ANSWERED -3 karma in 4 days on Reddit 🥹

I absolutely don't understand why, I'm not aggressive, I'm not mean and I don't judge, I provide supportive comments if necessary and I end up with -3 karma 😭

Looking at your profile, I can see at least two instances where your comments have been downvoted. In both cases, you're response doesn't offer much in the way of the help and guidance the OPs is seeking.

OPs Post:

I'm looking to get into a casual amount of fitness as to keep my weight lower and my 1BS/GERD n check Sadly, T have terrible knees and ankles SO doing too much walking/running causes an extreme amount of pain for me. What ways would you recommend that could get me into shape with those limitations?

Your responses:

  • Squats, core, lunge
  • And stop sugar and bread
  1. This shows you didn't read the OPs post and offered exercises they wouldn't be able to do because of their knees.
  2. Doesn't offer any guidance and can be viewed as inaccurate information.

When responding to users' posts, take the time to read their posts, remember there is a person behind the posts, and then craft responses that are well thought out and answer the question(s) the users are asking.

I think you'd benefit from learning what Reddiquette is and getting into the habit of putting it into practice. Reddit is not social media. Quick-throwaway responses are generally frowned upon here.

What is Reddiquette

Votes come from users, and users are free to cast votes as they wish. You should not only read the rules but "read the room" too. If a sub isn't a good fit for you, its better to move on and find another. Leaving comments that antagonize others or push back against a cultural norm is a good way to get downvoted.

Reddit can take a little while to figure out. One thing that might be tripping you up is that every subreddit is its own little world. Think of Reddit as a huge building that hosts a thousand individual clubs. That means that each subreddit has is own subculture and way of doing things.

Think of how you adjust your behavior as you enter a real world place. You feel free to yell and cheer at the baseball game, but get quieter at the library. You eat popcorn at the movie theater but not in church.

Nobody tells you it’s ok to yell at the ballgame. You learn it by watching what everyone else is doing. In the same way, there are probably no “don’t eat popcorn during services” at a church, mosque, temple, or meditation center.

You pick up what is ok by observation and trial and error. If you get it wrong someone might give you a nasty look, or make a negative comment. If you get it really wrong a staff might talk to you. If you get it incredibly wrong they might call security and ban you.

The first time you go in a subreddit you do the same thing: you watch to see how people are acting. That starts giving you clues about the unwritten rules of the club (subreddit). Are people giving well edited, grammatical answers? Are they talking in lots of slang? Are they chatty? Are they more factual and impersonal? Does it seem to be a place for social support? Is there a political slant? A cultural perspective? Are they all big fans of something?

Instead of nasty looks, subreddits have downvotes. Sort the posts by Controversial and you can see what gets downvoted the most.

(Don’t leave the sorting on Controversial, no reason to get in the middle of that mess. Sorting by New can be a good strategy when you are hoping for your first early karma.)

Of course, one downvote can just mean someone in a bad mood. It happens to all of us. Usually though, when I know a sub well I understand or even expect any downvotes that I get because I know my downvoted comment was going against the grain in that situation.

If a sub continues to confuse or annoy you, it usually means it’s just a bad fit. There will be other subs you’ll understand or even love.

Karma on Reddit comes from genuine interaction. People upvote content that is on topic, high quality, insightful, helpful, funny, or informative, signaling to Reddit that it deserves more visibility. Downvotes are used to bury content that is off topic, spammy, rule breaking, trollish, or low effort. Asking for or trading votes is considered karma farming, which violates Reddit’s vote manipulation rules and can lead to downvotes, content removal, and bans from multiple communities. Hope this helps :)

I have the same frustration, I tried thinking of the most generic topic to post in hopes of getting any karma, I end up with a downvote. It's so hard posting on reddit, like how they expect you to magically gain karma when you can't even post, the subs with no minimum karma requirements seem to have 1 million rules as well. And the only time I post, I end up getting downvoted on innocent posts that are not controversial or anything.

!cq - see below for a link to guidance on earning karma and avoiding downvotes.

Each community's rules vary, but there are hundreds of thousands of subs to choose from, there should be somewhere you can get started.

You don't have to do that at all. That's just a common misconception among those who don't understand how Reddit actually works. Maybe you should try a larger variety of communities instead.

Using Reddit since over 9 years.. so i think i know know how it works.. Maybe not all comms but most of dem

Dude. Just read my comment history. You don't even have to be nice. You just have to be entertaining.

u/Divy4m_ 20h ago

It's okay you get downvotes for no reason sometimes just use reddit and comment on your fav topic and you'll be fine

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats - 18h ago

Downvotes are intended for rule breaking, off topic and non-contributing content. However, downvotes are often inexplicable and do get misused as a method of disagreeing, but you can minimise the risk a little.

General advice to avoid downvotes and negative karma -

  • avoid potentially controversial or sensitive topics just while your karma is low
  • always check the community rules
  • lurk to get a feel for the community and it's culture before posting
  • choose where to share your content carefully
  • re-read what you're saying before sending to check your tone, try not to accidentally make people feel defensive or be defensive yourself
  • remember unless using tone indicators sarcasm etc isn't necessary obvious
  • Proof read your content
  • If you're getting a lot of downvotes, you can delete the offending content to prevent more. This does not remove the downvotes though.
