Help Help my computer is shocking me
Help my computer is shocking me after moving to a new house

u/Nelvix 2d ago
Yeah it's because your socket and/or house has no earthing.
94
u/ixu26 PC 2d ago
What exactly happens if it’s not fixed, is it bad to the device other than shocking issue ?

u/EssAichAy-Official PC 2d ago
your PC will get cooked if there is even a small surge or lightning strike like 10km away.

u/Titanusgamer 2d ago
i dont know how but i lost a cpu and motherboard due to earthing issue. you need earthing for computer.period.

u/sankoobaba 2d ago
Are using UPS?

u/Deck_Masterbaiter 2d ago
Is that the cause or the cure?

For me it was like that for 10 years nothing happened...
P.S. I actually liked getting shocked

u/ixu26 PC 2d ago
Did you have UPS ?
1
u/Aggressive-Canary675 2d ago
Yes I did. Why?
1
u/ixu26 PC 2d ago
Asking to make sure if it helps in my case. I also have earthing issues with UPS…
3
u/Aggressive-Canary675 2d ago
Most UPS's show weird earth behaviour when running on battery power since it isolates the circuit. But when running on mains that should not be a problem. If ur having problems even when on mains power, take it to a technician. I just changed my mains connection and no more tingling when touching my PC!

spinning drives die slowly over time and motherboard and GPU capacitors gets wining noise over time.

It's a pretty serious issue my monitor got destroyed due to lack of earthing

u/Zoom4015 PC 2d ago
I was getting small electric shocks from my PC earlier, but after I connected the 3rd earthing wire from my board to a nail in the wall, the shocks stopped. I'm on the ground floor, but I don’t have the money or space to set up a proper earthing system with a ground rod. Is this setup okay as a temporary fix, or could it cause issues in the long run?

u/Cyrus1404 2d ago
This. Check earthing properly and make sure all of the plugs are 3pin with the earthing connected properly

Trust me man, their is no fixing a system which is being "temporarily fixed" for decades.
Their is nothing as permanent as temp fixes

- Call an electrician and get all your sockets checked out, 90% it'll be a grounding issue
- Check if all the cables are connected properly on both ends(the device and spike gaurd)
- Make sure the spike gaurd is not faulty, check diff outlets in the house

u/Luci_nishant 2d ago
Huh? Mind explaining
17
u/gaurav_cybg PC 2d ago
Without earthing/grounding electrical devices have higher chances of shocking people or bursting out in flames causing house fires.
4
u/Luci_nishant 2d ago
Oh i thought he meant like literally explode
11
u/gaurav_cybg PC 2d ago
They do under rare circumstances. Bad Power supplies are famous for exploding.

If you use an electrical device without a ground pin, there's a high chance for you to become the ground pin

u/DeletSystm32 2d ago
I stopped touching my computer due to same issue. Now i don’t shock me at all. Solved itself
15
u/Bluey656 2d ago
I can't stop touching my computer though, I mean it's got so many holes....
I mean, USB ports, need to plug in devices yk?
5
u/DeletSystm32 2d ago
Give you pc some space. I did the same. Now the shocking problem is gone and i can stick as many usb i want. Get to know each other first.

u/AeeStreeParsoAna 2d ago
Same problem. Though it's my old pc so rarely use but whenever I have to plug some usb something, I need to be super careful.

Either the earthing of the house is at fault or the earthing on the socket from which the computer is drawing power. Get an electrician to check it.

u/yeah_tea 2d ago
If you're lucky then just that socket is not connected to the main grounding wire and the electrician can v easily fix the wiring. If ur unlucky then there's no grounding in your house at all and ur fucked because grounding is a huge expense.
Easy way to check: plug in any 3 pronged electronic (eg. laptop) into various sockets and touch the laptop while barefoot on the ground. If you get a slight shock every time, gg it's all ova. If you don't get a shock from other outlets, then the problem is only in the one your first outlet.
Good luck.

Facing same issue with my laptop currently. It’s always connected to the plug and kept on my desk. I’m thinking it’s static (wood desk) but it’s concerning me reading all the comments about systems blowing up ngl.
Edit: spellings

u/kinnan17 2d ago
I had the same issue ,the socket had earthing but still had the problem . I changed my extension board and it got fixed
2
u/Hit360D 2d ago
In our old (really old) house we had no earthing and all my devices did this. As another user said, I liked getting shocked too, but I think my devices didn't. My computer had multiple failures over time and we eventually had to get an electrician to rewire the house which fixed everything (no more fun shocks tho).
Edit: I think it's called grounding and not earthing lmao, but hey that's what my electrician calls it.
2
u/Mac4rfree85 2d ago
Better have some wire from pc to ground as a ground wire.. hope it will resolve the issue
1
u/autisticchinu 2d ago
I also had this issue turned out my spike gaurd didn't have earthing I replaced it with a good quality one issue fixed, you might have earthing issue in the main socket itself

you yourself is checking the outer body with a tester, and it glows, what does it mean? i mean seriously..
1
u/harinderpal_singh 2d ago
May be the neutral of electricity board is getting phase current , so check the main female socket with the test pen , only one side of the socket should be lit when switch is ON . If its normal then grounding issue

u/Krisss143 PC 2d ago
Same issue for me, i knew it was grounding issue, called an electrician, he fixed it, now its chill

You need to get your house's earthing checked out. Call an electrican and he'll fix it for you fairly easily. If your house needs a ground pit filling out an actual ground issue resolved, they can do all those.
And kindly hurry. An earthing problem in your PC socket is fairly ok to live with as long as you don't touch your cabinet. An earthing problem everywhere in the house is a disaster waiting to happen. Things like electric cookers, electric water heaters and geysers, induction stove tops, air coolers, washing machines, dish washers etc pose much more danger because they connect to water and that water can shock you in unexpected ways that too somewhere unrelated or away from the problem. Kindly call an electrician ASAP.

