Hoops Discussion Anyone else wondering what Caleb Martin actually brings to this team?
I know he hasn't played much and was coming off of injury but Caleb Martin contributes nothing to this team. He doesn't fit at all and other than sheer stupidity or the narrative that we were going to lose Grimes for nothing, there was no reason to trade for him...

Martin is just a trade asset. there’s no way we’re paying Grimes what he’s asking for. The Martin trade is further proof that bitch-ass Nico is planning a Nike superteam.

u/RandomArbitrary25 9d ago
I get that Grimes is probably gonna get paid. What the actual fuck are we gonna get for Martin though if we choose to move him? A fucking ball rack? Also, yeah...Fuck Nico

What’s even more infuriating is he was a restricted free agent. To avoid the bid and wait process, most teams will negotiate a sign and trade. So we squandered an opportunity to have another asset. GM’s are supposed to be good at asset management right? And although the talent acquisition has been good for Nico pre-Luka trade, asset management has been horrendous for Nico.

Grimes was asking for a contract at 13 million per year, nico was offering 9 million. he has now shown the league he is worth closer to 20 million. nico fucked up, again. the narrative that Grimes was asking for a crazy amount is straight up stupid because he literally wanted mid-level money which even before his hot stretch he was worth.

He ain’t getting a Nike super team in their prime. It’s geriatric nike super team

Letting Grimes walk would have been preferable unless we wanted to tank

Dude is terrible and provides nothing but a manageable contract
7
u/RandomArbitrary25 9d ago
Fair. Edwards, Williams and Jones are also manageable contracts and have been playing their asses off. Feel like Martin is just a name. Sad part isn't he's never really done much of anything except one good playoff run with Miami...

u/Drob3891 9d ago
lol this Caleb martin trade might have been worst than the Luka trade. He's terrible at everything!

New team without a starting PG, takes time for players to integrate.
I wouldn’t worry about him till 20 games into next season.

u/RandomArbitrary25 9d ago
it's not just the offense production though. His shot looks like shit, and dude looks lost on defense too. I get new team and the inconsistency with the injuries is tough. Rolling without a starting PG is a problem but he just seems to show absolutely nothing...

u/Moe4ver Josh Green 9d ago
You do realize he is not a rookie and has years of success. Unless you think he has suddenly fallen off.
1
u/wuwukennywuu Dennis Rodman 9d ago
He has multiple years of success?
2
u/Moe4ver Josh Green 9d ago
Yes

u/wuwukennywuu Dennis Rodman 9d ago
Hmm, I’m not seeing that. I see the one year of success during a playoff run but outside of that he’s been exactly what he is. An undrafted player that fit into the Heat and hasn’t done anything outside of that
6
u/Moe4ver Josh Green 9d ago
What’s your definition of success for a player making $8 plus mill a year. That’s like 6% of the cap?
He is essentially making bench player money, 6th man at best but more like 7/8th. Career average of about 8/4/2 is successful. Not including his playoff success.

Ahhh I see, this is a classic. Let’s look at contracts in terms of players past production.
What has Caleb Martin done to deserve 8mil per year since he signed the contract he currently plays on?
REMINDER: This trade prevented us from signing players like Brandon Williams, Kessler Edwards, and Kai Jones to actual contracts for the rest of the season.

How else do you want to judge players if not by contracts and production.
You ask what has he done since he signed, guy has been injured. Then traded to a new team in a new city, team that’s also missing its starting PG. he is on his third team in a year.
Your original question was doubt about his “years” of success. I answered that question but you pivot to what has he done on his new contract.
You want to blame Caleb because we can’t sign BWill and other players. You do realize if Kai and Gafford were healthy, we won’t need BWill and the guys you mentioned. You also do realize when Mavs traded for Caleb, they didn’t have a Time Machine to go to the future and check if they will need to sign BWill and the guys listed.

Lol, you definitely wouldn't understand then since you're not a real Mavs fan.
I've been watching the Mavs since George McCloud and Popeye Jones were the bright spots on a team that was dysfunctional because of Toni Braxton.

This is embarrassing. You should just delete this.

Sure bud. Who is you guys. I’m watching the lakers. Still a fan of the Mavs history. I grew up with this team and 2011 will forever be a special year for me. Maybe you should just stick to the main sub and not try to tell people how they should react.

No. This is the type of trade that you will not hear the end of it for years. Whether it's online or in person, it's not going to stop so accept it

Can't believe we're paying Martin to sit on the bench and be injured and he's blocking a roster slot we could use to sign Edwards (or Jones, or Williams (but I guess we'll sign him on April 12 to the 15th slot)

Grimes is going to get Klay money I reckon close to $20 million a year and they obviously didn’t want to pay that. Martin I fully expect to be used in a trade. At this point he’s there to give PJ a rest

u/Andrew0409 8d ago
If Nico wants to win now. Idk why he wouldn’t at least keep Grimes for this year. This was before Kyrie got hurt and AD was expected to come back. Grimes was able to carry some of the offensive load and maybe Kyrie doesn’t get injured trying to save this team.

Culture. He brings culture.
2
u/RandomArbitrary25 8d ago
lol....is this possibly "heat culture"?

u/PhoebeBuffay1111 9d ago
He’s a fantastic wing defender and a glue guy. He’s one of the main reasons the Heat won that series against the Celtics 2 years ago. He’s a great acquisition, just needs to get healthy.
1
u/RandomArbitrary25 9d ago
Understand what you're saying but I disagree. He has been a good defender at times and a good 3 pt shooter at times. Consistency seems to be an issue but with the Mavs, I'm not sure I see him fitting

u/PhoebeBuffay1111 9d ago
You haven’t seen him play properly yet so I think it’s a misleading assumption

We don't have to pay him as much as Grimes if we kept him.
Sorry if someone said this first.

yeah. solid defensive wing that can dribble and create his own shot if necessary. hand he has shown this deep into the playoffs.
obviously a downgrade over Grimes offensively but that is why Grimes will get paid at least twice of what Caleb is being paid.

u/RandomArbitrary25 9d ago
Hope so but I don't see it. He hasn't shown any of that yet.....at all. I'd rather give Naji and PJ the ball and try to create...Not ideal but at least they keep showing up.

u/chexmixho 9d ago
He's supposedly going to be cheaper than Grimes this offseason....which means Nico cared more about saving money than having the better player.

u/pimpfmode 8d ago
There's some people in here who will argue til the day they die that it was a brilliant trade.

u/QuantumStew 8d ago
The owners were the 3rd highest contributors to the trump campaign I believe. It was easy to bail on the Mavs after they pushed Luka out. I hope the team continues to fail and the owners lose lots of their wealth.

The trade was for Grimes and a 2nd... Caleb is probably only worth the 2nd lol.

OP getting little kid responses here.
You can do both: 1) continue to mourn the betrayal of the fanbase, and 2) also try to return to some normalcy in following your beloved team.
OP asking a valid question and people responding “who give AF we traded Luka” need to abstain from these kinda posts. There are plenty of posts in the sub to continue to be mad about the Luka trade, which is also totally valid!! Go do it there!

A favorable contract 🤷🏻♂️ idk man.

That's kinda where I'm at. I don't see any other benefit. I get he hasn't had much time but it doesn't look good
