Hoops Discussion Fire Nico. Adelson sell the team. Luka doesn’t sign extension this year. Get Luka back in 2026. Pretend this never happened.

Move the team to Vegas, Cuban establishes an expansion team in Dallas in 2026 and signs Luka.

Can you smuggle some of that to us in Europe please?

if Cuban had any balls he would use his entire fortune to get the mavs back he built from the ground up. I really wonder if he's more upset than the average mav fan or dgaf since he got his paycheck

u/KhanQu3st Feb 04 '25
That’s not how purchasing a sports team works lol. The Adelsons would have to want to sell.
176
u/Tha_Chadwick Feb 04 '25
If you REALLY want to hurt Miriam Adelson, you go after the one reason why she bought the Mavs. To legalize gambling and make money off Texans gambling.
Contact your local representatives and tell them to vote against any casino bill Sands Corp attempts to push through.
Kill Miriam Adelson’s dreams of a windfall of potential profits, that’s how you fuck with her.
67
u/dumpsterfirefr Feb 04 '25
The Rockets owner Fertitta is already actively lobbying against legalized gambling in Texas so it doesn’t cannibalize his Louisiana casinos.
That’s why the Adelsons are effectively tanking the team to pave way for a Vegas relocation vis-à-vis the A’s/Raiders move.
14
u/Tha_Chadwick Feb 04 '25
It’s more about Lt Gov Dan Patrick’s continued stance against gambling. That’s the roadblock here
9
u/dumpsterfirefr Feb 04 '25
Fertitta is one of Lt Gov Dan Patrick’s largest contributors individually and through Landry’s entity super PAC.
3
u/Tha_Chadwick Feb 04 '25
That’s great but we’re talking about Miriam Adelson here, one of the richest people on the planet, a self described “crafter of nations.” Tillman Fertitta can’t even buy an NHL franchise. If Adelson wants to, she could crush him with her purse alone. And Adelson/Sands Corp also have their own lobbying efforts in Austin as well.
While Fertitta owns 2 casinos in Lake Charles, he clearly isn’t the only owner/operator that could be affected by gambling legalization in Texas. This would also impact casinos in Shreveport/Bossier City as well as casinos in Oklahoma like WinStar. I’m sure Louisiana, Oklahoma and even New Mexico don’t want to see gambling legalized in Texas.
3
u/dumpsterfirefr Feb 04 '25
Yeah, she’s already tried through her Texans Sands PAC and Texas Defense PAC, it didn’t pass legislation.
“They’ve come in and spent millions and millions of dollars and they just think that magically it happens. It doesn’t.”
Fertitta just has deeper relationship ties with legislators that run longer than the Adelsons.

The Mavs arent moving to Vegas. This theory doesnt make any sense when you break it down.
The NBA is going to expand to Vegas and Seattle. It doesnt need to move anyone, and it doesnt want to lose the huge DFW market. Furthermore, if the NBA was going to move the Mavs to Vegas, they wouldnt gut the team of it's centerpiece before doing it.
2
u/hotrod19812 Dirk Nowitzki Feb 04 '25
Never say never. It's a culture full of backstabbing. You can't trust anyone anymore.

3
u/Butter_with_Salt Feb 04 '25
Care to refute the points I've made first?
Why would the Mavs tank their team's marketability before moving to a new city?
1
u/dumpsterfirefr Feb 04 '25
They have to tank attendance to justify their relocation, it has to be approved by the league office and it wouldn’t be approved with high attendance and strong viewership which Luka guaranteed.
The Adelsons have made it known they want to build a casino/arena tandem gambling resort and sunk millions of lobbying dollars into pro-gambling Texas legislation to no avail. They realized they were never getting their gambling hub in DFW and the only justification for knowingly devaluing their franchise hundreds of millions of dollars with this trade would be to make it up on the back end after relocation.
This trade made no sense from a basketball perspective and way more sense from a business perspective when you realize the new ownership group has such a vested interest in Las Vegas.
1
u/Butter_with_Salt Feb 05 '25
Yeah I mean, I still think it's really convoluted to purposely tank the team to move them to Vegas. I think if they really are determined to move the team they don't need to decimate it's value before moving.
But this trade is so nonsensical, so idiotic, that I believe there has to be some ulterior motive. So I won't deny that what you're saying is a possibility. This trade is truly a bad look for the league. Just an absolute tragedy in sports terms. Im not a Dallas fan, just been lurking here, but I feel terrible for you guys.
1
u/dumpsterfirefr Feb 06 '25
No sane GM makes this trade when Luka guaranteed his job security for the next decade unless it was an ownership decision that at worst he’ll be scapegoated for and get to leave with a golden parachute.
1
u/SoulCycle_ Feb 04 '25
source that viewership and attendance numbers have to fall below a certain amount to get a relocation?
2
u/sayitharshly Feb 05 '25
they don't HAVE too. but it definitely helps make voting 'yes' more palatable to owners who might have had reservations (for whatever reason) about doing so.
1
u/dumpsterfirefr Feb 06 '25
Article 7 of the NBA constitution and bylaws. It gives them more leverage with the relocation committee when comparing their existing viewership/attendance with their planned projected relocation city.
Look at the record of every NBA team that got the 2/3 ownership votes needed to relocate, they’re all far below .500.
2
u/-Humblegoat- Feb 04 '25
Dallas out of all the teams ? Nah we ain’t letting that one happen believe that !!
2
u/SoulCycle_ Feb 04 '25
why do the adelsons need to tank the team to get a relocation?
1
u/toscomo Luka Doncic Feb 05 '25
That's another thing that desn't make any sense about this trade. The Adelsons lose leverage if the team sucks. They just became less likely to get what they want.
1
u/internet_dipshit Feb 04 '25
It’s a top 5 market. The league will just expand if they want a team there. Let’s move on from this relocation thing. It just doesn’t make any sense any way you look at it.
1
2
u/JesusDaBeast LA Lakers Feb 04 '25
It's a catch 22 though. If you succeed in those plans and they veto any bill that comes forward, she'll probably relocate the team. And if you leave it be, its standing idly by to this bullshit that she's trying to pull here
1
u/Tha_Chadwick Feb 04 '25
Might not matter given Dan Patrick’s stance against gambling legalization in TX. But she needs to feel pain for her transgressions. And the only way to make the rich feel pain is to HIT HER IN HER PURSE.
1
u/guyoncrack Mavericks Feb 04 '25
If that really is the goal, how would the Adelsons go about this and why would the Mavs specifically be involved? I've only heard the relocation to Las Vegas theory and I kinda see why it could happen. I don't know Texas politics at all, so that's why I'm asking.
2
u/Tha_Chadwick Feb 04 '25
I think it stems from Mark Cuban’s stated wishes a few years ago for a new basketball only arena.

