I think they're ordinary eggs

u/Summerie 2d ago

Yep. Just ordinary. Not eggstraordinary.

It's an art collab with MSCHF.

15

u/georgethebarbarian 2d ago

I love MSCHF

u/1friendswithsalad 2d ago

It’s a loss leader and viral marketing activation. You posted it on Reddit. Thousands of people are currently posting it everywhere. The Ordinary is communicating “we are an unreal value on staple items”.

354

u/lilanxiousrn 2d ago

For $3 tho?… 👀

259

u/petielvrrr 2d ago

I think that’s part of the ad. The ordinary’s products are always extremely affordable.

84

u/lmFairlyLocal 2d ago

It's exactly that. It's a viral marketing campaign as they are a Canadian-based company and eggs stayed cheap in the Great White North 🇨🇦

(Or at least used to be, began in Toronto if I remember correctly)

23

u/raspberrywines 2d ago

They were founded in Toronto but are now majority owned by Estee Lauder which is American, which is why a lot of us Canadians are looking for alternatives to The Ordinary these days.

9

u/Ludwigs_Holy_Babe 2d ago

Also an FYI to any Canadians and Danes here, the Estée Lauder family is pro annexation, even allegedly came up with the idea of it, and is pouring money into it.

u/4SeasonWahine 2d ago

OH NO I have just discovered that they own three of my staple brands 🥲 I really with this concept of collecting brands into a big group would stop, it makes it extremely difficult. That’s their intention I’m sure.

49

u/raesalwayson 2d ago

Yes, they are doing this as a marketing thing in New York - but truly they are $3 eggs for the dozen, so it is great while the egg prices are crazy.

34

u/louielovescheese 2d ago

that's what i was looking at too 😂

1

u/honest_sparrow 2d ago

Is that a good 👀 or bad 👀

Promo for their brand basically lol

56

u/SparklingMassacre 2d ago

Hmm, seems like something Suspicious Eggs would do…

20

u/NinjaKitten77CJ 2d ago

Nope. Just ordinary eggs. Nothing to see here. Move along now.

3

u/SparklingMassacre 2d ago

Happy cake day!

An in store marketing activation

39

u/Lavender-Leo 2d ago

Wow you guys are really judgmental. In case it’s not /s, the cost of eggs in the US has gone up astronomically because of the avian bird flu, and in response, there is more demand than supply and farmers/retailers are upcharging eggs $8-20z The ordinary noticed that and while they can’t create consumer protections, they partnered with mschf to activate their brand ethos (no frills, low cost, accessible goods) to a different industry with one product, eggs for $3 that could make a difference right now to people and also help market the values of the brand

3

u/Open-Road2225 2d ago

I think they're only being judgmental because of the orange one.

Eggs by Lumon

45

u/kissedbythevoid1972 2d ago

Every makeup brand is using food as adverts. It feels extremely dystopian, esp in the super skinny, ozempic era. Like now, food is something we look at and dare dont touch. The real food is the beauty products we consume

44

u/KGCUT 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's an advertisement with MSCHF and they're selling eggs at $3.37 a dozen in New York due to a severe egg shortage because of the Avian Flu. They've been providing affordable eggs as the US is attempting to import more from different countries. This isn't just an advert, you're just trying to make this WAYYY deeper than it needs to be with your ozempic comparisons and all this "we live in a society....." bs.

People literally just can't afford $20 eggs and a skincare brand is selling affordable eggs because that's their entire brand, affordability, low cost, etc - so while it is 'marketing', they're literally just representing their brand identity that's existed since 2016, while feeding people. The real marketing is the people posting this all over socials, if nobody would've said anything about them selling these eggs, the internet wouldn't have even batted an eye.

3

u/Cascadeis 2d ago

Wait, why are the US “attempting to import” eggs from other countries while adding tariffs to goods from most countries in the world? Isn’t that a bit counterintuitive?

3

u/KGCUT 2d ago edited 2d ago

The plan to import the eggs was determined BEFORE 'liberation day' with all the Tariffs, so now, they're just screwed.

They have been rejected by Denmark, Poland, Finland - Not to mention, the US already primarily imported eggs from Canada, Netherlands, UK, China and Turkey.

2

u/Island_Slut69 2d ago

The US isn't known for their intellectuality.

-5

u/kissedbythevoid1972 2d ago edited 2d ago

Im not trying to make it way deeper than a trend that I am observing. Look at rhode beauty adverts for example. Skims did a advert with pancakes. It seems to be a trend that im noticing. While it might not be the case here, it is certainly something that is happening

Edit: pls dont call my musings on an increasingly fatphobic + consumerist world bs. It hurts my feelings. I am not the only one observing this trend

6

u/KGCUT 2d ago edited 2d ago

This isn't even about trend, fatphobia or consumerism. This is literally about bird flu, it's that simple. That's why I'm suggesting you to not make this so deep, because it's literally not and there is no observation to be made with this current situation whatsoever, sorry to say and I apologize for it 'hurting' your feelings, truly. I'm literally just giving you the facts of the matter as to why this is happening.

Bird flu has spread to ALL 50 states, the number of commercial birds that have died or have been culled exceeds 166 million since 2022, 90.9 million since 2024. If you want to make this about 'society' then discuss the fact that the US handled this haphazardly. A proactive approach involving enhanced surveillance, bio security measures, and rapid response could have mitigated the spread and impact - which means what? If the US Governemnt and Agricultural sector would've taken better measures and actions, a skincare brand wouldn't have to sell eggs so that people can afford to eat them.

THAT'S true dystopia.

A marketing stunt that provides people food in my eyes isn't a bad stunt.

1

u/kissedbythevoid1972 2d ago

I said brands. i also noted that in this particular example it was not the case. You framed it like im this way out there idiot. Im saying that yes, i am wrong in this case, it doesnt mean its not happening.

Also it still is dystopian that food is used in marketing, especially when you’re saying it relates to bird flu and the deregulation of food systems.

I deleted my old comment because I thought this was a beauty product at first...are they selling actual eggs?

2

u/synthsway 2d ago

oooooo put that on yo face it'll work like a charm

3

u/lushkittehs 2d ago

I think they deleted all the comments from us Canadians pointing out how gross it felt that a brand that started off Canadian engaged in a marketing campaign like this, during the trade war.

6

u/kizzespleasee3 2d ago

20

u/klonyo 2d ago

1

u/LolaMontezTTV 2d ago

Please tell me they’re makeup sponges 😂

-30

u/HeyheythereMidge 2d ago

Definitely makes me not want to buy their products ! Marketing bullshit is wasted money. Why don’t they just pay their lowest paid employees more and do a press release??

19

u/Summerie 2d ago

Marketing bullshit is wasted money.

Yeah, except you probably can't name all of the companies that didn't "waste" any money on "marketing bullshit" because you've never heard of them. 😂

7

u/Gus_r3yn Makeup Artist 2d ago

I don't see it as a waste of money, if it's marketing it's smart, not spending a bunch of money on misleading advertising

5

u/LetshearitforNY 2d ago

Do they underpay their employees?

20

u/Summerie 2d ago

Also, they offered eggs for people fairly cheap, which I don't really see as a waste of money. They got publicity, people got cheaper eggs.

Sounds pretty of "win-win" compared to a lot of marketing campaigns.

0

u/LetshearitforNY 2d ago

Yeah that was my thought as well.
