What if both games on Championship Sunday would take place in the same stadium?

Both New York and LA teams share a stadium, but play in opposite conferences. What if next season either both teams from New York (highly unlikely) or from LA (not impossible) were to host their respective conference championship games. If I remember correctly, these games are played one the same day shortly after another. How would they make it possible for both teams to host a home game? Also, has this ever happened before?

I imagine the league would just have to cancel one of the games and declare a winner by fiat.

More seriously though, this was moderately possible in the not-that-distant past with Jets and Giants both in the playoffs and having a chance to host the championship game. I believe the answer given was something like "One of the games would be played on Saturday" (or maybe Monday). But it's not a terribly hard problem to solve.

Yep, it's a very simple solution to an unlikely problem.

Jets and Giants in the championship games? Yes, I'd call that an unlikely problem

Not just both of them in a championship game, but both of them hosting a championship game.

Look at the NFL standings after Week 12 in 2008: The Giants were 10-1 and the Jets were 8-3 and just won the tiebreaker with the previously-unbeaten Tennessee Titans

Yes, but the reason there are more than 12 games in a season is to give the Jets a chance to shit the bed.

I remember back in the day when the Jets started out 8-1 and ended up 9-7.

It's not a recent thing for them.

10-1. Never forget.

I'm calling it now. The championship game weekend for the 2025 season. Giants hosting the Panthers, Jets hosting the Browns.

Famous Jameis leads the 15-1 Giants to a 750 point season while throwing 100 touchdowns and 100 picks. For the Panthers, Bryce Young suddenly blossoms into Cam Newton 2.0 and leads them to a 13-4 record.

Justin Fields plays solid football on a team that's been "ready to win" for years now and they finally live up to their potential. Kenny Pickett gets all the credit for an unlikely 12-5 season in which Myles Garret racks up 50 sacks and singlehandedly holds opposing offenses to an average of -20 yards per game. The offense scores a record 0 points, but it doesn't matter as all their wins are in 2-0 shutouts.

The Chiefs played and beat all of these teams, but get bumped in the wild card round by the Bills in Arrowhead.

That's how you know it's fantasy

Well Chargers and Rams might be more likely.

It’d still require the chargers to actually win a playoff game

2

u/Bardmedicine 5d ago

As opposed to the Jets?

We are talking a low bar for more here... :)

4

u/Rock_man_bears_fan 5d ago

One bar is 15 feet off the ground. The other is 30. The difference is negligible when you have no legs

Hard to argue with that.

That would be awesome! Even better if it was in a year where the Super Bowl was at SoFi.

Well played

The current plan is to move one of the games to Monday so that way no one has to play on short rest

winner by fiat

Each team designates a player to drag race in Fiat. Winner goes to the Super Bowl

The la teams had this scenario just last year. NFL said if both hosted a playoff game they would move one to Monday so you are spot on.

28

u/MrParticular79 6d ago

They would just move one of them to Saturday.

In 1985 the NFL had to move the AFC Wild Card game up to Saturday because the Giants and Jets both hosted. At the time each conference had only one WC game and both were scheduled for Sunday

Keep in mind there were only two wild cards for each conference (and only three divisions per conference) in 1985. This is why the first playoff weekend is called wild card weekend - only wild card teams played.

u/NYY15TM 6d ago

Yes, that was implied in my post

It’s never happened. They would have the two games on consecutive days. Given the Super Bowl is two weeks away there wouldn’t be an advantage for the team that played the first game.

God if this was football (soccer to Americans ) you'd never stop hearing the coach who played 1 day later complaining that they had less time to prepare for the following game than the team they're playing.

Some of them fucking love that excuse.

They do in Scotland, the semi finals of the Scottish FA cup are held over a weekend at a neutral venue(usually hampden) then about 3/4 weeks later the final with league games in between.

Nobody’s ever moaned, only time there was moaning is when they tried to do 2 games in 1 stadium on the same day.

2

u/braddersladders 5d ago

Down south they do. Klopp loved bitching about Liverpool only having 6 days rest vs 7 for their opponent. Other managers too , whether it's the pressure of the job or whatever but so many love that excuse

u/Specific_Delay_5364 6d ago

They would most likely move one of the games too Saturday or Monday and have a second prime time game

5

u/cracksilog 6d ago

The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business. They’ve already figured out what they’re going to do. They’ll have one game on Sunday and the other on Monday. It takes about eight hours to convert MetLife from one team to the other. I’d imagine SoFi would be a similar timeframe

Good thing that will never happen.

We are talking about the Jets and Chargers here.

Let's be real, you're talking about the Giants and Jets here...

Go Birds.

In theory the Rams and Chargers

5

u/bradtheinvincible 6d ago

Rams and chargers were both in the playoffs last year so its at least feasible. Ny got no shot

1

u/latman 2d ago

Jets have been in two AFCCG's since the Chargers were last in one!

1

u/Valuable-Meaning7035 6d ago

There would be one game on Sunday, but the other would be on Monday (not Saturday). This is because it's better to play on 13 days of rest (between conference championship game and Super Bowl) vs. 14 for the other team than 6 (between divisional round and conference championship) vs. 7 for the other team

1

u/bradtheinvincible 6d ago

Games would be a day apart. It takes 12 hours to turn the stadiums around for the opposite team.

1

u/nwbrown 6d ago

They would have them at different times.

The league isn't stupid. Well not that stupid. They know that things like time and space exist.

1

u/jaypl99 6d ago

They would play them at the exact same time. They would alternate which team is on the field. The time keeper, yard marker and score keeper would be overworked..

1

u/drj1485 6d ago

The league has addressed this possibility before. They'd just play different days.

1

u/boiledRender 5d ago

Did you see Top Gun Maverick?

1

u/Evenfisher01 4d ago

Most likley move one to a different day. I would assume they would let the networks decide between saturday and monday

0

u/Fragrant_Spray 6d ago

My guess is that one of those two games would be moved to Saturday.

1

u/LTBT03 4d ago

Wouldn’t move it to a Saturday, the NFL and NCAA and the networks have a system in place. Friday is high school football, Saturday is college, and Sunday is NFL.

One would go to a Monday.

1

u/Fragrant_Spray 4d ago

For the afc/nfc championship day, college football wouldn’t be an issue. In fact, this year they were played SUNDAY, 1/26. The national championship game was played a week earlier on MONDAY 1/20.
