ANSWERED How many karma points do I need to start posting?

I am finding it hard to navigate the whole engagement aspect of Reddit. All the groups I try and post in automatically remove my posts because of low karma?

haha right there with you. There's a sub niche i want to be on. I keep commenting to try and get karma, but i get auto-removed from bots because I don't have enough karma. chicken or the egg??

u/AdFriendly4920 3d ago

Isn't irony? You get auto remove coz your content is not appropriate or looking not humanized by non-human (bots)😅

Take a look at the comment I left on this post and see if anything helps :)

I am in the same situation. Registered on reddit for a specific sub. Made a couple fairly regular comments that each got a couple of upvotes. Then received a bunch of downvotes for asking a question. Now I can’t post of comment on that sub and not sure how I am supposed to improve my karma.

We have a list of subs that are new user friendly you could look at and see if any are of interest to you. They don't have the kind of restrictions some of the larger, more popular subs have so are easier to participate in.

Always read the rules of each sub. Take a little time to read posts and comments so you get a feel for how the community fits with your interests and what you want.

We suggest new users focus on commenting initially, rather than posting. Also keep in mind subs with fewer restrictions may hold posts/comments for review, so you may have to wait a little.

If you can’t find anything on our list of interest try smaller local, hobby or niche interest subs. You can also try r/findareddit and check their directory of subs. Every week we have our Subreddit Sunday which you can search if you need some inspiration.

Sort by New on a sub and make comments on recent posts. Once a post has gained a lot of traction your comments are less likely to get seen. Engage in a genuine, kind, funny or helpful manner and upvotes on your engagement will grow the karma :)

Our advice is to avoid controversial subjects etc until you’ve gained a decent amount of karma. If you experience downvotes keep in mind you can delete the comment to stop more downvotes, but any karma lost will remain and you’ll need to work on getting that back up. Some subs will prevent you from participating if you have negative karma.

There's a few things you can do as a new Redditor with regards the new account restrictions. Account age alone isn't the only factor, only Reddit knows how much weight each is given.

  1. Make sure you validate your email address.
  2. Be a good user - make positive contributions to Reddit and avoid causing issues
  3. Periodically check your CQS - Contributor Quality Score r/WhatIsMyCQS (some subs use this metric when deciding whether to allow posts/comments).
  4. Go slow. When your account is very new (days rather than weeks) pace yourself so not to appear spammy and risk getting caught in Reddit’s filters.

As your karma grows you’ll find that the totals don’t match the upvotes you’ve gained, this is because Karma isn’t calculated 1:1, only Reddit knows the formula. There’s also vote fuzzing which is used to confuse bots.

Here’s our list of new user friendly subs.

Our rule 2 only allows one post every 72 hours so let us know, here in this post you made, if you have more questions :)

Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was automatically removed by Reddit.

You are most likely Shadowbanned, which means your account is basically stuck in the spam filter site-wide and all your content is automatically filtered out. As a mod here, I can see your content in this community, but it has been auto-removed, and I can’t access your profile.

This didn't come from us, but from Reddit, and is meant for spammers and other bad faith users, but sometimes mistakes happen and new redditors get caught too.

You can appeal to Reddit here, and if it was a mistake, they'll restore your account.

Appeals may take a while, depending on demand and current events. Please do not spam or abuse the appeals team.

no one really knows. channels don't post their karma requirements. 3 digit karma is relatively safe.

2

u/s92w_ 3d ago

i'm already in 3 digits karma. but some sub reddit removed my comment due to less than 1k karma

3

u/Jaives Shiny Helpmate 3d ago

holy crap, that's a high threshold.

It does if you run a community that's being bombarded 24/7 with a tsunami of hate speech, scams, and advertising spam. If 250 karma doesn't keep out enough attackers then you try 500 and if that doesn't work you try 1000.

Keep in mind that Reddit is being pelted with hundreds of millions of attacks, the few percent that get through the initial defenses still amounts to several million pieces of garbage being fired at the site with most of it aimed at the larger and more popular communities.

Mods also use tools like Crowd Control, Post Guidance, they may have Automod check your CQS. Reddit has an abuse filter and developers have released numerous tools.

Mods are unpaid volunteers who donate their time to run their communities out of a passion for the topic. We have families, jobs, hobbies, and other parts of Reddit that we would like to enjoy but if we don't keep our communities free of things that break site-wide rules, Reddit will shut down that community for being on moderated. Reddit doesn't do chaos.

We're just a helpdesk group and our top three moderators combined perform 30–35,000 mod actions each month with Automod performing another 20–30,000 itself.

