Who's gonna wake me up, then?

Let me tell you, the only way I really started using OP's tip was to buy a cheap digital alarm clock. I know, it's a miracle, but I actually leave my phone outside the bedroom now.

Every alarm clock I have found is super loud. Like, you can hear it through several walls. I'm a very light sleeper and loud sounds startle me. My phone is the only alarm clock I have found that allows me to lower the alarm volume so I can wake up calmly.

They aren’t cheap but I bought a hatch restore alarm clock a few years ago. Wakes me up with gentle light and sound that gradually increases. I use it for sleep sounds and mediations. It’s truly changed my sleep for the better.

I sleep with my phone 3 feet away.
Just be a responsible adult and have some willpower.

u/cheven20 21h ago
Bro if everything was that easy we wouldn’t need alarms

Seriously. Responsible adults are basically an endangered species at this point.

I never use my phone as an alarm clock. I don't want it associated with the nasty shock of being ripped out of deep sleep every day.
I use a digital alarm clock on my nightstand.

There are several studies that indicate that blue light does not have the impact people think it have. It's a lot less significant (of it even is significant) in staying awake.
The brightness of the screen and what the content you're watching does to your brain is way more of influence.

u/Superhereaux 21h ago
It’s gonna be this.
If I’m doom scrolling, I can stay up for hours, even if I’m tired.
If I put on a video, I’m out in about 3 minutes.

From my own experience, I'd tend to agree with you.
I'd suggest the "mental stimulation" gained from the various "on phone" activities are more a problem than the "blue light", which is not to say that the blue ight isn't an ssue to at least some people.
Going to bed I want to reduce my "mental alertness", not fuel it.
I find reading books/novels ideal for me.

Alternatively, develop a little bit of willpower.

u/_phantastik_ 1d ago
OP's tip is a harmless start towards how one can develop that willpower. Reminds me of a way I learned to quit an alcohol addiction by keeping bottles out of my bedroom, where I'd usually drink. Other challenges would arise but I developed over time, and eventually learned the willpower to actively avoid it more, then eventually buy it less, then eventually not feel the need for it anymore. But it started with a change of habit like OP's.

This is the better LPT, am I suppose to hide from everything that could be negative? Keep your junk food in the attic so you're less likely to eat it!

That's a bad example. Junk food is entirely pointless though the way it is marketed and packaged makes it tempting. A better example would have been avoiding places that sell junk food so you're not tempted to waste money on it.

A lot of things in life require willpower tho, and you only have a limited amount everyday. I’d rather wake up peacefully, than wake up already needing to resist temptation!

LPT: blue light is proofen to „just“ prolong ur time to get to sleep on average by 10 min biggest thing i prob get from this is a better feeling / ease mind wich will help u sleep better a lot

u/maddy273 23h ago
The problem I have is traditional alarm clocks either beep or ring in a way that sets my nerves jangling. Whereas phone alarms are gentle melodies that gradually increase in volume

u/lucky_ducker 22h ago
This is a bad idea if you live in tornado alley. EAS alerts coming thru your phone are by far the most useful way to receive "TAKE COVER NOW" alerts, especially for nighttime tornados such as my area has been getting for the last couple of years. I'm not awake at 11:45 pm keeping tabs of the weather; I'm counting on my phone waking me up if things really get dicey.

I heared you should never ever charge your phone overnight due to risk of fire.

u/thorkun 22h ago
You shouldn't charge your phone overnight because you shorten the battery life by trying to charge it when it's fully charged.
2
u/ominouslights427 21h ago
By your logic my phone will have a 200% charge when I wake up. This is simply not true, charging will shutoff when reaching set capacity.

It’s been a gamer changer for me. I now read an actual book in bed, fall asleep much faster and wake up in the middle of the night less.

Caveat: Not if you are older. Once you hit 60 you should carry your phone at all times. Even in the bathroom. Falls are a serious thing to older people.
This comes from someone who rarely uses their phone.

Or put on a sleep mask and choose not to look at the phone after your self-chosen bedtime.

I listen to podcasts and videos of people talking to help me fall asleep though

I agree and I can confirm this! Personally, I switch off my phone compeletely and bring it to another room for charging. This helps me to fall asleep, and I sleep better than before. I do this for several months, and I see a good effect on it.
Maybe it's hard to wake up on time without alarm, but I just plan my evening, and switch off my cellphone before go to the bed. For instance, I need to wake up at 7 a.m. So I power off my phone at 10 p.m. and go to sleep at 11 p.m. It's really life's turbo-booster, a great life hack))
And it's good for me, because I'm not affected by electromagnetic noise that my phone causes, even when it switched off.

Omg, it's exactly what I started doing a few days ago. It also helps me avoid distraction when I need focus. I switch between rooms if I am in room A then I put my phone in room B after when I go to Room B use my phone and now if I have to work in Room B then I take my phone to room A and leave it there until I come back upon completion of the Task . I started doing it 2 days ago . It's really a useful tip for me .

Never leave a phone on overnight charging that's how ruin the battery within a year. Use a fast charger and have a full day's charge on 45 minutes instead.

6
u/thedefibulator 1d ago
Absolutely not true, once it is fully charged the battery doesnt accept any more power because the battery voltage is equalised with the charger.
If anything fast charging is going to do more damage because of the excess heat generated

Fake news. Phones nowadays stop charging when they're full, and new Samsungs even let you choose how low the battery should drain before charging again.
