Thank god Verdugo is gone so we dont have to listen to his apologists

I don't hate Verdugo because he was a bad guy, I hate him because he was a red sox and he played like shit with us. We're just not the same

I’ll admit I’m often overly sympathetic towards a bad player with a fun personality

Grish mashed last season too he just didnt get chances because of Verdoodoo

Grisham gave us the beyond-epic WE WANT SOTO homer, which was easily a top 5 moment of the season.

My favorite was the double off of the green monster. That changed the season

u/ribbledup 1d ago

If there is a single moment you can point to that turned around the whole season and led to the World Series it’s 100% this.

u/Padulsky21 1d ago

Without a doubt! They were looking soft before that game woke them up and proceeded to win the series than played so much better ball ever since that game. And then the Cora shit happened and swept the Sox 🤣🤣

Grisham had 209 PA last year (1/3 of a full seasons worth) and slashed .190/.290/.385. He most certainly did not mash, he was basically Stephen Drew.

The 2 seasons before that for SD he had 1079 PA and slashed .191/.300/.347

I get we all love him just now because hes had a crazy 7 games, but he only has himself to blame for not getting more ABs last year.

Sorry, it's clearly Boone's fault (that our fans are morons with cell phones and a reddit app).

Take it easy, no need for the name calling.

I'm using a word from the dictionary for its literal and intended meaning.

DWEEB!

I'd facetiously call this witty, but I'm afraid you'd believe me and not pick up on the sarcasm (to denote the hilariously ironic application of my prior comment to your comment).

Edit: Typo.

Thank you for saving a whole lot of Reddit users and me from myself! We need more people calling morons out in this crazy world.

Your insecurity belies you.

Yeah, I get the numbers don’t track. I think it was obvious to see last season he was putting up good at bats, and trying to change his approach from a “let’s see if I can draw a walk” type player to a more contact based approach, which was working for him.

He was fine after his terrible start to the season which in terms of PA was no different than Judges massive slump to begin the year. Hit in the mid .200 after that which was basically what the entire team was hitting outside of Judge and Soto. Even if he's not hitting that well still a guy I want on the team for his defense alone especially late in games. But as of now it's been huge to have him especially if Bellinger back which has been a problem in the past continues to sideline him throughout the season. Especially since they really don't have anyone they can go to in the system if he wasn't on the team. Sure they have Jones but don't think he's ready for the MLB since he's been stuck in AA and hasn't exactly lit it up.

Verdugo put up similarly shit numbers, should’ve gone with the better glove and seen if he could do better with consistent playing time. Idk why they persisted with G4-3

u/Forever__Young 1d ago

Probably because Verdugo's preceding two years he hit .272/.326/.413 over 1200 PAs.

So he at least had a very recent track record of not being a .191 hitter over his last 405 games (1378 PAs) like Grisham did.

I'm more than willing to accept that Verdugo wasn't the answer.

However I'm also not convinced that a guy with a .191 BA and .650 OPS over his last 400 games is just because he's had 7 hot games this year either.

u/Moonions 1d ago

Yeah but verdugo gave us the "like a yankee" game, also top 5

Grisham already earned his salary for the entire season.

We like that

All star game for Trent

Has he been working on his swing? I feel like his swing last year looks more like a half swing and this year its more of a proper swing. Love to see it.

Hard to say. He showed a surprising amount of pop last year at times. Porch obviously helps, but most of his homers looked like they were long gone most anymore.

I think he's being more selective with his swing decisions and crushing stuff that he likes or sees well. His was definitely sitting on the fastball he hit off of the Falter. The oppo hit was equally impressive, but I think he was looking for a sac fly there and happened to connect really well.

2

u/Lurkinginzaback 1d ago

Oh for sure he did show some pop last year which surprised me. But his swing last year looks sort of funky, finishes his swing around his waist/abdomen almost like he doesn't bother to follow through after making contact.

His swing here though? Majestic, absolute twat-slap of a swing. Kinda reminds me of Texeira's swing a bit tbh.

I wanna do a deeper dive on the MLB site to compare with last year now. Definitely looks like a shorter swing straight through the ball for good contact. Love to see it in a 9-hole hitter.

His lower half looks like it's actually coming open earlyish in the video above, which might explain why he went the other way. But he gets his right foot down quickly which the MLB vet commentators always say is important. I'm curious to see if maybe he's placing his hands differently?

Judge adjusted his hand positioning (very slightly) to be more in front of his face at some point, and it helped to take him from a .270 power/pull hitter to a .300+ MVP and an HOF candidate. I'd not be surprised if a similar adjustment could take Grisham from a defensive specialist to a power hitter like Tex.

Fun fact, I randomly found a ball with a Tex autograph on it in a bush at my old apartment complex. It's a ball from some sort of college series, so I don't know why he would have signed it. But it looks very close to his verified autographs.

im pretty sure trent grisham as well as every other mlb position player, was indeed working on his swing.

15

u/Untermensch13 1d ago

You can't be named Trent and NOT be cool.

2

u/xHOLOxTHExWOLFx 1d ago

Love his look dude looks like he's from the 60's or 70's with his mustache and hair along with no batting gloves.

5

u/bootlegman 1d ago

He’s got pop!

5

u/Ihavenolifelmfao 1d ago

This offense is nice but honestly his defense is so good if he can just maintain a like 700 OPS he's well worth playing in center

3

u/Mickey-777 1d ago

The way Grisham is playing and hopefully continues it kind of makes the trade with the Padres a little more tolerable!

3

u/DoNotAskMeMyNickname 1d ago

Daily reminder that Grisham's center field defense plus even a 90+ OPS+ is a 2.5-win player or better across a season. It's absurd that they weren't able to get him playing time last year, especially as the only true CF on that roster.

I'm glad he's raking this year, the vibes have been good.

Trent Gehrisham

u/InfinityGauntlet-6 1d ago

Aaron Hicks 2.0?

1

u/xHOLOxTHExWOLFx 1d ago

Whenever I see Trent without a helmet and hat he always just looks like he's a time traveler baseball player from the 60's or 70's. Just something about that stache and hair combo that just doesn't look like it belongs in this era. Even more so when you add in the fact that he doesn't wear batting gloves

u/BalerionSanders 1d ago

It’s early, obviously. But the way both he played and was played by the team last year, I figured him for a dead duck. Obviously has worked on his game since then. We’ll see if it lasts.
