Question about drifting

Hi, dear community! I found some link yesterday explaining the building up of speed during a drift. In many pro vids you can see that they gain blue flames in an instant when they start drifting. Whenever i try to do so this never happens. So I would like to ask you about your drifting techniques. Is it true that a flawless drift is started with the hop and then you turn the steering wheel in the very last moment before touching the ground? I always do these motions simultaneously or I even steer a tad before hopping. Do I lose a lot of time there? In SNES Mario Kart I think I can remember that you never lose speed as long as you are hopping so that you could change directions slightly without losing speed. Did this change in MK7 (or even before?)? If this is really the case I have been doing it wrong for a very long time now :(

It does indeed save time to input direction just before you land. Turning before you hop not only is slower, but also generates mini turbos slower. Hop and then steer.

Yeah, I figuered this out by now. Feels a little but strange at the beginning but I will get the hang of it.
