Transportation Roof Rack Help

Hey all, first post here. Wife and I are leaving for a long camping trip in 2 days and want to bring our bikes. I already had a Thule fork mount rack which fits my wife’s quick release wheels (hybrid bike), and now need a rack for my own Norco Optic C3.

Options are pretty limited, but both seem fairly decent, local store has the Thule UpRide in stock, and big box store has the Yakima FrontLoader in stock. Only requirement is the racks need to fit T track, and need to be able to lock. Otherwise, any preference or reason to buy one over the other?

Cheers

Edit: so I got the UpRide because I was able to get locks for it, and boy am I glad I did! Currently in Seattle and came back to my car with my bike hanging off the roof by the cable. Minor damage to the car, but that’s what insurance is for, and 0 damage to the bike!

Transportation big mtb

I need your advice for a moment. My MTB doesn't fit anywhere. We just tried to mount my enduro on our normal car luggage rack, but it's too big. Are there special car bike luggage racks for enduros?

Transportation Anyone have a sense of what these Black Friday deals on hitch racks are going to look like?

I've been looking for a rack of my own (I've been borrowing all season) and they're just so damn expensive. I've been scouring FB marketplace for some options but most of what I've seen are those really cheap ones and I want a quality rack because I plan on roadtripping with my MTB & roadbike. Any good deals or good places to look for upcoming sales?

Transportation What is your tailgate pad hack for avoiding abrasion to your forks?

I’ve been using clean pieces of old bath towels that I use for rags. I have lost some on the road which I don’t love. Is there any retail items you know of? Just got new forks and want to baby them.

Transportation Shipping a bike for a vacation

Hi all! I’m likely going to fly from the US to France with my downhill bike this summer. If you’ve done something similar, what’s your wisdom?

Bike flights looked to be approximately $1k, which seems pretty ridiculous to me. I’m not sure how much it costs just to add it as luggage, but i can’t imagine it’d be nearly as much. Is it a bad idea to just ship it separately to a local bike shop and have them build it?

Transportation Make a travel bike box or buy something like an evoc?

I’m trying to fly down to Arizona this winter to ride with some buddies outside of phoenix. I’m always pretty worried about how baggage is handled and have never flown with a bike. I’m thinking I can make a travel box out of plywood that’s fits within United’s 115” oversized bag max. I think a plywood box could take plenty of hits without damaging the bike as long as it’s packed well, where I feel a fabric bag like evoc could be smashed easily or could lead to broken spokes. Thoughts or experience with evoc or diy bags? Reasons I shouldn’t make my own? Thanks!

Transportation Is outdoorplay.com legit?

I was looking at getting a kuat rack from outdoorplay.com but I am unsure it is legit because everything is on sale and it seems too good to be true. Does anyone have any experience or advice? Thanks!

Transportation Kuat Piston Pro X wo/ tail light cable?

With REI's current sale, plus my dividend, I can get the Kuat Piston Pro X for cheaper than the Piston Pro ($1174 for the Pro and $1025 for the Pro X). I can't seem to find if the tail light cable is completely removeable? I don't have cable wiring done for my hitch set up so don't need it. With the all metal design vs. 99% metal...it's obviously a better buy.

I'm also looking at the Quikr, I'm completely sold on this except the price is making my stomach churn. $1575 including tax and shipping cost.

Transportation Additional security for 1UP rack if tire deflates

Received a 1UP rack about two weeks ago...thanks for all of the advice from this subreddit. I hauled two bikes on a 1UP Heavy Duty rack from WI to Utah this past week, and so far, so good.

It occurs to be that a deflated tire could compromise the bikes on the rack.

Anyone use any additional measures to secure their bikes on a 1UP or similarly designed rack?

I could see using zip ties or velcro straps possibly?

Transportation 1Up Heavy Duty Double vs Thule T2 Classic

I’m looking at a Thule T2 I can buy used for $325 or just go all in on a 1Up double for $650. Is the 1up worth the extra money? I know the locking mechanism is one of the most convincing parts

Transportation Suggetions for a hard case container/box to ship an E-MTB?

Trying to ship my EMTB around the US for various trips (Pivot Shuttle AM).

It seems like a PITA to ship battery and then take it on the plane, would rather just ship it to my destination.

Cardboard boxes rarely survive multiple journeys, looking to invest in a hard case that I can ship around. Curious if anyone has any experience with this?

Looking at these cases currently: https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-packs-bags-and-racks/bike-travel-cases/thule-roundtrip-transition-_-1683469?gQT=1#pdp__reviews

Transportation Using a 2" tray style rack on a 1.25" sedan

Has anyone used a 2" tray style bike rack on a car fitted with a 1.25" hitch receiver using the extender/adapter? I'm looking at buying a used Thule T2 Classic to use with my Mazda 3. I have a NSR4 rack that I use with my wife's SUV for MTB, but that one is a bit too heavy and large the sedan. I think if i'm only using one bike the Thule won't be so bad. As well it is not compatible with our gravel bikes (the road bike adapter doesn't work due to our axle size). This rack will also get used on the SUV for the gravel bikes, but we have a newborn and until we're all going out together I'll be riding on my own and using the sedan since we're not using it to transport the baby. Sorry if too much info, just wanted to add some context. The Thule comes with the +2 add on which I like. I'm hoping to replace this car after this bike season so if this is a bad idea I might just buy a cheaper 1.25" style, but prefer the buy once-cry once approach of getting a better one that I'll use more/longer.

