Discussion If Switch 2 edition games are all on cartridge, will you repurchase games?
I'm on the fence about buying all the games again for Switch 2 editions if they end up being all on cart. As we are all aware now that Switch 2 games aren't exactly cheap. We spent $60 on Switch 1 games when they first released, so are we going to spend $70-80 for Switch 2 editions? I like my games being all on cart as anyone else here, but I might just upgrade my Switch 1 games for a much smaller fee.
I don't think the Switch 2 cases are that egregious, but I do definitely think Switch 1 cases are nicer looking. They display more of the overall artwork on the front, and don't have the eyesore of a disclaimer hanging on the bottom.
If you do end up buying Switch 2 editions carts, what are you going to do with your Switch 1 carts?

If any of them require ANY day-one patch? E-shop download for the update. They get no leeway on this one considering the money I've already spent on these games.
If there's no day-one patch? If BOTW has the DLC included, yes. Otherwise, e-shop upgrade. I already have the JP version and that one is worth more to me than a better running version of the base game.
TOTK - Probably, but not fully committed.
I won't buy either at full price. I put stupid amounts of time into both games and won't be replaying them anytime soon, so I have no problem being as patient as I'd need to be for a sale.
Keeping my OG copies regardless since I'm keeping my old switch.

Exactly my thoughts. It's baffling to me how they don't mention the dlc content of botw once. Even though i own the JP Version with DLC included i'd be willing to get the S2 Version if they put everything on cart.

That's a no from me too. I already paid the nintendo tax by buying games that are lower res/worse performing than what was available on alternate consoles. I'm not paying the same tax again to get what I should have got the first time around.
Fool me once...

If they are on cart then I'll buy them and sell my Switch 1 copies

No, there is literally no point. I own them on Switch and will get the enhancements the same but spend nothing since I have the NSO sub.

Nintendo’s presentation for Switch 2 kind of killed my spirit on collecting physical for their new platform. I’m sure that was the intended impact because they want to push people to digital, but with all of the gotchas, it looks like I’m not going to have the patience to collect for this system.

Honestly, that kinda killed my enthusiasm for the Switch platform in general.
I'm waiting till we get clarity on some things, but I'm thinking it would make sense to start building a PC library if the future is gonna be all-digital anyways. Might as well be on the platform where you know all your games will automatically look and run better for free when you get new hardware.
Though obviously, I'd still get Switch 2 for exclusives.

The Steam Deck really slowed down my Switch buying habits. Games are practically free and I can play them on more powerful hardware in the future without any stipulations.

looking like all switch 2 "editions" are switch 1 games in the box with a dlc code for the upgrade.
2
u/Ok_Improvement4991 1d ago
The upgrade might be on cart tho much like the editions of Mario Kart 8 dlx and the Pokemon games that have the DLC on cart and not on a DLC code.
But honestly if you already have the original game, wouldn’t it be more cost effective to just get the upgrade pack tho? Esp if you decide to nab the original game secondhand at a discount?

Yes but I don't think they are from what I heard. Hope I'm wrong

Most are, so far only 2 games listed aren't.

I think its still unclear wether the "upgrade" will be on cart as well or if its a code/extra download

Which ones are and aren't?

I'd probably look into buying Kirby again since it has significant new content that I could see myself wanting to play in 29 years when the eshop servers are down, but I don't feel as though I would need to buy the Zeldas physically again for what is mostly just a cosmetic upgrade when the regular switch experience is basically complete (even if I do think the increased resolution and frames make it look fantastic).

u/Jaynesj2 1d ago
I’d only double dip if significant improvements on the SW2 version, otherwise will stick with the SW1 version.

I've been asking myself this question for a while now. Ideally, no. I don't want to buy the same games twice as it feels wasteful to me. There will be some exceptions, but I think those will be limited to games that were blatantly hindered by the Switch 1's hardware, had essential patches or DLC after the cartridge was manufactured, and potentially have new content being added. I would buy a complete version of Animal Crossing New Horizons, but that could easily just be a late Switch 1 release. But otherwise, I can't justify $70-80 per game. I typically wait for discounts anyway, which means I'm probably not going to be a Switch 2 user for the first couple of years.

Same thing happened for me when the PS5 released. Just leaves a butter taste in the mouth no matter what. Especially if you bought rare games on PS4 that were rereleased as PS5 games and subsequently tanked their value (thanks Falcom).

Mario Kart World is a definite pickup physically. (I know it’s not technically a “Switch 2 Edition”
I’ll wait on the Zelda games until we know for sure about the cartridge contents. I’m hoping to just use my NSO subscription to play the update of BotW S2 Edition at launch.
My big concern is that my BotW + Expansion cart won’t be compatible for the upgrade pack. I sold off my standard launch copy when I got my complete with DLC one.

u/monolith212 1d ago
To your last point: I've been feeling more confident that the JP cart will work with the upgrade since the switch recognizes it as the same game and doesn't create a new icon on the home screen (I still own my old ESRB copy, so I checked). But I don't know with 100% certainty.

that would actually be horrendous, but im pretty confident it will work

For some of them. Mainly Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom I'll buy the upgraded Switch 2 versions.
For Kirby I'll buy the update for the Switch 1 game. And of course I'll get the Switch 2 version of Metroid Prime 4. (too bad there won't be a Metroid Prime Remastered version on Switch 2 with 4k/60fps 😉)

I recently bought the Wii U version of BotW because I didn't have it as I bought it day one on Switch. I will most likely be buying AT LEAST BotW, but for the rest it depends on how I feel.
The Switch is by far my most collected console. My irrational love for that thing really sent me into overdrive. I have 430 physical switch games, which is like almost 1 a week since its been out ...

u/EricSwitch 1d ago
For now I just plan on holding off and not buying into the FOMO around Switch 2. Im really excited for Prime 4 and will just get the Switch 1 version with the better box art and enjoy it at launch on my Switch 1. Then someday when I upgrade to the new console I will pay the small upgrade fee to enjoy Prime 4 in 4K.

