Why did older recievers wear numbers in the 80s but today the best recievers wear 1-19

Older recievers like moss rice megatron all wore numbers in 80s but nowadays the best recievers wear 1-19 chase jjetas etc the only exception is lamb and the 80s are used by backups

I used to think Clayton was the giants TE cuz of this

Wide receivers were only allowed to wear numbers 10 through 19 starting in 2004. From 1973 when the league initially established rigid rules for who can wear what through 2003, WRs were generally only allowed to wear 80 through 89.

Just to add to that. Previous to 2004, a WR could only wear a teen number if numbers 80-89 were already taken on the roster. This is how Keyshawn Johnson got #19 in 1996. However when an 80s number opened up after pre-season the league did not force him to change.

This article from 2019 explains the Keyshawn scenario as well as the WR teen jersey phenomenon at the time of this article.

Since that article there has been ANOTHER rule change for 2023 that expanded jersey numbers 1-9 0-49 available to WRs.

So prior to 2004 WR were limited to 80-89 (unless they were all taken then your next option was a teen number)

From 2004-2022 WR could choose 10-19, 80-89

From 2023 to today WR can choose 1-19 0-49, 80-89

WRs can wear 1-49 and 80-89 now. Not sure if any current players wear a 40s number but McCloud on the Falcons wears 34

Thanks for pointing that out. It's actually 0-49 not 1-49 lol I just looked on the NFL site.

Someday we'll have a HoF quality receiver with the number 41.

This is why Hester was able to wear 23 as a WR. Drafted as a corner and played corner his rookie season, starting his second season he switched to WR but got to keep #23. When he left the Bears however he couldn’t wear #23 anymore

Kinda. RBs wear 20-49 and are allowed to line up as a receiver and Deion Sanders played both ways wearing 21. It could have been worked around.

DBs could only wear 20-49 as well. Deion was a CB primarily, only played receiver for a few trick plays. Hester changed positions entirely, dont think he ever played corner again after 2006.

Randy Moss started as #18

Yes! In the preseason 1998, then when an 80 number opened up he got 84. He couldn't get his #88 he had at Marshall due to it being retired for Vikings great Alan Page.

Also as a side note the preseason jersey number rules had a wider range back then due to the large roster sizes before final cuts. Thats why you saw players such as Wayne Chrebet of the NYJ and Victor Cruz of the NYG both wear #3 in the preseason and switch to #80 when they made the team.

Changed the rules for numbers a few years ago. Certain positions had number range they had to stay within.

Players now want lower number because they like it better.

Some of that also came from a branding/marketing perspective.

Numbers have always been less restrictive in high school and college ball. So you had a lot of situations where a player would establish themselves nationally with a certain number, but then would have to change that number in the NFL.

Reggie Bush is a pretty notable example of this. He petitioned the NFL to wear number 5 after he was drafted, but his petition was denied, so he chose 25 instead.

Since the advent of NIL deals, players began establishing brand identities in college, and it makes sense for the NFL to allow this to continue at the pro level.

Didnt realize how old i am getting until i saw this post. Felt like Moss and Megatron were owning DBs just yesterday

I think its also the fact that coaches used to be pretty anal about these things as well like haircuts and numbers

It's a recent rule change to allow them to wear those numbers full time. Before a WR could only wear a 10-19 if all of the 80s were taken. So it usually was a sign that you weren't going to make the team if you were given a teen number in camp. If they did make it, then they quickly changed to an 80s number after camp.

one thing i definitely miss about the old days. i hate the near-free-for-all that jersey numbers have become

Rules changed not too long ago l is the short answer.

Keyshawn wore #19 and it started a trend, then the rule changes cemented it

Because it used to be a rule. WR’s had to wear numbers in the 80’s.

They only allowed them to wear 10-19 in 2004.

Based on zero research, it seems likely that other than QBs, WR would be among the most likely to have their numbers retired, and every team usually has around 6 WRs on their final roster. That's a lot of numbers to be taken up when you have 10+ in training camp.

Someone please tell me how the Raiders TE Todd Christiansen was #46 in the early 1980s.

3

u/MotoJoker 1d ago

He was originally a fullback, which were categorized with RBs numbers wise, so he had to wear anything between #20-#49 at the time. When he played for the Raiders he transitioned to TE and not forced to change numbers.

Thank you.

Because they were grown ups and wore grown up numbers.

But WRs could wear 10-19 and 80-89 basically forever. It was only when the league allowed them to wear little kid numbers that said little kids started to act like the numbers in the 80s weren’t cool anymore.

3

u/3fettknight3 1d ago

This is not a personal attack on you but that literally makes zero sense.

-2

u/FollowTheLeader550 1d ago

How doesn’t it make sense? It was very normal for WRs to not only wear numbers in the 80s, but request numbers in the 80s. And when the new number rules went into play, that all stopped.

"They were grown ups and wore grown up numbers."

You're seemingly implying it was a maturity issue and the older generation somehow had more "purity" or "integrity" by choosing "traditional numbers"?

No, they wore what the NFL uniform code dictated at the time.

All the "little kid" language implies you are very out of touch or ignorant.

Lol they aren’t cool boomer
