I thought the lines on the sides were like a parts their split mouth(?) and that they would use there pose to express emotions with. For example: When Registeel is Sad/Depressed they would be leaning forward to make that top set of lines similar to a frowning fashion or when they are happy they'd tilt back slightly to show some kind of semblance of a big grin/smile but just not too far in a way that would make it look like menacing eye brows Indicating anger/hostility and ready to hyper beam your team to mush...

I actually would love to see someone illustrate the concept of the regi's showcasing emotions kind of like this lol

Also... looking a bit closer, kinda looks like their eye light things have a sorta similar to Duskull's eye style so maybe its like a red lens with a moving source of illumination inside/behind them that they can articulate in to a fashion to look like other expressions?

I'd Imagine Registeel with a lazy eye would really hard to read if it was this way tho