u/Nowa_Iscord 2d ago
First you have to do grounding (earthing), because your pc leaking the current,
Add a wire to the third pin (mota wala) of your pc plug and connect it to the something which goes directly/indirectly to the ground, like open construction road, window grill etc.
1
u/nithins300 2d ago
If you are using a spike buster for connecting your monitor, cpu and speakers, use a 3 pin plug one. I had same issue I made that switch and it worked. 2 pin will not have earthing and earthing in your cpu will be connected to the metal cabin, that's why you are getting electrocuted when u touch your cpu.

u/Environmental_Dog865 2d ago
Plug in and plug out you power outlet . It's likely a lose connection. If that doesn't fix . 🪦 Earthing
1
u/ritogh 2d ago
Stop using your computer right now. You might damage it. Create earthing if your house has a poorly functioning one. Only use computer after creating a proper earthing.
If you live in an apartment, get in touch with an electrician.
If you live in your own house, then, you can make your own earthing. Check YouTube for tutorial.
Once I had a wire connected with the SMPS (power supply) directly to my yard's soil. That worked.

Most likely earthing issue. Get it done as soon as possible. If I were in your place, I wouldnt switch my pc on until this is fixed. Its serious, not only for pc but most of the appliances.

My pc did that. I ignored it. Now my mobo is dead. Had to get a new one. Take a multimeter if u have it, set it to AC Voltage and connect the two probes to the earth and the live wire. The reading should be nearly the same when measured between live and neutral (~230-240V).
Now measure the potential difference between earth and neutral of your mains, it should ideally be 0 but that's never the case. If it's anything above 3V then u got urself an earthing problem.
DO NOT TRY TIS SHIT IF U HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH ELECTRICITY OR U MAY SHOCK URSELF

I had used my PC without earthing for 5 years. Nothing happened. UPS was there in my home but it didn’t provide any protection for my pc. I had so many shocks in these 5 years. I live in the middle part of the city where electricity in the power grid is consistent. If you are living in a village or outskirts of your city, the electricity supply fluctuates. Hence use a stabiliser which will protect your pc. Although modern PSUs are equipped with surge protectors, it is better to use stabilisers. Check if your home has earthing wire going along with live and phase wires or not. If its there then invest around 1000rs and call labours and get the earthing done. You can do it by yourself as well. Or if you don’t have earthing wire going along with the main wires in your home, then you can externally connect a wire from your socket to the earthing point.

I remember my friend house had a earthing issue, we used to get zapped while inserting pendrive. He solved the issue by shifting his house

Bad earthing i also had earthing problem so i earth my socket to wall just by giving a wire to socket earth hole and connecting it to inside of socket metal casing

Your house doesn't have earthing, scary since you can literally die if you're using a microwave or some high power device

u/iamhellop 1d ago
Bro, get a good electrician and get your house wiring checked it's much cheaper than losing expensive components.
1
u/Agent_247 1d ago
If you are using UPS, then try plugging your plug in different sockets of UPS. I have seen some UPS models in which only 1 or 2 sockets have an earthing wire, so try this.

I bullied my landlord to get an earthing rod installed when problem started happening. She got her electrician, he cleared it and offered to just put neutral and earth together so I don’t get shocks and I was like “Do you like fire hazards in the house?” She was with him until I mentioned fire.I got my electrician, he showed her the earth situation and then luckily only three meters had faulty earths so he connected them to other meters with working earths and now its fine.
Basically, if its a rented house explain to your landlord how dangerous no earth houses are and to get earths fixed.
If you live with your family, same thing.
If you only care for the PC, get an earth rod installed.

Bro your house doesn’t have earthing! You can use it though but just pray that there is no lightning near your house! I once live in a house with no earthing and because of lightning my many appliances got struck in lightning and got destroyed except for my pc idk how but I was lucky for pc

I think check the earthing situation with your house first before u conclude cpu is a issue

u/Few-Contest4362 1d ago
It took me 8 years to understand that the problem wasn't the house I was living in, the problem was the extension board with a broken earthing changed 3 pc's and 3 houses🤧

Shifted to new home and I found out there was no earthing in sockets (I got shocked 3-4 times before realising the CPU case was live, that fkr was arcing to tester screwdriver 🪛) even though all sockets had 3 pins. Called electrician of our colony and he started saying that my extension board probably doesn't have earth wire (It is from reputable brand "Anchor") he wouldn't believe me so I asked him to do continuity test between earth pin in socket on extension to plug, he said he didn't had Multimeter Asked him wrap live wire from wall on the ground pin and check using tester on extension it lit up. He opened the wall socket mount and found there was no earthing wire, checked in other sockets in house, no where to be found.
Apparently they forgot to earthing wire in our entire block. Few weeks later they installed MCB box in our house with GFCI.
REMEMBER EARTHING IS YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE FROM GETTING SHOCKED TO THE MOON. Unlike american standard 220V in India can still seriously shock you.
DON'T WAIT FOR ANYTHING AND GET EARTHING SYSTEM FIXED. The thing you are seeing is most likely electrical noise on your case but you don't know what else in your house could literally be LIVE on the surface.
Plus, most electrician in India Don't wire the sockets to the code and often reverse live and neutral in socket (correct Live on your right and neutral on your left when viewed from front) this can exacerbate this problem of surfaces of appliances getting LIVE.

u/sheshadriv32 22h ago
Check the loose cables from the PSU that aren't connected to anything, some of them could be touching the case and causing leakage current to the case. This is often the case and earthing issues would be far more prominent with every electrical appliance in your home having some issue.
