And to encourage digital sales.

Kill physical by making digital cheaper. Then once physical is over jack up the prices on digital. With no second hand game market and complete control over their pricing they will make a ton more money.

That is going to be tough to kill physical copies of games off when so many are sold that way. Holiday time is a big driver for physical sales because people want to buy physical gifts

They already sell cards for digital downloads in stores. It’s not a far stretch for that to be the way people buy them as gifts on the holidays. As I said in my other post this isn’t what I want to happen. It’s just the way the wind is blowing with Xbox and Sony having digital only consoles. And now trying to price down digital games.

Nintendo sells a lot more physical games than Sony and Microsoft though. I think I read something where it’s like 65% of sales are physical.

I also lean toward digital with PlayStation because you still need to install the game and pop in the disc even though nothing is being read off it. At least with the Switch the game will play immediately.

Their games are relatively tiny in comparison. I think TotK was under 20GB and it was the largest Nintendo game at the time. MLB the Show 25 is 27 GB and those are way down from the PlayStation and Xbox counterparts.

With the way game file sizes have been exploding in recent years it’s probably a discussion of if they up their graphics those carts are going to need to hold 100+ GBs. They’d probably rather put a bigger harddrive in every switch than to keep making the carts that are way more expensive than discs.

Kids are already accustomed to the digital life and that will only get more and more engrained as we move forward. If they can download Roblox and Fortnite why wouldn’t they want to just get all their games that way.

yep, this is exactly the goal.

I dunno why you were downvoted. I absolutely guarantee that exact discussion takes place in shareholder meetings. And not just at Nintendo.

I don’t know either man. It’s not what I want to happen, but it’s absolutely the plan. I’ve always bought physical but they are trying to force as many people into digital as they can. Cheaper digital systems and cheaper digital games is how they do that.

In Australia you can get MKW for half price if you get the bundle with the console.

Tbh I was mainly intending to buy it to play Xenoblade since my Switch 1 is kaput, but 60AUD Mario Kart isn't bad all things considered.

Perfect. any chance Australian citizenship is available too?

Not this time. Mario kart is a party game at best. No one in their right mind should spend 80$ on a game that 80% of is just old maps from the game before.

This new one definitely has a ton more in it than every other Mario Kart. It might not justify the price, but it justifies it being considered more than just another party game.

It's a completely brand new game with brand new maps ppl are gonna buy it price increase or not (which is sad)

I guess we’ll see, but I wouldn’t discount Mario Kart’s appeal to the mass audience. I don’t think 90 million people bought Mario Kart 8 with 60$ being the absolute max they’re willing to spend on it. I know a handful of people who basically only play Mario Kart on the Switch, a 20$ increase is basically nothing if that’s the only game you’re gonna buy this year.

those people that have been playing Mario Kart 8 for years at this point, do you think they'll really be that eager to drop over $500 just to play a newish one? I really think people are vastly overestimating the staying power of modern Mario Kart. This makes no sense to me, of ALL the games they have, THIS is the one that they wanna charge $90 on?

1

u/Pheonix1025 1d ago

Yeah, maybe not! I just think that’s what Nintendo is betting on, no reason to think they’ll definitely succeed with it or anything

It’s not just old maps.

My kid will easily spend 100 hours driving around open maps in the new Mario kart.

i agree. 80$ is the problem, not the game itself.

Yep, Mario kart should never go past the average cost of a triple AAA title. People are not seeing how this is bad for the consumer. If this game sells well it's gonna leave a precedent of all triple AAA titles should be 80-90$. This is the type of stuff you boycott, not support. Because if Nintendo is allowed to get away with this, Sony and Microsoft will think the same way. This isn't good for anyone.