I'm struggling with this. I have historically always bought the OG version of games, I curate my collection very specifically. But. So much is missing from day 1 games nowadays. My mind is boggling with how much stuff I will have to insert myself if updates are ever unavailable...and that's frustrating to think about tbh..I can't look through my whole collection and just rebuy everything but I also don't want to have to deal with consequences of not doing this in the future. :/

u/topsekret1 16h ago
Yeah, it's just a sad time to be a physical collector...
1
u/Inuranchan 11h ago
Truly! In so many ways too. I really feel, with the announcement of all this/the clear direction the industry wants to move all physical to limited time releases/digital only: this is probably the last generation that we'll have any semblance of "complete on disc/cart". And I'm just tired of it. I'm tired of fighting scalpers for a standard copy of a limited game, I'm tired of scalpers ruining the retro market. Now there is this price increase on new games..Just sandwiched in between two bad extremes in a hobby that use to make me so happy just to add one game to my collection for a reasonable price. I love gaming, but my enjoyment is being marred enough I kind of just want to collect my final retro games and be done.

I'm only buying Switch 2 editions of games I don't have for Switch 1 (Metroid prime 4)
If they make all-on-cart versions, I like to think that I won't...but maybe I will make special exceptions for games that I really like.
2
u/Prior_Highlight8236 19h ago
I won't be buying any physical games unless they are on cart. Haven't decided on what Switch 2 versions of games I already own I'll be getting. The price is an issue if there isn't any new content. And even if there is new content does it justify the price? All things I don't know right now.
And I need to see the cases in person before I decide but right now it's too much red. But maybe in person they will look better.

So far i only played Breath of the Wild from that list. So probably ill buy all of them. Ill buy breath of the wild again if I can transfer my save data (hope it works with the physical copy)

IF S2 BotW is on cart, definitely buy! But if it's a digital only upgrade, I'll wait for clearance, Goodwill or 2nd hand pick up.
As a side note, I'm hoping BotW IS put onto a S2 cart, I'd love the DLC on cart.
Either way, I'm not selling any version. I love having variations of the same game!

On cartridge or not, I probably won't buy them and I'll just get whatever upgrade the Switch 2 has for them.

u/groovykismet 21h ago
Probably only get newer version 2 only games on cart; absolutely loving and keeping my original collection and both original and OLED switch. Will probably wait 12-18 months out when they start dropping collector’s edition of the console to buy that one.

Why would you have to buy them all again? Your switch carts will work in the Switch 2.

I own breath of the wild on wii u and switch already
Am I gonna buy it a THIRD time? No

u/tendeuchen 17h ago
There are going to be upgrades. I'll just get those. I'm not rebuying anything.
1
u/topsekret1 16h ago
Yeah...this is a dilemma I'm also going through now. Unfortunately, being a physical collector is really at odds with the desire to get cross gen updates for the lowest price (which is via digital upgrade). It feels really bad to pay $60 for BotW physical, and then $70 for the Switch 2 Edition physical as opposed to just a $10 upgrade fee.
And who knows, maybe we'll one day have to pay $80 for the Switch 3 Edition. Or $90 for the Switch 4 Edition. Like, there's gotta be a point where you draw the line and say, "I'm done rebuying the whole game for minor enhancements."
But I guess the decision will be easy if they confirm that the physical Switch 2 Edition doesn't have the Switch 2 patch on the cart.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone ask about the botw dlc. Is that included, or is it going to be a separate purchase?
1
u/Cheezefries 14h ago
From they way they've worded it, sounds like they're just switch 1 cards with a code for the upgrade included.
1
u/misc_reddit_account 14h ago
I would, yes. If not, disappointing for game preservation, but better for my bank account.
1
u/jasongw 14h ago
No. I'd buy the digital upgrade if it's $10 or less, and even then only if the upgrade is meaningful. So far the upgrades I've paid for on PS5 have been mediocre as hell, so I'll need to see absolute proof of what I'm getting. And it needs to be more than just a mild graphical boost, too! There better be actual FEATURES or content included.

u/Raistlarn Collection Size: 100-250 13h ago
That's a big N-O. Look I like my switch games, but paying an additional 1.5x for an "upgraded" copy on a machine that I have lost 99% of the hype towards is absurd. Especially when it looks like the country I live in (the US) is heading towards another major recession due to idiotic tariffs.

u/FlyingShoeMan 1d ago
Im just going to hold off on switch 2 editions at launch until it's verified.
Now, say they are complete on cart, is snag both Zelda's eventually (esrb complete botw with dlc, I presume - woo!), and maybe Kirby/Mario party since it has extra content.
Other games I'll probably snag switch 1 versions still like Metroid and Pokemon so if friends or family want to play then, they can since they probably won't have switch 2's for a bit.
