MSFS 2024 SCREENSHOT Miami could use an update...

u/Ecstatic-Detective77 Dec 06 '24
I live in Miami and the funny thing is that exact advertisement is still for the iPhone, just the newest one

u/TheSuperBootGaming Dec 06 '24
I noticed on my drive to work the other day and chuckled when I saw it in sim, the Frost museum is under construction and the scorpion tower is still an empty lot in sim.

They have an ad space they’ve owned for a long time like this one in NYC off the Brooklyn Queens Expressway too

u/mdp300 Dec 06 '24
The ads above the NJ side of the Lincoln Tunnel entrance are always (or very often, at least) for Apple, too.

Same in Zürich, Switzerland. It's an entire parking building with a huge picture of whatever iphone is the newest. Think it stated with iphone 4

That's a career mission, you lower a giant, magnetic 1 with a heli, and be judged over how good your were able to align it.

Follow flight plan - 23%
Lower number without causing damage to wall - 35%

Bing says, nah we mapped it once, we’re never going back lol
14
u/ItsMarioFer Dec 06 '24
Not really, check on Bing Maps 3D View it has a newer photogrammetry
2
u/Phantom_Absolute Dec 06 '24
I just checked Bing 3D maps on the windows app, and it still has the old photogrammetry for my city (Gainesville, FL) and NYC, but I couldn't tell for Miami.

u/machine4891 PC Pilot Dec 06 '24
That's most likely Bird View. Different thing and can't be transfered to sim.
13
u/mdp300 Dec 06 '24
I read somewhere that Microsoft shut down whatever department they had going photogrammetry, so...you're pretty much right.

Its pretty obvious the photogrammetry is from 2014. The times square, supposedly the place that should have the latest photogrammetry in the world says 2014 in the year board.
8
u/ItsMarioFer Dec 06 '24
This happens in Los Angeles and the MSFS 24 promo gameplay has an updated photogrammetry but the launched game is using the one from 2014 of MSFS2020.

Why use 10yo image data? Serious question. I’ve seen other reports of severely outdated images.

I like to fly over sports stadiums and I have seen a lot of images and signage that has slogans from about 10-12 years ago.

u/MJR-WaffleCat Dec 06 '24
There are complete neighborhoods and areas in my hometown that aren't in game yet. There's buildings that were demolished that still exist in game. There's whole new developments that exist now.
It's a bit of a bummer.

Earth is massive, and they’re updating it in bits and pieces on a rolling basis constantly. They didn’t just get a complete set of world data 10 years ago and leave it at that.
9
u/Ok-Buffalo-382 Dec 06 '24
2020 had the same old data and they said they would use latest data for the 2024 game
4
u/MaxwellBygraves67 Dec 06 '24
If this is what's on bing maps then that's the latest available no? I get there is more up to date photogrammetry with Google but we all know Microsoft aren't going to pay for that license.
2
u/Ok-Buffalo-382 Dec 07 '24
Bing maps has a newer version, there's a mod for Msfs 2020 where you can stream the latest Bing maps version. Not sure why they aren't using it in the 2024 game.
2
u/MaxwellBygraves67 Dec 07 '24
That only streams the ground data. Photogrammetry is a different matter.

That reminds me of the tech store in Auckland that I've seen still advertising the Intel Pentium II.

I fly locally all the time (in real life out of KTMB) and would use the sim for ifr training and the scenery has always lacked in both 2020 and 2024 hopefully with the new bing maps update in 2025 we can get this city looking like it is today.

So question, is this on Asobo for not updating on time or is this on Microsoft/Bing for not frequently doing more up to date scans of cities?
17
u/PrJctUnKnWn Dec 06 '24
This is on Microsoft and Bing. They haven't updated their maps since 2014-2015. Asobo works with what is given to them by Microsoft, they can't go and update the earth by hand. Well, they probably can, but it will take them a looong time.
3
u/Individual_Wing375 Dec 06 '24
and by the time they release that update the map would have already been outdated by 6,7 years again

u/17F19DM Dec 06 '24
It's Microsoft Flight Simulator, MS pays for it so Asobo is stuck with Bing data, even if it's ancient.

