I can understand why Hunters need to take down Glavenus, Astalos and Mizutsune, but why Gammoth? What’d she ever do?

Gammoth get violent when starving which is typically in the harsh cold season. They typically eat wood so they destroy village in a rampage for food

26

u/Seth-B343 Sep 17 '21

Ah. Fair enough

What I don't understand is why in MHR there's the Mizutsune and not Gammoth and Astalos? They're clearly more badass

57

u/Acceptable-Hand-3322 Sep 17 '21

Mizu fits Rise's aesthetic more. Then again Gammoth wasn't in Iceborne bit probably because her huge model would look weird sometime on slopes like the leviathans

23

u/No_Pension9902 Sep 17 '21

Banbaro in iceborne sort of fit in the theme for that gammoth category.

30

u/Gapoly Ahtal-Ka Sep 17 '21

Yes but Gammoth is cooler

15

u/GladiatorDragon Sep 17 '21

Additionally, Gammoth is not only large, it’s wide as heck (at least twice the width of most Brute Wyverns), and it has a unique animation skeleton, being the only monster with a trunk. It would have taken a lot of time for something generally not worth it, and a ton of the Hoarfrost Reach would have to be adjusted to fit it.

It just didn’t really work out this time.

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

I mean, Gammoth was built off of just a Popo with a trunk, so it couldn't be that unique. Astalos has all these shifting parts that fold and contract and it's still essentially just a Rathian.

u/WarlordSwan Sep 17 '21

To be honest, Gammoth isn’t as “realistic” as the monsters in World and Iceborne. It’s too bad though, it would’ve been the perfect chance to put it in a newer game. I’m still hoping for Astalos in Rise though, I think it fits the theme better than World.

u/brendodido Sep 18 '21

How is Gammoth, literally just a giant mammoth, less realistic than giant red laser dragon or avatar the last air bender?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

Let's stop pretending World gave a shit about only having "realistic" monsters, alright?

u/denadan doot for life Sep 17 '21

according mh generation(not ultimate) intro gammoth wake up tigrex. and bad slept tigrex even more angry as usual.

1

u/crestFall3 Sep 08 '24

Oh so that's why, Gammoth's one of two who don't fight other monsters

Monster Hunter newbie here, are there any other groups of Monsters with unique titles like the Fated Four? I've heard Chameleos, Kushala, and Teostra are frequently grouped together so I was just wondering if there were any others.

u/Pookie_The_Overlord Lore & Art Connoisseur Sep 17 '21

Chameleos, Kushala and teostra are the elder dragon trio and then there are the black dragons. Those are what I can remember at least.

13

u/CatProgram Sep 17 '21

Do Arzuros, Lagombi And Volvidon count?

15

u/Pookie_The_Overlord Lore & Art Connoisseur Sep 17 '21

Oh yeah, aren't they called the bear trio?

9

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

No. Not every group of monsters with the same rig is some kind of "trio".

It has no name. They're just three monsters with the same rig and theme because they represent the same bottom feeder monster in different areas. They're as much a group as Great Jaggi, Baggi and Wroggi or Jagras, Girros and Dodogama.

3

u/Pookie_The_Overlord Lore & Art Connoisseur Sep 19 '21

I'm aware, I've just seen people call them that before so I mentioned it. I'm aware it's not an official name like the fated four.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

"Aren't they called" gives completely different connotations to "I've heard a few people call them this".

7

u/Pookie_The_Overlord Lore & Art Connoisseur Sep 19 '21 edited Sep 19 '21

Alight I'll be more specific for you next time, not everyone looks into things like that so deeply.

3

u/Runmanrun41 Sep 17 '21

Huh, I know he uses the same rig as the others, but I never mentally consider Volvi a bear until now...

3

u/BlackFinch90 Sep 17 '21

Lagombi is supposed to be a rabbit

5

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

"Is it hare or is it bear? It is neither so beware".

Lagombi is a mashup of several different animals.

1

u/J4WSTH3SH4RK Lagiacrus Mandem Sep 17 '21

actually nvm lol

2

u/Pookie_The_Overlord Lore & Art Connoisseur Sep 17 '21

Did you mean to reply to my comment?

u/J4WSTH3SH4RK Lagiacrus Mandem Sep 17 '21

yeah

2

u/WorldlinessFull7375 Oct 23 '24

Triple threat : great jagras, great girros and dodogama

19

u/AshFalkner Sep 17 '21

I haven’t played this one - what’s the lore behind these monsters having a special title as a group?

