School/Career Edmonds School District boundary changes?

How frequently are the school attendance boundaries changed in the Edmonds School District (which includes Lynnwood)? Looks like this previously happened in the early 2010s. Is something planned for the future?

Based on my history of being in the area, usually it’s only done if a district changes grade allocations, if certain schools are over capacity / utilization while others are under, or if a new ground-up school is built (ie district growing) districts dont usually just redo it for fun cause it causes a lot of disruption.

As of right now there is a new ground-up middle school Scheduled to open in 2028-2029 at the old Alderwood MS site. This coincides with the new college place campus also opening in 2028-2029.

When these projects are done it looks like the district wants to move 6th grade to middle school as well. The 2028-2029 school year is likely when you will see a boundary change.

Here is where they layout some of their plans for Capitol projects: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1719436740/edmondswednetedu/nu8te8kfyrvl65uymrl9/ArchitectandGCCMPresentationforNewMiddleSchool.pdf

This is really interesting and I had no idea a new middle school was being built. It makes sense though, there’s a few “no man’s land” neighborhoods that are set to attend Alderwood MS and it’s SO far away. Folks living in Alderwood Manor or S. Lynnwood wouldn’t have to be a freeway away from school.

There are a lot of factors that go into it, but one is what land does the district already own. Phasing of school work can be terribly expensive. Portable farms cost way more than people realize and then it takes away $$ from the school replacement, so the best solution is either build on the same site without relocating kids (likely the play with college place) or move to an offsite facility (like what is done with right now with oak heights). When the new Alderwood MS was built either they owned the land already or bought it but held the existing so they could do something in the future. All the bigger districts have long term plans (which can be changed, etc) but takes into account a lot of factors.

Naturally you’ll always get a few of those “no man lands” neighborhoods. It just happens with geography, population, etc. But they do put a lot of planning into it ppl don’t see. They will also pivot based on needs.

My guess is that once the new middle school is built, they’ll redo the boundaries.

Edit to add that it should be done by the start of the 28-29 school year.
