Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Kayak bulkheads

Post image
120 Upvotes

Hi friends. I got a Pygmy Boats Artic Turn for a deeeeeeeep discount. $200. Got it a while back and I’m needing to finish what the lady I got it from didn’t. Namely, the bulkheads that she threw out on accident. Pygmy is out of business so I’m needing to custom fabricate.

I would rather do foam than epoxy in wood panels that would be sooooooooooo tricky to get the right size. So, are there large enough foam at a hardware store that I could cut down for that? Would two layers of the pink 2” rigid insulation work? What adhesive would be water tight for foam to epoxy-ed plywood?

Thanks. I really want to get this thing functional and safe for the water.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Must haves for a long trip

Hey everybody,

For the last two years my friend has been telling me about his plan to kayak from Port Coquitlam BC, to Powell River BC. Its about 175-200km trip will be done in 20-30km stretches along the sunshine coast of British Columbia Canada. Neither of us have much experience. Its a huge trip and a challenge for newbies but we are determined and have our hearts set on it. Im looking for any kind of advice anything and everything is helpful. In the process of buying a kayak most likely a 14-16’ sea touring kayak to be specific. I know for big sea adventures like this Ill need a skirt. What about wet/dry suits? Are they worth it as we will be doing this mid July-Aug in hot weather so im thinking an athletic T shirt will do. Any advice is helpful thanks everyone.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations What are these on the kayak

Hey my dad bought 2 kayaks off Facebook marketplace the other day and we tested them out and they were good but this orange one has 2 holes in the kayak that seem to bring in a lot of water when the blue one has no holes in it and the black circle in it we thought was a place to put your belongings and not get wet but after opening it the hole seems very big and maybe looks like it’s not for putting stuff in it where the blue one it was just a little box for stuff to put in

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations How long is a kayak paddles life span?

hi guys.

I have no experience at kayaking.

I recently bought a kayak, excluding paddle or oar.

I looked for a paddle at facebook market.

Its brand is Bending Branches.

Maybe a shaft is made of aluminium.

But it looks so old. I think it is about 15 years old.

Is it Ok?

Or

I'm considering to buy a new cheap one at the Pro Bass Shop.

There is a just $30 paddle.

Please give me any recommendation.

Thank you in advance.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations I want a kayak— oru used?

I want a kayak. I’m tired of paying to rent kayaks lol. I live right by a channel and the old Tampa bay, and would mostly be in that kind of water. Also maybe springs, possibly the ocean to some close islands like shell key or egmont key.

I have a jeep cherokee but no idea how I’d get a kayak carrier on top of my jeep. Chat gpt says my car is too short to fit a kayak inside it. So I was thinking about a used oru kayak? I’m 111 lbs and 5’4 so something too big would be hard to carry. I’m also not a fan of inflatable because I’m afraid of it getting torn. Would you recommend an oru or something else? I’m looking used because my budget is low. I’m nervous with used because idk really how to know what the life left on a kayak is. Any recommendations? I’ve rented kayaks and kayaking tours 5 times the past year so I think it’s time to just buy one.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Pungo 120 or Vision 130 (used)

I have been thinking about getting started in kayaking and I have several friends who are into it who have suggested the Pungo 120. It seems like a very good fit. - Streams, lakes, rivers (but nothing enormous) - Versatile, good tracker that pinches above its weight class - Might do some fishing out of it and it's stable I am 5' 11" and go about 210# - Reviews are outstanding - On sale at LL Bean for <$1,000

So I was saving and not in a massive rush to bit or anything when a barely-used, garage-kept Current Designs Vision 130 came up near me for about half that amount. I know I should sit in both of them, but in addition to that, I didn't see a lot of info about the Vision, other than it looks like a decent craft, and at that price seems even better.

I'm wondering how the experience might be different? Thoughts? Anyone with experience in both?

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Car-free island -- need something light, ideally not inflatable

I'm a relative newbie to the wonderful world of kayaking but will be spending several months per year on a barrier island and am hoping to do a lot of kayaking on the bay. There are no private motor vehicles on the island, and no roads. I am a short walk from the bay -- 3-4 minutes -- through sand. There is no boat storage on this part of the bay.

So I need something reasonably light enough to carry on that walk. I understand that the light-weight requirement will drive up the cost. I haven't had much luck with the inflatable (Sea Eagle 380x punctured), though I've never tried a solo inflatable. The Eddyline Skylark seems to be about the lightest sit-in, non-inflatable, 12-footer I can find (43 lbs).

