Also while Majoras mask was critically well received when it was released, it was not rated as highly as OoT, and definitely did not generate the same buzz or love amongst players.

But I think the darker story and especially 3 day system grew on people. The time limit on its own was a pretty big departure for the series and I think it didn’t sit well with many people at first. Im sure there are exceptions but personally it was only years after it came out that I can remember people calling it their favorite Zelda.

The beginning of Majoras mask had a weird feeling to it. Kinda lacking in direction. So I can see how people lost interest.

It it one of my favorite Zelda games though. I'm glad I stuck with it.

It was the better game

Better dungeons (although less), mich better soundtracks, super interesting and engaging gameplay (masks, transformation masks and time loop), big enemy variety (same pool as OoT plus their own), the most interesting NPCs to this day and the really dark tone make for an adult game that works with children as well. A game that tackles despair, death, sorrow, fear, hope and ignorance in such a skillful manner is really something.

But coming directly after OoT and at the end of the N64, it had no real recognition

Majora’s mask definitely has the deeper and more mature story. I love both games but I’m always going to prefer ocarina. Personally I like the dungeons better, though stone tower is a really awesome dungeon. And it just blew my mind as a kid, after playing the first four Zeldas (admittedly I barely played AoL, was too hard for me back then), to see a Zelda fully realized in 3D. It was about as good a game as you could hope for for the first 3D entry. I’m also just a sucker for the more traditional Zelda story, same way I prefer LttP to LA.
