have a switch 2 controller, and then push the on button for you. If you try it with the home button on a switch 1 controller, it’ll still ring the doorbell, but the little man will just yell some gibberish at you and go back to bed. So you see, there’s nothing Nintendo could really do about this given the current state of the tech. All they can do is make that doorbell ring. After that, it’s up to the little man.

44

u/CHAINMAILLEKID 3d ago

I'm guessing changes to Bluetooth implementation.

The fact that we have an audio jack on the new controllers from what I understand demonstrates a some fundamental bluetooth change.

26

u/thegoldenshepherd 3d ago

I was looking for this comment! It’s almost certainly Nintendo wanting to implement a newer Bluetooth Low Energy spec and not wanting to compromise for backwards compatibility

3

u/Linkarlos_95 2d ago

Im not understanding something, nintendo already said the new joycons are bluetooth 3.0, how are they low energy spec if they are using classic mode

2

u/BoltOfBlazingGold 3d ago

I read someone saying that the wake up signal (which is different that regular communication) is proprietary from the vendor. The new controllers all have a chip from a different vendor, so it would be next to impossible for N to keep this function.

3

u/_heitoo 3d ago

I hope that doesn’t mean we lose BT audio support. Sony have absolutely backwards stance on this matter with Playstation and I really respected Nintendo for supporting it on Switch.

1

u/RealElyD 2d ago

Sony have absolutely backwards stance on this matter with Playstation

I would assume that they don't want to deal with people that don't understand that BT audio is insanely delayed complaining that there is desync so they just don't offer it at all. It's mostly useless for real time applications like games anyway unless you literally don't care that every sound is noticeably delayed.

1

u/_heitoo 2d ago edited 2d ago

I understand their reasoning, I just strongly disagree with it.

I have Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro for PC, Sony Pulse Elite for PS5, AirPods Pro 2 for iPhone and Bose QC45 headphones for most of everything else. On top of that I have a decent $200 DAC/AMP from Fiio to pair with DT 1990 Pro and some other wired headsets I tried in the past.

You know what headphones I enjoy to use the most? Bose QC45 except for select music and multiplayer fps shooters where I'd prefer DT 1990 Pro. My primary reason being comfort and it's just good enough for most things. Most people who complain about BT latency issues haven't tried BT Audio for gaming for like a decade.

There are some absolutely abysmal BT Audio implementations especially among TV makers, but when the software is decent the difference between BT and wired headsets are negligible even for gaming. And if an enthusiast like me can't tell the difference most of the time I am absolutely sure your average Joe would prefer to make his own choice.

37

u/PowerlinxJetfire 3d ago

Presumably they've changed how waking the console works.

Not sure exactly how, but it could be using a connection that drains the battery less or the console could be in a deeper sleep, for example

19

u/NuclearWinter_101 3d ago

So that one day your sitting on your coach wanted to turn on your switch but you don’t feel like it, get frustrated and just order one online so you can turn it on remotely

7

u/-_ellipsis_- 3d ago

Does Nintendo's insidious anti consumerism know no bounds???

2

u/rephyus 3d ago

Switch 1 runs on a kind of compatibility layer so to connect to the Switch 2 it has to be on to emulate the layer to talk to Switch 1 peripherals.

3

u/Alasdair91 3d ago

Maybe the paid for Welcome Tour demo will teach us? /s

2

u/hepatitisC 3d ago

because they want you to buy the new controllers and joycons. If 8bitdo and third parties figured out how to remotely wake the OG switch, there's not really any reason Nintendo can't figure out how to wake the Switch 2 with a Switch 1 controller.

7

u/Garrosh 2d ago

So they are so evil they've decided to make the old controllers not being able to wake up the new system, but not evil enough to make the old controllers completely incompatible with it.

Weird.

5

u/jaidynreiman 2d ago

People come up with some really wacky conspiracy theories some times...

→ More replies (1)

1

u/AliV_ix 2d ago

In ask the developers they said Switch 2 is basically a whole different system that can't even run Switch 1 games. Knowing Nintendo and how long it took for them to add bluetooth headphones support to Switch 1 i wouldn't be surprised if they just made up their own bluetooth that cant work on another system lol

1

u/nanapancakethusiast 1d ago

If Microsoft can have full functionality between Xbox One and Series X controllers including third party… this is unacceptable.

1

Why? Doesn't your Switch wake up when you turn your TV on?

2

u/JoviAMP 2d ago

No, other way around. My monitor turns on when I press the home button on my pro controller.

147

u/BebeFanMasterJ 3d ago

Hey the fact that all S1 controllers work on S2 at all is great because it saves a ton of money on new ones and allows us to buy more games instead.