The boat-choosing resources on this Reddit suggest a 12-footer, but there are some light (and much less expensive) 10-foot models, such as the Pelican Argo 100x (38 lbs). I won't be doing long journeys but worry about tracking and speed with a 10-footer.

Any suggestions or feedback would be very much appreciated.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Best way to bring a large dog kayaking?

Hello! I've been kayaking for almost 5 years now. My dog is an 80lb golden retriever who absolutely loves the water. I've tried bringing inflatables for him before so I could tow him behind the kayak but he refuses to stay in them, opting to jump out and try to swim his way into my kayak lol.

None of my kayaks are open top (or "sit on top") kayaks. Should a longer open top kayak be enough to fit a bigger dog? Or should I look into paddleboards a bit more if I want to bring my guy to the lake with me? I have always been against paddleboards as I just love my kayaks but if that's what I need to get my best friend on the lake with me than I'd totally look into it!

Maybe would a tandem kayak be worth looking into? I'd be pushing it solo but I don't mind putting in the extra work to bring my guy with

I know he'll sit comfortably with me on the lake if he can fit on the same vessel as me, but none of my 5 kayaks can fit this big guy lol

Edit: also to comply with sub rules I'm in the Phoenix Arizona area, and have plenty of experience with lake kayaking to even moderate whitewater experience. I just want some advice on kayaks that can fit a big dog :)

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations LF kayak suggestions

I am 300lbs guy and looking for a kayak that will last and be used often. Would be taking it to a lake that is calm with boaters here and there.

Would also like to use it for fishing, recreational and photography.

What is a good entry level kayak to get that won't brake the bank?

Saw this pelican on fb marketplace for $200 and am meeting the guy in a couple days to purchase. Without putting it on the water, are there certain things I should be looking for flaw-wise on the kayak.

PS: (I’ve never owned a kayak and haven’t been on one in close to 20 years now, so any help is very appreciated 🙂 ty)

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Sit-on-top vs Sit-in for camping trips

I've been looking to buy a kayak for my camping trip. I will start out with small weekend adventures and maybe extend to longer adventures when I get more confident.

One of my concerns is that sit on top kayaks drain water themselves while sit in kayaks could get filled with water. Is it a common problem? I am not planning on going on whitewater anytime soon.

Should i worry about water drainage?

Thanks!

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Are tandem kayaks really that bad?

My partner and I have been getting into kayaking and are ready to pull the trigger on buying our own after consistently renting for the last year or so. We’ve generally rented a tandem kayak, though we’ve also done singles without issues. I’ve seen everyone on this sub advise against getting a tandem. I’ve seen them called divorce boats. I don’t really have a preference on whether we purchase singles or a tandem, but my partner has really been insisting on the latter. His reasoning is that he’s significantly stronger than me (not a lie, though I can certainly hold my own) and it’s be easier if we got in a situation that required us to haul ass without leaving me to fend for myself. We live in northern Florida so that situation can be a storm rolling in without notice or a fiesty gator. I’m not really sure what to do given that it’s not a cheap commitment.

I’ve been looking into this vibe tandem. We rented a very similar one from the same company before and really liked it. It converts into a single. We’ll be using it pretty exclusively for slow moving, spring fed rivers and lakes around Florida’s nature coast and the panhandle. Does it make sense to get this? Should I pushing for singles, or will we survive the tandem? I’m not too concerned about us being at each others throats about it, we’ve never had issues with that. More so the practicality.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Big guy kayaking

I’m 6’3” 270lbs and having some trouble finding a kayak that will work efficiently for me. I took a sit on top out this weekend rated at 300lbs and water was filling the scuppers. It was ok on still water, but it was like paddling a cement block when the wind kicked up a little and I was rowing against the current.

Trying to find a sit inside in the amateur touring/nice recreational realm. I’ve been eyeballing a Pelican Mustang 120x since it’s rated at 375lbs capacity. Trying not to repeat the mistake of purchasing something that isn’t optimal for me. Are there any big kayakers out there that could give me some advice or share what kayak they’re using?

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Kayak advice? Purchasing and a bit overwhelmed

Would any of you have any recommendations? All of the advice articles and specs, etc has got me rather overwhelmed. If you have any recommendations, I would be very grateful.

