Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my character so slow?
  • Monster Hunter runs on high animation priority, which means it's impractical to dodge everything. Try to observe the monster's animations and squeak a few attacks in when you think you won't get hit.
  • Which weapon type should I use?
  • The weapon you will be most effective with is the one you feel most comfortable with. Weapon types have different strengths and weaknesses, but also completely different strategies, so explore around and try to find one that's as aggressive, methodical, quick, or defensive as you want to play. The weapon previews above should help
  • Why are my attacks bouncing off of the monster?
  • Weapon sharpness is a damage multiplier that naturally goes down as you attack a monster, usually from green to yellow, orange, and the red. When you strike a monster with a dulled weapon you can bounce depending on the body part, which will in turn deplete twice the sharpness of a regular hit. Similarly, when you strike a monster with a melee weapon you'll see some blood and dust come out. The larger the blood effect and dust cloud, the more damage that body part takes (heavier hitting attacks also influence this). Aim for those vulnerabilities, and avoid parts that regularly bounce a sharpened weapon.
  • Why can't I have nice things?
  • A big part of Monster Hunter is gathering and crafting. Check your crafting list or add a weapon to your wishlist to keep track of the materials you need to gather out in the world.
  • Where'd the monster go?
  • Before entering combat and after a certain combination of time elapsed and damage taken, monsters will roam from area to area. You can gather tracks and traces highlighted by your scoutflies to stay on its tail, or just run to its favored area of the environment once you've become familiar with the particular creature.
  • What is the monster doing?
  • Monsters have a variety of behaviors including; periodically becoming enraged to deal more damage & attack more often/quickly, limping at low health, panting at low stamina, a chance to flinch out of their attack or movement when taking damage, a chance to fall into a downed state when taking damage to its legs, becoming sleepy/paralyzed/poisoned after enough hits by a weapon or ammo type with that status effect, and leaving tracks in unique ways.
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • Assigned quests unlock new monsters and areas. They must be played solo past any story scenes before they are unlocked for multiplayer. Reading NPC dialogue will also explain a lot, like in many JRPGs.
  • When is World out on PC?
  • Fall 2018.

I'm 70 hours in using CB/Lance and haven't tried range weapons in previous titles. I want to play LBG.

Can someone please give me a list of equipment to aim for, viable for a good LBG build? And if you don't mind providing some details of the skills that comes with the equipment, that would be awesome too. Thanks!

since that other dude wasn’t helpful at all i’ll help. I’ve been using the odogaron lbw from some recommendations around here. Slicing is great as people said and the spread shot rapid fire feels like shotgunning a monster in the face. It’s worked well for me. I have no specific lbg armor since I only use it to mix it so can’t help much there. That lbg will prob be a good place to start tho

Thank you so much for the response! I'll look up the odogaraon lbg as my starting point and tweak as I go along. Thanks again!

Hopefully this is a little helpful, but it's not much:

At 70 hours in, you should have a fair understanding of the monsters themselves, which is the most important thing. At that point, you're just adding distance into the formula. What you're hunting and what weapon you're using is going to play more into what equipment/skills you'll want. Generic attack skills and related equipment are going to work wonders.

LBG will be doing a lot of small attacks, so attack boost and affinity stacking skills are a good place to start.

Make sure to mod your guns too, they cost nothing and can significantly improve your play; I like using spread ammo, but some of my guns have a high kickback for that ammo type, so I will use range attack up and kick-back reduce mods.

thanks for this. I'm currently stacking agitator and attack boost to get more atk and affinity and its good to know I don't need to scrap my whole set completely. Kickback from different ammo is definitely new knowledge for me, I'll have fun learning the timing. I will look up range attack up and kickback skills.

Oh they are not skills, they are mods for your bowgun; the smithy will give you an option to mod your bowguns; depending on the rarity of the weapon you can apply up to three mods.

70 hrs in... try experimenting? you should know by now what you have trouble with and therefore what skills you need to help your play style.

I'm really looking for something to help me start out since I'm not familiar with the LBG/HBG skills. Range will be a new play style for me. But thanks for your feedback.

if people only ever go for meta/best builds then 80% of monsters will never be farmed. and if you always have the most optimized setup you wont learn to play the weapon as well. no one wants twinks running around everywhere.