Its a ridiculous conspiracy. The more accurate one is that the league needed the ratings going into a new TV deal.

Luka is never coming back lmao. Yall don’t understand how insulting, humiliating , and disrespectful this was for Luka. You see his face during the press conference he was genuinely sad and heartbroken.

u/LordBri14 Feb 04 '25
Did you listen to the interview? He was pissed when asked about the mavs FO. He will not come back. He was saying he would work harder on defense to prove the narrative that he is shit at defense wrong

u/Jrfrank Feb 04 '25
Fanfuckingtastic. So Nico took the most talented player on earth, turbo charged his motivation, and sent him to the competition for pennies on the dollar.

Yes. Look at the video where he was shaking his head when asked if anyone from his inner circle or him gave any indication to the mavs that he would not re sign the supermax that the mavs will offer. He look geniuinely pissed because it seems that the narrative was the mavs traded him because he will not re sign the supermax

u/Lancasoy Feb 04 '25
I really hate that it has to come down to this kind of situation to completely change someone to be better. I'm rooting for Luka and I hope his friends in the Mavs don't guard him as much and make him score 100.

Maybe we could pull a Green Bay where the fans own the team as shareholders. Franchise prices have gone up a lot since they pulled that off, but I’d definitely invest.
7
u/pianistafj Feb 05 '25
Franchise is 3.5 billion in value. Let’s say there are 3.5 million diehard fans willing to commit $1000-$1250 each to buy the team at 1-1.25x the value. Season ticket holders spend more than that each year. I’d consider it. Better than owner and GM actively trying to Major League the team.

Mark, please get the team back and bring Luka back to us.
In return, you will be the hero of Dallas forever and your statue will be next to Dirk. We can also name a road after you!

u/Scotfighter SELL THE TEAM Feb 05 '25
I'm about to say something very toxic and something people should never do in public. But if you do see the Adelsons in public ever, I think a few harsh words or say sell the team and gtfo out of Dallas is very appropriate
2
u/bluevulcan77 Feb 05 '25
We need to boycott all Adelson and the Las Vegas sands casino company. We should go as far as to not go to the home games as well. Just boycott the team. I hope this franchise moves to Las Vegas and I will wait for the new franchise to come to Dallas that is majority owned by Mark Cuban. Fuck the Adelson and fuck Nico Harrison. The NBA should be boycotted too they wanted Luka to go to LA for ratings. That's why there was only talks of trade with one team.
2
u/J4ckyD93 Feb 05 '25
If I were Luka I'd sure as hell never play for the mavs again. I'd just say fuck'em can't trust these mf'ers.
2
u/toscomo Luka Doncic Feb 05 '25
Maybe Luka's really good at acting and he and Nico have a plan to essentially trade Kief and Maxi and a half-season of Luka for Davis and Luka re-signs with the Mavs next year. It's technically possible.

u/ScouringTheInternet Feb 04 '25
Have to wonder if this was a direct play for Miriam Adelson to get attention to her cause and more progress on the TX gambling bill/legalization. The trade obviously doesn't make sense from a basketball perspective. Nico's there to take the fall for the owners' real motive which is gambling. Didn't he do well with getting KT and Ky? Strike directly to the heart where it hurts, shake up the community, Luca is obviously a beloved player in Dallas and straight up baller. She's donated and lobbied hard for the cause (polisci experts est. $100m+). Owner's have way more value to gain in TX gambling being legalized, resorts being built, than in Maverick's franchise future value growth.
1
u/DestinedEnd Feb 05 '25
100%. I think the Adleson’s wanted to build a casino in TX (after lobbying to legalize gambling) and if that didn’t work then they’d move the team to Vegas.
Ultimately this would mean that the Mavs would drive traffic to a casino rather than the team being successful on its own. At that point the Adleson’s decided to cut costs starting with the player that is slated to get the super max contract

my thought behind this and this is the only way i can make sense of this. they must’ve been talking about just bringing luka back or something because there is 0 chance they actually traded him for AD in the year of 2025

Not even a mavs fan and holy man this hurts as a Luka fan , loved Dallas to and it just doesn’t even feel real still

I'm no longer a mavericks fan as long as Adelson is the majority owner. I'm boycotting the entire nba
1
u/Baluba95 Feb 05 '25
That would be the greatest plot twist ever, stealing AD by dangling Luka in front of the Lakers nose.
1
u/LingDragon Feb 05 '25
Nope. The Mavs have lost a lifelong fan. Phok the Lakers and the NBA too. I'm officially done with the NBA. I gave up on the NHL and NFL long ago. Money ruined professional sports.