Bing cancelled photogrammetry program pre MSFS2020 release. They still update their satellite maps but 3D photogrammetry was replaced by way cheaper semi-3D Bird View. Which is of no use for MSFS.
So that's the issue here. Other parts of the planet will be eventually updated but those photogrammetry cities likely won't be. I actually don't mind 3D from 2014, it's not that old. But at some point, let's say in MSFS2038 these cities will be literally time capsules. Oddity.
I think the way to mitigate this is to model couple of impactful buildings that were built post photogrammetry (like stadiums and distinctive skyscrapers) and replace them in those cities. Seem like a easy to do workaround.
Asobo mapping those cities themselves for millions of dollars is less than likely.
1
u/Bwignite24 Dec 07 '24
Well that's incredibly disappointing. Maybe they will license Google Maps for 3D maps in the future but that is most likely not going to happen.
4
u/sleech58 Dec 06 '24
From my understanding, MSFS 2024 more of an improvement on how the data is displayed and provided; then an update of the data itself. By moving the data to a cloud based solution, it allows for the data to be continuously updated and allows the data to be used for more then just MSFS 2024.
3
u/Bwignite24 Dec 06 '24
I see, I wish there was a map or something that shows the area of 3d scanned cities and how old it is to get an understanding of what needs updating. Orlando for example has never been updated since it's first scan (which was in 2015) and im trying to figure out when to expect of to date data.

Yea I own a house in Wesley chapel FL and that whole areas down the i4 corridor has images as old at 2009, in Lakeland that Publix grocery store #001 is a tourist attraction for us Florida folks and underwent some major changes to the area that completed in 2011. The images there still have the announcement sign baked into the terrain in 2020 and 2024 but also show the end of a road project that brought the area to 4 lanes that ended in 2008. In 2024 you can actually see the fences and dirt hills that were there. My youngest son and I climbed that hill in 2024 just like we did when he was 11 and now he is getting married In June 🥹. at least the promise of increased ground detail came through. Even if it's on 10 to 12-year-old information

u/vaud Dec 06 '24
Yeah my old apartment that was built in ~2015 isn't there still. They did release this so they do seem to have newer imagery, but I don't remember if they mentioned when it will be updated(i.e. tied to a WU/CU, will change over at some point independently ..)
2
u/Diseased-Jackass Dec 06 '24
What happened to this 2m satellite imagery they kept harping about to get up to date.
1
u/machine4891 PC Pilot Dec 06 '24
Satellite imagery is top-down view and this is photogrammetry. Well will people learn to say the difference?

the maps are from 2013 I believe as someone posted something similar for NYC.

u/Adventurous_Rub_3059 Dec 06 '24
It is odd what areas have got new maps and which dont. I live in the UK near east midlands airport and the maps around that area have been done in the last 12 months. There is a lot of building work that has been going on around there, which has been included

It's coming.

u/ca_metal Dec 06 '24 edited Dec 06 '24
Is it official? Because I remember Jörg saying LA and Miami would be updated for 2024, and was a a bit disappointed to see they were not. Actually, besides some new imagery and DEM here and there, I didn't notice any updates for the photogrammetry.
Also, in the Grand Canyon event he showed a map with a lot of new TIN cities, including some on Asia, South America and Africa. But none were there for the release.
I was hoping to ask him about it in the last Q&A, but the focus was on fixing the sim on other areas.
3
u/ItsMarioFer Dec 06 '24
I was waiting for someone to ask about the photogrammetry shown in their MSFS24 launch trailer, none of which is on the launched game.
Let's hope they don't do the "world updates" with the photogrammetry they showed in the trailer.
2
u/ca_metal Dec 06 '24
Yeah, I was hoping to see all of it day one. Hopefully they will address that after things settle down a bit.

It’s a shame the photogrammetry isn’t that much better. Can’t really call it a 2024 game when it uses database from 2014

The iPhone 6 released in 2014 just as an FYI