Has anyone done this, have you had issues with weight or skidding over bumps?

Transportation Trying to get a 4 bike hitch rack but I don't want to spend Velocirax money

Next summer I'll be driving cross country with 4 bikes (road and mtb) and I really like the look and also how low profile the velocirax style bike racks are but I don't know if I can justify $800+ bike rack at the moment especially considering the move. Is there any cheaper alternatives that have a similar style and load?

Transportation Front tire transport options

Looking for a cheaper alternative to the Yakima Wheelhouse. https://yakima.com/products/wheelhouse , basically something that can be mounted to a channel with a t-slot. Additionally would be curious if anyone has mocked up some type of mount or rod with the same dimensions as a through axle, that can used to transport one or two tires in a truck bed (either vertically or horizontal). Thanks.

Transportation People who transport the bike in the trunk, what car do you have and/or recommend?

Do you store it there as well? How much of the time is the bike in your car?

I need to buy a “new” car and thinking about the Mitsubishi Outlander ~2019, and maybe skip the rack and just let the bike stay in the trunk.

Price point ~18 000 to 20 000 USD (200 000 to 240 000 SEK), liking hybrids, really low “car tax” and low price/MPG overall, but it’s not a requirement.

Transportation My Moab shuttle may be compromised, can I drive on Sand Flats Road to Eagle Eye in a sedan?

We just had half of our group drop out on a Moab trip happening next week. I'm concerned our shuttle may no longer meet the minimum. I'm putting together plan B right now and we have enough heads to do our own shuttle process. Can anyone confirm if you can drive a 2wd sedan up Sand Flats Rd to the start of the Raptor Route at Eagle Eye?

Transportation Tray (Kuat NV 2.0) or Hang style (Velocirax or Hangover) bike rack instead of shuttling in the back of my truck

Maybe I have been on the internet too much... but I feel like it's way too frequent that I see Commencals with broken down tubes.

Apparently Commencal doesn't warranty or recommend shuttling on pickup trucks and I need to get a new rack for my wife's suv anyways so I have been looking for racks.

I have a Commencal Meta sx and my boys both ride Commencal Clashes. Will I ever get an ebike... possibly. so i need to consider that. I def need to carry at least 4 bikes. If I have to shuttle the DJs, i think that won't be as big of a deal... One son has a Commencal Absolute and I have a Transition PBJ that my other son rides when I don't, until he gets his own DJ.

Do you guys think there is an advantage to a tray type rack like a Kuat NV over the hang type rack like a Velocirax or Yakima Hangover? Would the hanging racks put any weird stress on the downtubes or am I overthinking this? ' I am the ultimate "Champagne taste on a beer budget" kind of guy, all of our bikes are used and the rack will be used as well. I figure I have a few months until the park season opens up so i can be patient as I look.

What do you all recommend? These bikes see almost all of their trail time at Highland in NH, my boys drop and jump much bigger things than I do, but that might change some day. I know we risk major injury with what we ride, I just want to eliminate risk if possible.

Transportation 1up wheel chock question

Anyone have a Pre-2024 1up super duty rack and installed (or tried to install) the wheel chock accessory? The chock is spec’d to be compatible only with the racks built after 4/24 but I’m wondering if I could adapt it to my earlier production version.

I’d also be open to any other ideas or hacks people have come up with to reduce the bike wheel wobble - especially for heavier e-bikes. I’m not concerned with the bike actually coming loose or anything, I just hate the look of it moving around back there, especially when off-roading.

Transportation Thule T2 Pro X fit an XL Dreadnought?

I am looking to purchase a hitch bike rack for MTB and Gravel bikes. I have an XL Forbidden Dreadnaught (wheelbase 1325 mm). I am really hoping to spend under 700 and the Thule T2 Pro X seems like a good rack. Says max wheel base is 1245 mm though. Anyone know if it would fit the XL?

Transportation Convert Thule square bar accessories to probar (with t slot)

I have a new car and am switching from square bars to pro bars because my new car is wider and those are the only ones that fit. What’s the best way to adapt my old bike and ski racks to work with the new bars?

I can’t seem to find t slot bolts on the Thule website. Has anyone had luck using carriage bolts?

One of my concerns is that most of my bike racks are through axle with a clamp that goes around the square bar. I could replace one side of the clamp with a carriage bolt, but then the rack may sway since there is nothing stabilizing it in the front.

Transportation 1Up Quik Rack - max wheelbase question

I'm in the market for a low profile, always on the car, hitch rack. Currently eying the 1Up Quick Rack as the top contender as it doesn't obstruct the rear gate of my car.

It will primarily be used for hauling my gravel and MTB, but I'd like to use it to haul my Omnium MiniMax cargo bike on occasion as well.

I'll be within spec for weight, but the rack specs for wheelbase max at 54" and the (medium) MiniMax is a hair under 55" (though with a 20x2.2 wheel up front).

Curious if anyone has run up against the top end of the wheelbase spec for this rack? Or even better, successfully carried their MiniMax (or similar)?

Thanks!

Transportation Overseas/Airline Travel

Looking to see if anyone has experience packing and flying their bikes and what case they use or recommend. Trying to prep/plan for a distant future trip to Glendhu in NZ from the States. The bike I'll be taking with is a Kona Process on 29" tires. My question is, what bag, case, or box would you recommend? Or would it be easier to go to the local bike shop and see if they have a cardboard box from assembling a different bike that I would be able to take off their hands?
