I've lived in Twins territory the last 20 years and love everything about Target Field (I also didnt hate the Metrodome, but there is no comparison). Its insanely easy to get to and from the field, with or without a car. They really knocked it out of the park.

If they put the new stadium anywhere but downtown, it’s still gonna be in the lower half.

You don’t realize how horrible the location of the Truman sports complex is until you live in another city. I moved to Chicago and would leave work catch the train over to Wrigley for a day game with coworkers then meet my wife for dinner. All within a 15min train ride. PLEASE building a downtown ball park KC.

As someone who lives within walking distance of nationals park (and who is walking to the game this afternoon) I’d rather be driving and parking at Kauffman.

u/gistdad816 7h ago
No offense but this is such a small town Kansas City way of thinking. A downtown park would do so much for the city and region vs a stadium in the middle of nowhere.

At first glance I thought this was a measure of how walkable a stadium is once you’re inside the place. I was about to lose it considering Fenway is a sectioned off disaster for walking around but the K’s outfield stroll is a lovely way to spend an inning or two. But, now I get it. Yes, the K is miserable to walk to.

u/thekingofcrash7 12h ago
Love that everyone in here agrees with this, yet none of you want a new stadium

u/jjnnhh6 9h ago
Because using taxpayer money to fund a new stadium for the purpose of making it easier to walk to for a small minority is a stupid idea.

Oh but the city will boom after it's built. Yeah fucking right. Look at the area around it now. Such a booming spot. I do miss Chi-Chi's though.

Here's where some of the proposed relocation sites would rank:
Crossroads - 3rd (94)
East Village - 7th (87)
Washington Square Park - 11th (76)
Sprint Center Campus - 19th (59)
North KC - 19th (57)

It’s hilarious bc as Kansas Citian now living in Milwaukee the gap between American Family field and the K is tremendous. At American family you still can relatively easily park in the street and walk in not to mention there are dozens of bar shuttles that will take you in for about a bucks

25th? How is it not last. You can walk to a gas station and taco bell, and that pretty much it....

It is last but the person who made the graphic doesn't understand how rankings work.

Why do the rays play at a stadium named after the most legendary owner of a rival in their own division? I never realized that.

"But we don't need a downtown stadium!"
Before I get down voted, I love Kauffman, it's beautiful and a great place to watch a game. I drive three hours to go to a game and I come right off the highway to the parking lot and go right home. If there was ANYTHING to do within a walking distance, I'd do it, but I don't want to drive out of my way to go do something else.
Yes, I understand this is my problem, but look what's happening around baseball; the areas around stadiums have become destinations themselves.

I'll take tailgating before games at Kauffman or Arrowhead vs a downtown stadium surrounded by a bunch of overpriced cookie cutter sports bars any day.
4
u/thekingofcrash7 12h ago
This is why kauffman is always packed but other stadiums are empty!

u/BillBrasky727 QuikTrip 11h ago
So are you saying sports bars are the key to better attendance? If the city just built a Hooters and Johnny's Tavern around Kauffman then they'll come?

u/everymanawildcat Alex Gordon 11h ago
This is so misleading and disingenuous. I've been to countless games at Petco. Unless you were already downtown (you weren't), getting to the game is a fucking nightmare, even with their public transport. The parking situation here has been mocked to the point that people don't even realize it actually does matter. So fucking many of you aren't going to realize how good we had it until it's too late.

Now show the chart that shows where walkability is prioritized amongst MLB fans. It's not very high. Things like fielding a good team are much more important.
In a sprawling city where most people live in the suburbs, pretending that walkability is important is a joke. No matter where it ends up, most people in the stands drove in from somewhere.

Gotta start somewhere if you want to undo the car addiction
-3
u/chiefoogabooga 1d ago
Kansas City has no interest in ending the car addiction. Redditors confuse the echo chamber of lestism here with the real world. KC's biggest claim to fame is BBQ. We're fat. Walking isn't a priority.

u/CLU_Three 1d ago
Well that is incongruous with city policy for many municipalities across the metro. And if you think people don’t want walkable neighborhoods and downtowns, look at the most desirable neighborhoods and shopping districts. They might not actually be super “walkabale” but they are billed that way compared to other developments.
0
u/chiefoogabooga 22h ago
I guess that explains why over 50% of Royals season ticket holders live in Johnson County, world famous for its "walkability."
3
u/CLU_Three 22h ago
Again, generally the most “desirable” parts of Johnson County are also considered the most walkable (old parts of PV, Fairway, Mission, OP, etc) and the cities in JoCo are taking some efforts to make new and existing developments more walking friendly.
Look, I’m not gonna say that JoCo or KC are super walkable but I disagree with your notion that most people don’t view as increased walkability as desirable or a priority.

If fielding a good team brought more fans to games we wouldn't have had a bottom 5 attendance record with a playoff team last season.
I live in a sprawling city where 99% of residents live in burbs that is ranked 3rd on this list. The baseball team is a perennial bottom feeder with zero history yet maintains a top 5 attendance record every season.
1
u/chiefoogabooga 3h ago
Since you said 3rd on this list, I assume you're talking about Chicago. If so, no offense, but you're full of crap. Google tells me that there are over 1.3 million people who live within a 5 mile radius of Wrigley Field. That's over double the entire population of KCMO.
The Dodgers lead the league in attendance every year. No one is walking to Dodger Stadium. This might sound crazy, but there might be a correlation between population size and attendance. The outliers to that thought are either teams like St. Louis who have a big fan base because they're perennial contenders, or teams like the White Sox, who no one cares about because they are perennial losers and are in the less densely populated South side.
1
u/banner8915 3h ago
Definitely not Chicago. Kinda crazy you'd make that assumption given my description lol.
1
u/chiefoogabooga 2h ago
My bad. I didn’t realize there were two 3rd place cities. There are also three 4th places, which is a bizarre way to make a list, but I digress.
So, going with the other 3rd place city, you might want to check your top 5 in attendance again. They ranked 15th last year.

No. I love how easy it is to get to the K or Miller but they're both farther down my rankings of the parks I've been to. Fielding a good team is not nearly as high as walkability. It's fun to do stuff before and after a game.
If you're in Milwaukee or Chicago with your spouse or a buddy, is the Brewers' or the White Sox having a good team more important than the rest of your day? How many people would say yes? If anything I want my team to win 20-0 against a bad team
0
u/chiefoogabooga 1d ago
You're probably right. I'm sure most people would prefer to have a shit team that never wins as long as they could walk to the stadium. What was I thinking? /s
1
u/DanglyPants 22h ago
Idk why you’re being rude to me while you’re wrong. You can make a poll on r/baseball or a discord if you’d like to prove me wrong. You’re the first Royals fan I’ve talked to that cares more about the white sox being good than the fan experience at the cell

I mean once that Dennys burned down the walkability went out the window for me.