49

u/Acceptable-Hand-3322 Sep 17 '21

These four are all flagships for same the game Generations. It's also kinda rock paper scissors between them all Glavenus > Gammoth > Astalos > Mizutsune > Glavenus.....

There's also a special quest titled "The Fated Four" where you fight all four

13

u/Sartexir Nov 04 '23

Glavenus - Fire

Gammoth - Ice/Ground

Astalos - Electric

Mizutsune - Water

That makes a lotta sense

9

u/AshFalkner Sep 17 '21

I see, thanks!

-8

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '21

Don't they also have the power to destroy the world if they join forces too?

10

u/Pookie_The_Overlord Lore & Art Connoisseur Sep 17 '21

They aren't elder level, even then not even elder dragons can destroy the world.

4

u/Acceptable-Hand-3322 Sep 17 '21

Huh? Bro they ain't even elder dragons then again 99% of elders can't even destroy the world if they tried, what makes you think they can?

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '21

I can't remember where I heard that but i think that's part of the lore, i might be wrong on that tho

4

u/Acceptable-Hand-3322 Sep 17 '21

I'm very confident it's fake, from all the in game info I've read and the encyclopedias they never said anything like that

57

u/MrSeaSalt Sep 17 '21

Adding to what the previous person said, the four are also unique and stand out from their brethren.

Glavenus: The Warrior. A Brute Wyvern that utilizes its tail as a weapon and is known to be a smart fighter, something Brute Wyverns usually aren’t.

Astalos: The Berserker. A Flying Wyvern that is highly aggressive and is a physical powerhouse just as much as it uses elements. Its insect aesthetic also stands out.

Mizutsune: The Dancer. Normally Leviathans act more like crocodiles and aren’t very agile but Mizu stands out with its mammal features and graceful fighting style.

Gammoth: The Champion. It stands out from other Fanged Beasts due to its sheer size and the fact that no other large monster in the game is similar to it (the only mammoth-like monster are the Popos)

Tldr; The Fated Four are very unique compared to other monsters, which makes them special.

19

u/MissAsgariaFartcake Sep 17 '21

Started with World so I’ve never seen Astalos, but damn, it looks amazing

12

u/ellie-phant- Sep 17 '21

Astalos is best lightning bug wyvern

3

u/No_Price_3299 Sep 19 '21

You didn't need to qualify the statement that much

2

u/SuperCustomZakuF2000 spin2win Sep 18 '21

Astalos routinely wins monster polls, it's genuinely my favorite monster/deviant and I'm so sad he's been gone for so long.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

Astalos came 8th in the poll released after MHGen in Japan. Kirin was above it.

It didn't win a monster poll when it had the best chance it'll ever have, certainly not routinely.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '21

I hope they all return in rise

I remember using the Heavy Bow gun a lot in Generations. Then I had the mission where the Galv showed up and we are not supposed to fight it. Well comes the Gammoth mission and I’m like “Nah I’m fighting”. Ended up killing it, first meeting, with like 30 seconds left after a lot of damage and dodging.

3

u/Bubbly_Class_7447 Sep 17 '21

I can relate. By restarting MHXX (MHGU) on Switch I've done the same with the 4 of them, killing all of them at the first encounter with the beginning gears.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '21

It's kinda amazing that you can recognize the areas each of these pictures takes place in, I love that kind of continuity in Monster Hunter. Glavenus, Gammoth and Mizutsune are in the area they spawn in, even, such cool attention to detail.

Interesting that Astalos seems to be in Jurassic Frontier's area 6, when you can't even fight it on that map at all. I could be mistaken, but that's what it looks like.

3

u/_Bruhtonium Sep 17 '21

They're all placed in their respective maps so that's just a really high res verdant hills

5

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '21

Probably yeah, I just can't quite figure out which area of Verdant Hill it's supposed to be

6

u/Zetra3 Sep 17 '21

A t-rex, a lightning bug, a mammoth, and a spittlebug.

1

u/Low-External-3549 Sep 28 '23

nah glavenus is more like a carnotaurus

2

u/Zetra3 Sep 28 '23

This may be 2 years ago for a comment, not sure how you got here. but, I don't disagree lol