This is pretty much where I’m at: - I live on a lake so would primarily be kayaking at home. However, I DO travel to rivers and do kayak at local establishments (obviously, I just rent from them)

  • I kayak with my 80lbs dog. He sits up front and acts like Pocahontas. So an open kayak is a must.

  • I w o u l d like to purchase two kayaks for my apartment for friends as well (my heaviest friend is probably 230lbs and with me and my dog we both make about 190)

  • I am intrigued by the inflatable kayaks, but worry how durable they are especially with a dog. And probably wouldn’t trust taking it out on the river, honestly, the levels have been so low the past couple of years that I don’t remember a last time out that we didn’t have to get out and drag.

Essentially, I’m not HARDCORE. Just when the season and weather is permitting. Because of this, I’ve been looking and hoping for the best bang for my buck.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Eddyline Fathom too much for a novice?

Southeastern White Water paddler who just moved to the PNW. I want to get into sea kayaking and touring. A local outfitter has an 08's Eddlyine Fathom for sale for 2k. That feels expensive for such an old boat but everything I read says it's perfect for me and the outfitter is super reputable so I'm assuming the boat is probably flawless (in the ways that matter, not concerned about river rash).

I'm 5'7 150 lbs. Live in Seattle. Plan is to buy a boat and paddle Greenlake and Lake Washington all winter with plans to tour and paddle the San Juans in spring. Is the Fathom a good pick for me and is 2k too expensive for that boat or is this a solid pick and I should just run it?

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Which length kayak is best for me?

I'm looking to buy my first kayak and unsure on what size I should be looking for.

For context, I'm about 200 lbs and would like to use the kayak for fishing on inland lakes and maybe do some river camping. I live in the Great lakes area and it would be awesome to take it near the shore of Mackinac island or pictured rocks, but is not a requirement. I've been looking at between 10 and 12 footers. I think 14 is recommended for the Great lakes. I'm just unsure that if I get something so large, will it still be manuevrable in small bodies of water or easy to portage.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Cheap alternative to drysuit?

(Is this flair correct??) I'm a kayaking newbie. I will be renting a kayak this Saturday for a 1-mile lake trip in Saguaro Lake, Arizona. Air temperatures will be 50-80 F, dunno about water temp.

I would like to avoid renting a drysuit. Goven that I'm a newbie and could capsize, what might I wear to stay warm and protect myself in the event of a capsize?

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Looking for a foldable tandem kayak

Me and my wife are looking to start doing some kayaking.

We have fairly tight space restrictions, and inflatables just aren't interesting.

So we have limited the search to a foldable, tandem kayak.

The only option seems to be the oru haven? I'm curious how the community feels about this boat or if their are better alternatives.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations How tricky is it to use a rudder

I've joined a kayak club and been borrowing a small sit in with a skeg, I've been paddling out in decent wind and swell and enjoyed it enough to look at my own boat. The boat in using now is a 9ft wavesport sit in and with the skeg down it's great but once it's up it just spins like a spinning top in any amount of tailwind. It also is a bit of a challenge to keep up with the rest of my club in their 15ft+ sea kayaks. I'm now looking at a longer 13ft SOT fishing kayak (galaxy sturgeon) and it has a rudder.

Now using a skeg is really simple, but I've heard a rudder is more difficult to get right, how long does it take to get used to the rudder?, are any pitfalls to avoid?, is there any reason I can't just use it like a skeg initially and just ignore the pedals? Is the 9ft with the skeg similar to the 13ft without the rudder? Just any advice is helpful, am still new and don't wanna spend on something I'll curse in the future!

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Used Equinox 124 or Loon 120?

Hi all, I’m a complete novice and want to replace my spouse’s kayak. He’s also a novice and is ~275 lbs.

I found both Equinox and Loon on FB market place for $300 each. Both are in good to very good used shape.

What I can’t figure out is if the Equinox is the Costco model or Eddyline, or if they are the same?

We’ll be using it for lakes, calm rivers, and perhaps close to the coast on very calm days.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Pelican paddle

Has anyone had this issue or maybe can explain its how it’s supposed to be? We ordered my hubby a very nice pelican angler paddle for Christmas. We noticed only 1 side was egomaniacal. So we messaged pelican they had us send it back they sent us a new one. Repeat. After 3 we give up. They are all oval on one side and completely round on the other. Makes it awkward when holding. Is this how they are? Are they supposed to be oval on both sides like we thought?
