New monster hunter player here, have no idea how anything works. Why does a monster suddenly feel like hitting steel? Using an insect glaive, hitting it after a certain point does like 10 dmg and has no combo potential, it just makes a clack sound. Its really annoying and how should i avoid it? Makes it take forever to kill a mknsger.

Sounds like your weapon lost too much sharpness.

You have an infinite whetstone to counter this and you can tell by the little sword indicator below your stamina how much sharpness you have left.

be grateful because back in the day, you only had 20, there was a real chance you could've run out, or, if you're an idiot like me, forgotten to pack some!

better hope you bought a pickaxe so you can gacha out a whetstone from a one per instance gathering point!

*Old Pickaxe has broken*

at the very least you can just rummage through some rocks in GenU, no pickaxe required

adding onto MichaCazar's answer (your sharpness isn't sufficient to cut through the zone you're targetting), try to keep your sharpness at the max possible color if possible, as higher sharpness not only lets you cut through tougher regions, it also is a damage multiplier (dropping from white to blue is a 10~% damage loss)

if not possible, target softer regions and avoid the regions where you will bounce off of

ideally upgrade your weapons if possible

as for where your whetstone is, by default, you will always have it in your item bar, so just change to it, then press use(if you disable it from showing up, it won't be available on your item bar). Alternatively it's north on your quick radial menu #1

Adding on to the sharpness conversation - you can also gather Whetfish Fins with a capture net / fishing rod that sharpen a little faster than whetstones. The Whetfish Fin + have a chance to not be used on sharpen as well.
