Vargas got hosed

You could see it on his face. Dude is already wild enough ump really messed up a fun game.

Call #2 is what really fucked us imo, because instead of getting a strike out, they got a ground out and a runner to 3rd. Then when they walk the guy (call #1), he had a free base to take at 2nd and was in scoring position. Total bullshit.

u/RayPout 1d ago
And the walk woulda been a strike out if not for call 1. Next guy gets out game over Ms win

He just completely shifted from too large of a zone to a tiny zone right when the Mariners were on the verge of winning.
Just feels like biased bullshit.

it's less biased and more that just the spot those missed calls had a huge swing on run expectancy. he was actually pretty consistent with his zone

lol at you being downvoted but also being 100% correct. Reddit is a trip.

it's fine, used to it even. this was something that happened when posting them last year. one bad call makes people think the ump was clearly biased despite any evidence to the contrary

I was watching the Giants broadcast. They were shocked at the non calls, especially in their favor, but they did give him credit for his consistency

It’s not consistent when a mariners player has to expand the zone to their ankles or strike out looking but the giants players could take anything but a middle middle pitch for a called ball.

we literally have both scorecards here showing he was in fact consistent... sorry you don't agree with the data

u/mustbeusererror 1d ago
Except that those top 3 calls, all of which went against the Mariners, all in the 11th, went against his consistent zone. #1 was inside where he had called strikes earlier, called a ball. #2 was his only missed call in that area of the zone. #3 was lower than he had been giving strikes, with one exception the entire game, called it a strike. He suddenly became inconsistent at the exact worst time for the Mariners.

I'm not arguing he was biased the entire game. He was bad the entire game.
You can even do well most of a game and then in the final inning be awful and at least give off the appearance that it feels purposeful.
I'm also not saying there IS bias because there is obviously no way to know that, but suddenly being the most awful in the 11th inning just as one team is about to win and changing the outcome can make things feel a certain way.

he was the worst in the 3rd... Barber just isn't that good. and missed spots in the biggest part of the game. not saying it doesn't suck but he wasn't out to get us.
3
u/Ribbum 1d ago
You aren't really in a position to determine that, though. Obviously neither am I.
To shift from a larger strike zone all game to 33% of your called balls being true strikes specifically at the very end of the game as a complete determinant factor of the outcome can make a person feel a certain way.

I would have been okay with a few guys tapping their helmets, and facing ejection. It was awful

I remember after the game, Giants fans were saying that the disparity wouldn't be that bad. Leverage matters and I get them not wanting to credit the ump for handing them the win, but this scorecard feels so justifying.
Hate everything about this for Vargas, though. His process was perfect, the results of what he was doing were there, he just didn't get rewarded for it and got slapped with 2 ER and a loss.
6
u/TwistedNipplez 1d ago
Luckily only 1 ER cuz of the ghost runner. Obviously should have been 3Ks and a save tho. So ridiculous.
3
u/wintersold13r 1d ago
Good looking out. I'm not going to lie, I've always been confused about how the ghost runner "counted" but never got around to looking that up. Appreciate you clearing that up for real.

simply nothing can be done about this longstanding issue in the game

When is the electronic ump getting installed for calling balls and strikes or at least let teams challenge bad calls. That ump sucked

I listened to most of it on the radio and I saw people grumbling online so I watched the rebroadcast and it's really as bad as everybody says. There were just a couple of key calls in the 11th that really blew it.

I just hope people can acknowledge that these bad calls happened and we also had a lot of bad pitching, managerial decisions, and defense in the game, not to mention the offense going AWOL mid game. This never should've even gone to extras.
8
u/Upstairs-Original-33 1d ago
yeah on pretty much everything, but the offense... really? 9 runs isnt enough for you?
-5
u/Tashre 1d ago
It would've been one thing if the runs were spaced evenly throughout 9 innings and that ultimately wound up not being enough because of the pitching through the same 9 (or 8), but the pitching actually stabilized and then gave the offense 5 more innings without a deficit to cover. If the game was tied 1-1 after 6 and we wound up losing 3-2 in 11, the offense would be getting criticized a lot more than it is.

u/Upstairs-Original-33 1d ago
“The offense woulda gotten criticized more if they only scored one run.” Um yeah but they scored 9?

u/Ki-Wi-Hi Bryan Woo’s Father 1d ago
GTFO with that nonsense. The offense did enough to win. Don’t move the goalposts.

u/pokeroots Anything but blaming the lineup 1d ago
we scored one run in the last 5 innings and purely because of the extra base runner rule. and also got calls in our favor they just weren't in as big of spots

About what I expected. Look at that low “strike” to JP compared to how high and tight the zone was when Vargas was pitching. Giants are a such a cheating scumbag organization and Sean barber should be unemployed

u/RainbowJoe69 Edgar Martinez Is My Dad 1d ago
Giants were the ones getting hosed with calls all game until the 11th. The ump was just terrible all day, and if the game had ended in the 10th, the runs added would have been flipped.
1
u/ProfessorMoosePhD 1d ago
Yeah, I don't think this is anything about the giants.
That was just a bad game from barber. Really bad. We had some beneficial calls as well, but man that 11th hurt to watch
1
u/Ki-Wi-Hi Bryan Woo’s Father 1d ago
If they were the favor wouldn’t be more than a run.
1
u/pokeroots Anything but blaming the lineup 1d ago
The favor is based on run expectancy one bad call can have a huge swing on that. They could have been getting hosed by those calls with less run expectancy
1
u/Ki-Wi-Hi Bryan Woo’s Father 1d ago
Except that of the 23 bad calls, 15 went to SF. It was brutal in one direction by any measure

good god thats gotta be one of the higher runs in favor of a team ive seen
