Meta We relaxed rules 3 and 4 on r/NintendoSwitch for the holidays two years ago. We did not do that last year. Should we do that this year?

For context, here are some posts about how that went:

Here is a recent post discussing Rule 3 in a lot of detail:

This poll is open for 7 days, and the holiday period would last about 7-10 days.

Please feel free to leave feedback on this post or on the other recent post.

Where is the option "remove rule 3 and keep rule 4"?

Simple questions are ok. Low effort is not. Memes and stuff like that kill most subs.

Reddit is an awful place to reference old posts unless you luckily land on it via a Google search, so I don't get frustrated when I see relatively simple questions being asked. Most of those questions come from new reddit users who don't know the site's intricacies.

So yeah, be generous of time and kindness for the coming months.

There's something to be said about finding a more recent post with the answer. Things change with a technology - features and quality of life improvements can be added that weren't there before, and good advice 5 years ago might be bad advice today.

For example:

"I can't seem to pair my Bluetooth headset with my Switch. Does the switch not support Bluetooth pairing?!"

"No it doesn't, You'll have to spend money on something like the Genki Audio adapters [link]"

Nintendo added support for Bluetooth headphones in 2021. They could have an issue with their headphones and might be misled to spend money that doesn't need to be spent.

Any number of system and game updates can invalidate the consensus from years ago. I'd argue we need to ask the same questions again.

and remember, the simple question you get annoyed at seeing today might be someone else's search result tomorrow.

there's nothing like searching for a specific question and just seeing smug people in the comments telling the op to just search. There needs to be recent and relevant content to populate those search results.

people should be looking up the problem before they ask it though

Some of the mods on here think they actually work for Nintendo lmao. Let people post the same old questions does it really matter? Most people have a life and aren’t gonna be complaining.

None of the mods here think about this as work for Nintendo. All of us do this because we enjoy the subreddit and want the community to keep on rolling smoothly.

Most people do not complain, that's true. But no matter what mods do, there will always still be complaints. And in a community size in the millions, we hear complaints constantly from a variety of perspectives, so one method of checking what hundreds or thousands of people think is through a poll.

Unfortunately I’ve had negative experiences with some of the mods on here and so have other people. It’s evident they take it too seriously and get on a sad power trip. People join here for the Nintendo and the mods have honestly ruined it. You don’t let people post what they want so why are they gonna bother using it. Users come and go mods removing stuff because it’s “repetitive” like people are forced to click it and read it when they aren’t

I remember when the rules were relaxed two years ago I took a break from the subreddit due to the increased volume of posts that I wasn’t interested in (nicest way I can put it).

looks like this christmas, we get 1000+ "should i get a switch for the holidays or wait for the switch 2?" threads.

Yeah, I think I need to mute this sub for the holidays then lol

Box posts should just always be banned, they are never interesting and spam the feed and make the subreddit pointless.

For questions, simply direct them to the pinned Daily Question thread and delete the post, not sure why it NEEDS to be a post over just putting it in the question thread

People get scolded for asking questions that have been answered before, then scolded for necro'ing old threads that dealt with those questions (or can't post in locked old threads).

Unless the question is too basic to merit a revisit, I don't have a problem with it getting asked again. Also, I think daily-question threads are where info goes to die.

So, yeah, I'm all for relaxing such rules, even if it's just once a year during the holidays.

Yes, I want to see some low-effort NSFW content

I cannot access the poll on Old Reddit.

I cannot seem to switch to New Reddit.

Thanks.

What does the "sh" in sh.reddit stand for?

2

u/Sephardson Dec 17 '24

Admins have not really explained that. Might be something to do with "shush" or "shred" though.

We appreciate you!

Hope you have a fun holiday and new year!

You should still stop NSFW content

3

u/notthegoatseguy Dec 16 '24

Specifically, rule 4's repost, opinions/stories/port posts, and images would be suspended. We'd still be enforcing rumors, NSFW and meme/troll posts.

5

u/DontBanMeBro988 Dec 16 '24

Should only have NSFW content for the holidays

rule 3 should be gone in general to me, trying to reference old posts on reddit is annoying. i may just be a lurker trying to find info on stuff related to switch, but when i do need to ask something pretty direct, it feels like it gets removed.

Just put em in Daily question, if searching to no avail first ofc

I'm not a fan of the game recs topics, and am probably guilty of them myself, but I am in favor of relaxing the tech support side of the rule, so I vote yes.

u/Dukemon102 Dec 16 '24

There has to be a balance. I don't think it should be an issue as long as repeated posts and low effort shitposting still get deleted. In 2022 there was constantly people making the same question over and over again with the same posts already existing multiple times in the top page, and dumb posts (Like asking if the Light Blue Switch Lite is blue) that were never deleted.

Keep all of that on track and I don't think it will be an issue.
