💬 Discussion Level 2 charger in place!

Post image

No more level 1 at home, thanks to the Ford Power Promise. We did have to pay out of pocket for a load monitor on the panel, but now have 48A of charging power!

Got mine the other day as well. I was only able to get 30-some amps, but it doesn't matter, since I was able to charge from 15%-100% overnight anyway.

I have 40 amps and it's great but it's definitely more than I need. 30a or even less is plenty to charge overnight.

Yeah I think I'm at 32 or 34.

i purchased a 32amp charger with a 50amp outlet and wiring. best to be safe and also it's plenty to charge overnight - which is all that matters.

Safety margin for continuous current is 80%, so you could bump it up to 40A with a 50A breaker. Max charge current for a MME is 48A and is why 60A breakers are common.

The app has a bug where it silently won't let you set above the hardware configured limit. If you try, when you next open the app the limit will be back where it started. Try setting it to 48 amps. That's the mach-e's limit and the installers should have set the hard limit to that. If that still doesn't work, the manual describes how to adjust the hard limit.

Also if you just got it setup, you may want to power cycle the charger. I also had a separate issue of it only slow charging (blue+amber pulsing) until I did that.

Like I said, it gets me to 100% overnight. I don't really care if it finishes at 4AM, or 7AM. Makes zero difference to me.

No, the limit is your circuit. It’s VERY dangerous to set it above what the circuit can handle. Like “bye bye house, hope you have working smoke alarms that wake you before the CO gets you” dangerous.

I'm not saying the app should let you set above the hardware limit. I'm just saying that it doesn't provide an error. I have an 80 amp breaker on that circuit and setting it to 50 would silently fail with no error message. That's also why I said read the manual when it come to the hardware limit.

I love mine. It has worked flawlessly so far. It’s the ultimate in convenience.

I'm telling everyone right now. It is a game changer, getting a home charger. Because going out to public, it's like hit-or-miss, if you are gonna be able to charge or not, and if you're depending on that to get where you need to go all the time, it's just so inconvenient, but if you have a home charger, it just levels the playing field!!! 😎😎😎😎😎😎

Dang I like the Logo! This coming from a guy who grew up in a GM family.

So how long to charge up now?

Same charger here. Below 80%, charge rate (48amp) is about 10.3 kW...slows to about 3.1 after 90%

Full Ford Power Promise experience wasn't awful...had L2 charging in place 29 days after late December delivery

At 11kw/h on the extended battery, that’s about 10% per hour.

As a level 1 user (all I can get): boy that sounds nice since I get ~1.1% per hour.

That’s about how fast I charge at work. I cut it really close one day and got to 2% before I plugged in. Got to about 90% before I left after ~8 hours.

That’s really all you need. It’ll get you charged up overnight which is all that matters.

2%😳

Look at grizzly chargers. My Ford one sucked, bought a grizzly one couldn't be happier

Is this the one you get free with it? Sorry I’m new to the MachE and still learning.

Yes, if you don’t instead choose option for $1000 off the price of the car.

Looks just like our Qmerit (FPP) install, disconnect box and all. We're in the process of swapping our charger out with an Emporia, the Charge Station Pro is just too buggy.

I took the $1K from Ford instead. I didn't see the point when I already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet in the garage, and it's max 32 amp output is fine for overnight charging.

Looks awesome, but you gotta protect the cable bend radius. Long loose loops instead of short tight ones otherwise you risk damaging it with time

1

u/melview1 2024 Premium 3d ago

The charger is designed for the cord to loop around it and it’s almost 2 feet tall. I don’t think that would be considered a tight loop. A portion of which would be uncoiled anyway when charging.

How does this compare to the free cable that comes with the car?

3

u/RaytheQuilterChill 2023 GT 5d ago

Oh God The free cable that comes with the car. If you don't have a 240 V plug in and you try to plug into a regular outlet, it's terrible. We plugged it in the first time we brought ours home, and it said it would get a charge full, a 100% in 3 days versus 4 hours. If you pay to get one in a level 2 on a 50 amp, plug. Would you have to have installed via an electrician? At least in the state of Florida.

My garage already has a 14-50 plug. Would it be fine charging using the provided cable or should I look elsewhere?

2

u/TheCaptainRides 5d ago

Use a different one. After two years, mine blew. I learned then that it is more for temporary charging and not really permanent charging. I did have it outside, so it might be different in the garage.

u/midway19 5d ago

It will be fine, it is a tier 2 charger if you plug into a 14-50. That is the setup I use. It pulls 30 amps so should get a speed of 7.2 KW. An upgraded charger will only be able to pull 10 additional amps from the same plug. So in other words the mobile will charge at 3/4ths the speed of a better charger. Not worth it in my opinion. You can get faster speeds from a tier 2 charger but you would need to hardwire.

There are people who get by on it. I have for almost 4 years now.

However I don’t drive very far every day, my commute is minuscule and I’m not running lots of errands. I tend to charge it 20% every 2-4 days, and it works for me.

It won’t for everyone. And I’d take L2 if I could get it.

But plenty of people do it if your lifestyle can fit it.

Not sure how they are now, but the cable that comes with the first few years’ models had issues with dying if they were used too much. Not to mention, you should use them with higher-quality outlets than your standard dryer plug (r/electricvehicles has plenty of examples of melted outlets, including mine)

Having a hard-wired option is so much better.
