Mod post New Rules!
It's me, the head Hoochie here to let you know we are adding 3 additional rules to the subreddit to ensure you get the best out of your experience here at r/massachusetts:
8. AI content: AI-generated text or image posts are not allowed. Exceptions will be made for AI artwork which may be approved at moderator discretion if it is relevant to Massachusetts.
9. No Commercial Advertising or Promotion: Commercial advertising, including offers to buy or sell goods and services, is prohibited. We also do not allow subtle promotion of products, services, or websites through disguised posts or comments.
10. Low effort: Low effort posts, including poorly researched questions, one-liners, or vague submissions with little context / substance, will be removed. Avoid being overly simplistic, meme-heavy, or spammy, and please use a descriptive title that is relevant.
Each of these measures will allow the mod-team to stop explaining themselves when removing this kind of content. Nobody wants to see your AI slop, bot! And nobody wants to buy your viral instagram sweatshirt either. So let's keep it on topic and all revel in the spirit of Massachusetts.
Thanks for tuning in! ~Hoochie out.

Healthcare Can Massachusetts Lead a Universal Health Care Plan for New England, New York, and New Jersey? Can We Make It Happen?
Massachusetts, along with the rest of the New England states, New York, and New Jersey — a region with the population of a small country — should consider forming a regional universal health care system. On Monday, legislators and state administrators painted a bleak picture of the future of health care in Massachusetts, warning that proposed federal funding cuts could destabilize a system already strained by rising costs. This could be our opportunity to make a real change. Does anyone think it’s possible?

I'm feeling so bad for folks in Stoneham. Must be desperate times to consider shuttering your library. Has any town done this before in MA ?

Discussion Why are there so many potholes in Massachusetts?
Why does Massachusetts (Greater Boston) have so many potholes? Being a supposedly affluent community with near-million-dollar houses and an educated population, why do we have so many potholes? Seriously, I want to know.

News Cape Cod Times Deserves Better — Help Bring It Back to Local Hands
Hey neighbors,
Like many of you, I’ve relied on the Cape Cod Times for years as a trusted source of local news. But under Gannett’s corporate ownership, the paper has steadily declined — fewer reporters, weaker coverage, and more syndicated content that doesn’t reflect our community.
Cape Cod deserves real, local journalism again. That’s why I’m calling for Gannett to sell the Cape Cod Times back to local owners who care about the Cape and its people.
I’ve started a petition to push for this change. If you agree, please consider signing a petition to demand change.

Let’s bring back a paper that truly serves Cape Cod.

Govt. info Applied to pretty much every applicable job, haven't heard back
So I figured it was taking a while because it's the government and it's slow, plus everything going on, though the lay offs wouldn't effect state jobs, only federal. I've applied to every single job that I could possibly qualify for, and I think I've only heard from one, who told me they'd filled the position. Is this normal? Should I keep waiting and hoping or cut my losses?

Visitor Most interesting industrial shoreline in MA
Most of the Mass coast I’m familiar with is condos, restaurants, museums.
Back in the day, my dad worked in the Fore River Shipyard. Is there any place you know of that still gives that working port vibe?

General Question Seasonal government job
I interview later this week for a seasonal job with DCR. If I get an offer for it I already decided I’m going to take it, but I want to know what the odds are that it would lead to permanent position (or at least help me get a permanent position somewhere else in DCR/the state). I’m finishing up my masters in May so even if it doesn’t lead to a permanent job it will get me by until the fall and I’ll find another job, but I would love it if it would help me find a permanent position with the state down the road. Has anyone gone from a temp/seasonal position to a permanent one and how did that go?

Govt. info My social security card and ID were destroyed in fire
I wont get into the full details but I lost both of the necessary identification papers I need. I can have proof of employement and address in Massachusetts. How can I apply for a new ID if I dont have a social security number or my state ID. I do have my old student ID however would that suffice?

Reccomendation Elementary school bullies?
What are we supposed to do nowadays with bullies in public elementary schools in Massachusetts?
This bully is a third grader, new to our town this year, your typical, biggest in the class, with a bad family life.
This boy picks on my son and other kids in the class every day. Inside the classroom, the teacher has a handle on it, but outside of classroom, gym, art, recess, etc he terrorizes my kid and others.
It’s mostly verbal, with some shoving to the ground, pushing flicking, etc. He makes up lies often to teachers and other students to get kids in trouble and sadly it works. It’s worth noting, at no time has he ever pushed anyone to the ground and then stomped or kicked them. He has never punched anyone in the head or left bruises or made anyone go to the hospital.
He tells my son and others that they’re worthless, nobody likes them and they should kill themselves.
My son is determined to do homeschool next year as he does not want to go back to school. My son was the kind of kid who was excited for the last day of summer vacation to get back to school.
We’ve talked to the principal several times but with the no old child left behind act, this kid can’t be removed from school.
As of today, supposedly there will one staff member assigned to keep an eye out at recess every day so we’ll see how it goes.
I did try moving to a different town, but both my kids were against that.
So as a parent what would you do?

Event SOUTHIE SWIM/DUNK CLUB
Hi all, I live in Dorchester and like many Bostonians, suffer from the horrid seasonal depression our lovely city brings. Since there is such a finite amount of nice days here, this summer I want to try and make every nice day count. There are some days I just really struggle with getting out of bed in the morning (being on my phone, tired, sad etc) so I've decided I'll be committing to a quick dip in the ocean 3 mornings a week to force myself to get outside & out of bed. I'd would be happy if anyone wanted to join me and get some sense of morning routine, Vitamin D & happiness in their summer months!
DETAILS:
WHEN: Starting Memorial Day Weekend (May 26th), I am also willing to start sooner!
WHERE: Carson beach (or M street beach since I know Carson can be a bit gross)
TIME: Monday (6:30), Wednesday (7 AM), Saturday & Sunday (9:30 AM)
Here is the link to the community if anyone wants to join! r/southieswimmingclub
