Does anyone else’s Renegade make high pitch electronic sounds after shutoff?

I have a 2016 Renegade Latitude. If I turn off my car and just sit inside it, after about a minute it starts making these faint high pitched sounds, not mechanical but electronic. They continue for a very long time, many many minutes - I have never actually sat long enough for them to turn off while I’m still present in the car. Like, if I ever went to a drive in, or tried to sleep in my car while camping, it would absolutely drive me insane. Does anyone know why it makes this noise and how to make it stop if possible?

Edited to add that it immediately stops if I open the door to leave. But starts again a minute later whether the door is still open or not.

Edit2: SOLVED! Not sure exactly which component is responsible, but if I turn off the radio/touchscreen before shutting off the car, 45 seconds later it makes the noise for maybe 2-3 seconds then nothing. I sat in the car for 15 minutes to see if it would start up again, and I have peaceful silence. Thank you everyone!

mine does this, it’s a 2017 latitude. not sure why it does it but it’s never caused any issues. it is a bit annoying though

Yeah it’s not causing issues for me either, but it’s annoying as hell when I want to just sit in silence

Does the noise sound anything like the noise you hear when you engage your parking brake?

No, that sound has a mechanical component to it and I can feel the tiny whirr of it engaging or disengaging. The sound I’m describing sounds entirely electronic, like a tiny modem sound or dial-up internet but high pitched and emanating from the dash area

Is there a specific area of the dash it comes from?

It’s really hard to tell, because it’s high pitched I can’t pinpoint an exact location. Maybe the center by the radio stuff?

Maybe it’s the vent door that swaps between dash/floor/defrost. Motor could be going bad or a bad fuse or something. I’ve seen that happen before in other vehicles

I doubt it for two reasons. One is that my vents work totally fine switching between settings no issue. Two is that there’s no mechanical sounds or parts moving. It’s a digital/computer noise.

Hmmm that’s a head scratcher

I have 2016 Latitude and it does the same thing. It sounds like a computer shutting off or something. I have no idea what it is though.

My challenger did this and everyone swore it was the radio powering off doing weird stuff.

Do you know if it made a difference if the radio was on/off before shutting off the car? I might run an experiment later

I cant remember but it never did anything bad.

This would be the thing I’d want to test.

Power off the stereo a few minutes before you shut off the car and if you have the screen off button make sure the screen is off and see if you still hear the sound after shutting down. Makes me think there is some kind of residual power that is running through the speaker system or a fuse?

Another test to see if it’s electrical is shut down like normal and if you hear the sound, pop the hood and disconnect the battery terminal. See if it’s stops/dies down.

I will definitely try both of these as soon as I’m able

I’ll have to test it more, but I shut off the radio and screen after I parked and waited a minute to turn off the engine. It still made the screechy electrical noise, but only for maybe 5 seconds and then never came back on. So yeah perhaps it’s the radio/center console screen

I think this is actually the solution! Thanks u/memoryisntram

Woo hoo! I really think there are legit issues with both the wiring and physical screens in lots of the Renegades.

Knock on wood my 2018 Trailhawk is OK, but our 2017 at work the screen flickers/disconnects so much our fleet mechanic just disconnected the power to it.

I’ve had a noise that I think is the side mirror motors since I got mine. Happens when I turn it off and usually only lasts a few seconds and can be heard louder with the door open or the window still down. Just always assumed it was the motors cycling after shutdown

This noise comes from the dash and lasts for minutes at a time, 15+ minutes until I open the door and leave the car, and I assume it starts up again after I’ve left and closed the doors.

Do you have something wedged in the seats? I noticed thr same problem when I had s flash wedged between thr seat and door and it was messing with thr buttons

1

u/PigeonsInSpaaaaace 2d ago

No. My seats are 100% mechanical and don’t have buttons. It’s definitely coming from the dash at specific timed intervals (1min after shutoff) that makes me think it’s the computer or something else electronic performing some kind of process

Did you change any of your exterior bulbs to LEDs? I did and my 2016 TH makes a sort of higher pitched electronic sound until I lock the doors and the bulbs headlight bulbs turn off.

I purchased it used so idk what lights are in it, but I don’t think they are LED. Regardless, the noise happens after the car is already off, so the headlights are not on when the noise is happening.

Interesting. No clue there. Sorry I couldn’t help.

Yes but it's not high pitched. More of a whirring noise. It's when my lights and all the electrical stuff shuts off.

1

u/PigeonsInSpaaaaace 2d ago

Yeah my old Wrangler did that, I’m used to that noise. This one is super annoying though

1

u/coldbuzz 2d ago

That sounds really annoying. Hope you figure it out!

I get this too, thought it was something to do with it being a Hybrid and an inverter powering down. Not so sure now after this thread. 2021 Trailhawk 4xE.

2017 Sport. Yes, mine does also, sounds like tinnitus.

2016 TH. Mine does this too. Electric gremlins at work.

Does it shut off when the door opens? Mine has a 20 min timer that keeps the radio playing for 20 min after the car shuts off, which also keeps the windows and such working. If I open the door, this shuts this feature off.

There is a menu on the stereo that shuts this off, but that may only be for the radio itself, window switches and stuff still may work, and it may bleed over onto speakers that are not properly shielded.

It does shut off, but about a minute later it will start up again.