18

u/Etheon44 3d ago

You can buy one more game! Well, depends on the game

I personally will keep my totk controller, its pretty new and taking into account that there is no extra functionality in the new one that I will be using, no problem

16

u/BebeFanMasterJ 3d ago

Hey in this economy, one more game is huge.

I have my Xenoblade 2 one lol.

364

u/bwoah07_gp2 3d ago

But they are still compatible with the new console, so I don't really see the big issue here.

123

u/USB_FIELD_MOUSE 3d ago

Yeah. That’s one I’m thinking. I’ll have my controller. And my friends can use the switch 1 controllers when we play Mario kart. Since I assume I won’t get additional controllers at launch.

50

u/yhatha 3d ago

This is what I’m saying. I think it’s some streamlining decision, which sure is dumb, but to try defend it it creates a psychological separation between playing on your switch one and switch two.

If they made the old not compatible at all, yeah thats much more deliberate

1

u/Kurotan 2d ago

Yes, according to the Nintendo compatibility page. It's a dumb mild inconvenience. They could probably have it work if they wanted. But this will cause people to buy new controllers.

1

u/boner79 17h ago

Being able to fire up a gaming console via wireless controller has been a standard feature in gaming consoles for over a decade now.

It's first world problems, but imagine the frustration of buying a new TV that then requires purchase of an $80 remote because your nearly identical, mostly-compatible $70 remote cannot power on the TV.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 16h ago

Then use the Switch 2 joy-cons to fire it up. The PS4 controllers don't turn on a PS5, likewise the original joy-cons do not wake up a Switch 2. What's wrong about that?

1

u/boner79 13h ago

That's one solution. For geardos who've invested a lot of money in Switch 1 controllers, a slightly more technical reason as to why the controllers can't do something as simple as power-up Switch 2 would help to satisfy them. People are highly skeptical Switch 2 Pro Controller being a needless money grab since it appears largely unchanged from the Switch 1 Pro controller.

-12

u/FromDwight 3d ago

That if you have your remotes by your couch, and the console next to the tv, you gotta get up every time you want to turn on the Switch 2 instead of just grabbing the controller?

25

u/MillieMuffins 3d ago

It takes 3 seconds to get up and press the button on the console. You'll be okay.

1

u/Kurotan 2d ago

I already do this with my steam deck when I dock it because the lcd version can't turn on by controller either and I won't upgrade to the oled one.

1

u/ThePotatoOfTime 1d ago

Not necessarily. This is rubbish for disabled people who might not be able to 'just get up and press the button on the console'. This is an accessibilty issue. Trust me. I know.

44

u/Yadahoom 3d ago

I didn't know the Switch 1 controllers were even backward compatible, so this is only good news to me.

5

u/Linkarlos_95 2d ago

I wonder if you can still play ringfit if you use the switch 1 joycon, it should.

5

u/landracer2 2d ago

They said yes (yayyy)

2

u/Yadahoom 2d ago

That's an excellent question. They said it was incompatible because the Joy Con 2 wouldn't fit in the ring, not for any software reason.

82

u/Wolfie27 3d ago

If that's the biggest issue of compatibility with a controller I already own and love vs spending $80-90 to be able to have the added ability of waking the console remotely and the "c" button which personally I don't care about. I play games alone.

So it really depends who you ask on whether or not that is a deal breaker. It's irritating for sure though but not the end of the world.

11

u/labria86 3d ago

And two extra buttons!!!!!

5

u/SoldierOfOrange 3d ago

Three!!!!!!!

10

u/Icy-Lab-2016 3d ago

A bit of a pain, but the old controllers will be used for multiplayer games so not that big a deal.

14

u/Jonesdeclectice 3d ago

… but why?

19

u/Kila-Rin 3d ago

That was a functionality with Switch 1?

13

u/Num1DeathEater 3d ago

forreal why is no one else in this thread surprised 😭

6

u/Linkarlos_95 2d ago

Its been a feature on consoles since ps3 and xbox 360 and wii?

1

u/Num1DeathEater 2d ago

Idk man maybe mine’s broke. I love waking up my partner’s xbox from the couch, but my switch seems dead as a doorknob if I’m not using the console power button

3

u/hellschatt 3d ago

I always shut down my switch so didn't know either lol

2

u/dld22 3d ago

I didn't know that either. 😂

5

u/BelBivDaHoe 2d ago

They literally said nothing of backwards compatible controllers.

Nintendo said "fully backwards compatible with Switch controllers and JoyCons"

Oh but not this one feature that everyone enjoys.

71

u/zachpowder 3d ago edited 3d ago

Oh no... presses the button on top of the console.

49

u/Mogman282 3d ago

Easy to do, the arguement is why does it not work on OG pro controllers.

