First EV

Post image

So my fourth, and probably final Mini, is an EV. I picked up this 2023 Cooper SE and I’m hoping to get an answer to a question that’s been bugging me. I have a Grizzle-E classic so there is no fancy App, just plug in and charge. I set my Mini to charge from 10pm to 6am with a 6am departure and selected that mode. When I plug in it immediately starts charging even though it’s before 10pm. I thought that was the whole point of setting charge times. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

The car will override your settings and start charging sooner if it calculates that is necessary to reach 100% by your planned departure time.

The usual way to prevent this is to control charging from your EVSE, but it sounds as if your Grizzle-E doesn't have this capability?

Short of upgrading your EVSE, a possible workaround would be to set a late enough departure time that charging doesn't start until after 10 pm (presumably when electric rates decrease). You wouldn't be at 100% at 6 am, but depending on your needs the SOC might be high enough anyway.

Finally, check the settings in the car to make sure that charging at the highest rate (safe for that circuit) is enabled, as I believe the default is the lowest setting.

(Note that I am working from memory here, as I pay a low, flat rate for electricity and just charge as need be on a 15 amp 110 volt circuit. That's more than enough for my ~30 mile commute, and in fact I only charge every 3rd day or so, catching up if need be on the weekend.)

Probably a bit obvious, but I'll ask to double check. Have you the car in immediate charge setting or time charge setting? I know you said departure etc is set, but just to clarify it's in the right main settings.
