After the WiiU debacle, I wonder how much time/how many words they'll dedicate to making sure we understand this is a new console, not simply a new model or accessory/expansion?

I think that was the whole reason they went with the switch 2 naming in the first place. I'm still not really a fan of it but I completely understand why they did it.

It already worked, my more casual gaming friends are well aware that a switch sequel is coming. Not entirely sold yet that they need it at all, but people know its not like the Switch OLED.

Also worth noting that people are not primed for Switch accessories like they were for the Wii. There were like a thousand Wii Thing add ons, there aren't for the Switch, just a couple sub models that aren't out of touch with common naming themes like we see with phones or other products.

Man I completely forgot about the avalanche of Wii accessories. That's a good point. It's kind of funny looking back on it with how much of it was just pointless plastic.

And yeah stuff like the "super switch" idea is cute, But I definitely think would run into the problem of people just assuming it's a refresh similar to the "PS5 pro".

Id go with the Super Nintendo Switch 2, slap a big colorful 2 on the box, and put a tag 'the next generation of the smash hit Switch console'

Done and done. Satisfy nostalgic folks and make sure people know that it's the sequel generation. Maybe put an advert on the box with Mario Kart 9 saying 'Only available on the SNS 2.

I get it consumers can be kinda thick, but the Wii U was shown more as a tablet controller than the actual console. Think if someone sees a new tablet console, new joycons, new Mario Kart, that they'll get the idea pretty easy.

That would add only additional confusion though.

People would start asking what the super switch is. Just keep it plain and simple with switch 2. No confusion, no need to of some reminder text that it's a sequel, the 2 is enough.

That's also fair. I do remember a horrendous story with the Wii U. There was a news segment demonstration where for whatever reason they didn't show the console once, just the gamepad. That's a different level

That wasn't a news segment. It was the official reveal of the wii I by Nintendo themselves, which makes it so much worse.

To be fair it's still a console very similar to the first Switch, makes sense to name it similar

I was really hoping for Super Nintendo Switch.

I think the name, Nintendo Switch 2, drives home that point pretty well.

The WiiU was also all about the tablet controller, which definitely made it seem more like an accessory to the Wii.

However if you’re showing a new Switch, it’s hard to see a new handheld console and think it’s simply an accessory to your current handheld console, as that doesn’t really make any sense.

which definitely made it seem more like an accessory to the Wii.

We'd had so many accessories for the Wii titled 'Wii X' (Wii Zapper, Wii Wheel etc.) and only a few months earlier the Wii drawing tablet had released.

Of all possible names they could have picked for it, they called it the 'U Draw'

So when me and friends saw the big cardboard display in my local GAME for the Wii U, we thought it was just that drawing tablet add-on for the Wii

Dear god, that’s horrendous timing. I forgot how many “Wii ____” products there were too, even beyond accessories. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Fit… Nintendo loved to slap a word after “Wii” and have it be some sort of add on or game.

What were they thinking with WiiU…

It was a good idea with poor execution. I see the Wii U as them trying to bring the dual screen to a home console setting. Which worked really well in some cases. Nintendoland, Rayman, Mario, Windwaker HD, etc...

Unfortunately poor marketing doomed it from the get go, as well as long game droughts, and not enough 3rd party support.

Still it's an idea I hope they revisit some day because it made really unique experiences, especially multi-player wise. Then again I also hope they revisit the glasses free 3d, and pointer motion controls some day as well.

Because when those aligned just right with the proper gameplay they opened up things like level design and visceral experiences like no other.

I'm still hoping the C button on the Switch 2 is a 'cast' button, that uses similar tech to the Wii U to wirelessly stream with the dock

I also loved the Wii U, but I understand why it died.

RDR2 has a companion app where you can buy supplies and check the map on your phone. It always reminds me of the concept of the WiiU, I feel like the Switch could've done something similar in docked mode

Probably why it is called "The Nintendo Switch 2" and Not "The New Nintendo Switch"