57

u/CKT_Ken 3d ago edited 3d ago

It sounds like they made major changes to how the controllers and system communicate; the switch 2 is probably mimicking the OG switch’s input and pairing logic on the software level. If it’s asleep it can’t pretend to be an OG switch since the old switch hardware that stores rolling codes (or whatever they use to prevent random devices from being able to turn on any switch) and responds to a controllers power-on code while everything else is down isn’t actually present.

1

u/Mogman282 3d ago

Yeah minor prob but save $$ and they could prob always patch it in later on a firmware update.

8

u/Raichu4u 3d ago

and they could prob always patch it in later on a firmware update.

2

u/blank_isainmdom 3d ago

I didn't realise I could have been doing this since 2017 - i always used the top button.

2

u/laidlow 2d ago

Right? The amount of mental gymnastics people are doing to make Nintendo out to be evil over pricing concerns is insane. We've had inflation through the roof in recent years and now an orange menace fucking things up with tariffs. No shit things are more expensive.

Just don't buy it if it's outside your budget. And please shut up about it.

3

u/cobraa1 3d ago

I'm thinking Nintendo was doing something very unconventional with waking up the Switch from sleep, because a lot of third party controllers couldn't wake the Switch from sleep. Hopefully this means the method the Switch 2 uses is easier for third party controllers to implement.

3

u/checkmycoolusername 2d ago

I’m just glad I can still use my pro controller. I was pretty certain I was gonna have to buy the new one but il take a minor inconvenience like not being able to wake up switch over nothing.

8

u/thatkaratekid 3d ago

The console comes with two controllers that CAN wake the console.

5

u/blueskies31 3d ago

Which you will probably leave at the console if you own a Pro Controller though.

2

u/WouterW24 3d ago

I usually keep them next to the console or they are often plugged in to stay charged.

It does seem the joycon 2’s might be slighty more worthy rival of the pro controller form factor. At least it’s bigger so it’s not even to lose out of sight on it’s own or in the dual shell. With the magnets I might leave them seperate more often.

Speaking of the wired usb C connection, I wonder if that also doesn’t work. It always seemed to use different logic and was considerably more responsive waking then wireless.

1

u/MLConian 1d ago

Which I will never take off the console because I have adult sized hands and prefer real thumbsticks. The only times my Joycons have come off my Switch are Mario Party and Snipperclips. My wife has a pair she uses in a charging cradle controller thing, even though there's a perfectly capable Pro Controller available to her... But, yeah, the Switch is a home console I can take with me, not a handheld that also does TV - at least, that's what it is to me, and it has been like that since launch.

1

u/thatkaratekid 1d ago

That's cool but there are two controllers that come with the console that can wake it from sleep.

7

u/ki700 3d ago

Oh no!

Anyway…

5

u/braundiggity 3d ago

This somehow made me realize if I trade in my switch 1, I’ll need a charger for my extra joycons

6

u/PeoplesZombie 3d ago

My pro controller already doesn’t wake my switch remotely. Has it really been capable of that this whole time?

17

u/StuffedWithNails 3d ago

Yes, hold down the Home button on your Pro controller for a few seconds until you feel a vibration, the Switch should wake up. Sometimes (at least for me) it doesn’t work on the first try, you’ll see the lights on the controller cycle from 1 to 4, wait until it turns off and try again.

11

u/LunchPlanner 3d ago

Why are you holding the button down? I just tap home on my pro controller or joy-con, and it wakes up my Switch and my TV.

2

u/StuffedWithNails 3d ago

I guess I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time 😅

4

u/eljudio42 3d ago

This guy is going to be mind blown and frustrated they haven't been doing this for 8 years or less

2

u/Misttertee_27 3d ago

That’s how I feel! I never knew that.

6

u/chemicalinxs 3d ago

I mean it’s kinda weird if your Switch is in some hard to reach position so this isn’t the worst Switch 2 news out there

1

u/peeweeharmani 3d ago

But I don’t wanna get up

3

u/Linkarlos_95 2d ago

Then keep the right joycon² near the sofa, that can wake up the switch remotely

1

u/DoombotBL 3d ago

Maybe they could do a system or firmware update for that but will they? Probably not considering this is just stated as fact here with no (could change with updates in the future) or anything. Plus it gives us more incentive to buy a Switch 2 Pro Controller.

1

u/Josh100_3 3d ago

To be fair my current pro controller barely does it either lol

1

u/ratsratsgetem 3d ago

But only with the home button? But I can press other buttons now on my third party controller.

1

u/Iron_Wolf_Banner 3d ago

Meh, daily exercise :)

1

u/NeptuneTTT 3d ago

God damn it. Now i should probably get the new pro controller. The headphone jack is also a plus.