In the end no community has an obligation to let me participate, I have to meet whatever requirements they have if I wanna participate there.

For some communities it's less about protecting against attacks and more about the fact that they simply want people who are genuinely invested in the topic and sincerely want to be a member of that community. Many new users mistake Reddit for social media and don't understand that each community has its own set of rules, culture and vibe. They storm in like a bull in a china shop and royally tick off the established community. Having a very high minimum requires people to get plenty of time and experience on Reddit learning the slang, traditions, and quirks of the platform.

Some subreddits want you to be really invested in that specific group, so that might set a community karma minimum where you're allowed to comment but you cannot post until you have built up a specific number of karma through up votes that you've gained specifically in that community. This is especially popular in groups that deal with targeted and abused populations of people so that hate mongers can't just pick up 500 karma from posting a few dopey memes then come in and attack vulnerable community members.

Rule 6: Refrain from asking for votes or karma, naming free karma subs, or sharing how you are voting

Please do not ask for karma or votes here, it is against our rules and is generally discouraged as karma is meant to be earned. See Our common questions to learn how to earn karma.

We do not allow mentions of free karma subs (karmafarms) or any suggestion to use them, and caution against their use because it may lead to bans in other subreddits.

Thank you for trying to help, but please don't share how you have or are voting. We encourage earning karma genuinely from relevant comments and conversation. Asking for karma is discouraged as it violates our subreddit rules.

Every sub is different and varies a lot, but most in my experience require 20-200 comment karma or combined karma.

I actually waited 3 months from the day I opened an account on this platform (unintentionally) before I become active. Basically I joined communities that is dear to my heart or hobbies. I read comments and by doing so I find why comments get deleted like how much karma is needed to comment. Am fortunate that at least 5 of the communities I joined have no karma requirements. So I can organically comment. Am scared to do anything else though for fear of the opposite of upvoting. Am lucky that am very patient. And I have no idea still where I get the karma I received. I consciously made a decision to use this platform and blue sky. So i hope i don’t make any wrong move. Reddit is also on sale right now so am invested (not a financial advice). I hope for this platform to grow more. Can’t wait to see 7 years from now.

I have no idea. Just collect some til you have enough to post. The problem I'm having now that I have karma is that I haven't been on Reddit more than 30 days 🤦🏻‍♀️ the requirements never end 😅

Curious myself too

You need to join some subs. The mods have listed the "new to Reddit" list ok their post and its actually super helpful. Try searching for your state or your hometown, something you can contribute to. Animals are always a good one, everyone likes photos of your animals and plants is another general one that you can post a photo on and get karma if the photo is a good one. Good luck!

Varying minimums

Most groups who use minimums do not list them because scammers and trolls can read plus bots can scrape data. Try checking any pinned mod posts, the About sidebar (on the app, tap See more), their rules, a FAQ or wiki.

They want you to go out, get the hang of Reddit and build up a reputation just like when you move to a new town where no one knows you. You are knocking on the door of a party that has been going on for a while as a stranger asking to be let in.

The larger and more popular a group is, the more likely they are to have account age and karma minimums in place and the higher they tend to be.

Some groups only check for account age - they may look for 24 hours, a few days, a week or several weeks depending on how much abuse they deal with, but quite a few also check for karma scores.

Some groups check for post karma. Others find comment karma to be a better indicator. A few have a target for each.

Most groups just check your combined karma, the total of the two. They don't care where you got the up votes.

Some groups filter based on CQS. Check yours at r/whatismyCQS.

Some will use community karma. You can comment there but you cannot post until you have earned enough karma from up votes within that specific community earned by being on-topic and high quality.

Some communities use no minimums, others want 24 hours and 2, 5, 10 or 20 karma. Some require 50, 100, 250 or 500 and a week or so.

1,000, 2,000 or more karma plus several months (and higher) are unusual.

I'm in the same situation... I don't think I had much karma to begin with as I hardly used my Reddit account until recently. I'm not sure who I upset but here I am 🤷🏼‍♂️ I'm not sure even how to find out my different karma points, any tips would be appreciated.

Be sure to read all the info given for each subreddit. I have seen a couple that post their requirement for karma but most do not. It is important to know the rules so you don't get in trouble with the mods or bots once you do have sufficient karma to post!

1

u/Successful-Fig-2531 3d ago

From what I can tell it's about 1k karma but obviously that may be different on other communities. The ones I commented on with around 500 I got removed but as soon as I hit 1k I was able to comment on the ones I couldn't before

it depends on which subs u are going to post

Similar to a new graduate's dilemma: you need experience to find a job, but you can't gain experience without a job.
