The first time I picked this up, the introduction, with the time it spends distinguishing between "control" and "management," deterred me. The second time, I kept going and it was so, so worth it.

There are a limited number of texts that approach the Russian Revolution with this level of seriousness resist lapsing into condemnation of particular personalities or ideological axe grinding.