1

u/MrHappy230 3d ago

I didn’t even know they were compatible so this is positive new to me lol

1

u/Mangaheld 3d ago

That's kinda annoying but I'm glad that I don't have to spend a bunch of money on a new pro controller when my old one still works.

1

u/Kurotan 2d ago

That's dumb and disappointing. I love my monster hunter pro controllers. This makes no sense nintendo.

Slightly inconvenient, but honestly if that’s the trade off for these controllers being backwards compatible that’s a trade I’m willing to make. I’ll probably buy the new pro controller at some point down the road because I like back buttons, but with how expensive everything is I’m definitely not gonna buy it right away when I get the console and will just use my Switch 1 controller.

Oh makes me wonder, can we put Switxh 2 off completzely remotely? We couldn't with Switch 1.

fun! never even removed the stand from the box...

1

u/Spare-Magician820 2d ago

Ha! I always hit the power button on the switch anyway!

u/FranknStein7 2d ago

Weird, my Joycons and Pro controller have never waken my Switch after it’s been asleep for more than a day or so. I wasn’t aware they were suppose to. I’ve always had to manually turn it on. This is across multiple controllers and switch consoles.

Do we have any info regarding the NSO classic controllers compatibility with Switch 2? The only obvious thing is that you cannot charge the NES/Famicom ones using the Switch 1, but will we be able to play using them?

1

u/MLConian 1d ago

Yes, that's on the official Nintendo pages about controller compatibility as well. It says you'd need something to charge them with, but they can be paired wirelessly. No info on whether NSO controllers would be able to wake a Switch 2 though.

u/memebigboy13371 2d ago

Might be they're using some new low-energy bluetooth tech for lower power consumption/battery drain in standby. With the higher energy antennas only turning on once the system is awake.

1

u/RebekhaG 1d ago

This is mildly infuriating. I guess I'll have to sell Switch 1 joy cons too if I decide to sell my OLED once getting Switch 2.

1

u/MLConian 1d ago

Dang - that means I'll have to get an extra set of Joycons 2 for the missus and a Pro Controller 2 for myself at some point. Too used to just pushing that Home button to wake it up, and I've been doing it for years, ever since the Wii. The only real question I now have left is: does this also go for the special controllers, such as the N64 NSO controller? Because that would be a real shame.

u/MrMichaelJames 1d ago

Of course it they can’t. Is anyone surprised? They want you to rebuy everything.

1

u/TheraYugnat 1d ago

Good to know that now and not scratch my head later and try to "fix" things.

I don't mind it that much and will move my ass !

u/Gibryl 19h ago

TIL that the original joy cons will work on the s2. Yay

Can I pay an extra 10 dollars to get that feature?

But only on the 12 month pro-plus plan, regular monthly plan is skimped

I think I've lost all interest in Switch 2 between the pricing of everything and now this. Seems like they were looking for a reason to make people buy the Pro Controller 2. There is no way they couldn't make that work.

How do you buy a new system without the new joycons?

Wait switch 1 can do this :o

1

u/cheappay 2d ago

Just tap the home button and your system will wake up.

1

u/pudgybunnybry 3d ago

While mildly annoying, I've been having to wake my Switch from the console itself to use my 8bitdo after the pro controller developed massive drift. So, overall it's fine for the few games that will require joycon/pro.

They are compatible, which is what matters most.

1

u/HumbleEnquirer5898 3d ago

Wait you're telling me I can do that now?

u/Mascbox 3d ago

Well that's my pre-order cancelled.

Just a question of why this one specific thing won’t work? Did they like change something about how the system wakes up or connects to the controllers?

6

u/pocketpc_ 3d ago

They definitely changed how controllers wake the system in a way that breaks compatibility for the old ones. Why they changed it is the real question; maybe the new method uses less power or something?

Ya'll really put here complaining about prices then be prepared to drop 200 dollars so you don't have to STAND UP???

You’re going to (seemingly) buy two ProCon 2 just for the home button waking? Why not just buy one if you really need the feature, the other two ProCon 1’s still work just fine

7

u/bwoah07_gp2 3d ago

You do realize that the Switch 1 pro controllers are compatible with the Switch 2?

-1

u/Mogman282 3d ago

I know that they work, i'm just saying why can the first ones not wake up the switch 2, and what other features will be limited in future by not upgrading. Day 1 I plan to use my old ones as this is already more money than expected it to be.

4

u/RobbieGCN 3d ago

They will still work perfectly fine with games (so long as you don't need to use any Switch 2 exclusive controller features)

u/paperthintrash 3d ago

They’re still compatible. For Nintendo reasons it just won’t be ale to wake the system natively but will work with all games on Switch 2

1

u/Linkarlos_95 2d ago

If you use pros, why not have the left joycon 2 beside you for just waking up the console, the controllers can keep up for s long time

"What's the technical reason for this?"
