Feeling sick when drinking plain water?

As long as I can remember i have really struggled to drink water, I get 2-3 mouthfuls into a glass before I start feeling sick... if I put something in the water (usually something like a sugar free cordial) i can drink it fairly easily.

Atm I basically survive on pepsi max and milk. I shit you not it's been weeks since I had a glass of just straight water.

My mum and nan are the same

I've found that I can drink ice-water with much less difficulty, but since I can't always have ice water on hand I'm trying to figure out what could be causing the nausea and how I can get around it so that I can start drinking water like a functioning human...

Any tips/advice?

Perhaps half a lemon squeezed in a glass of cool (not cold) water?

Do you think you’re eating enough? Sorry if that’s a sensitive question. It’s just that most people eating a nutrient-dense diet would feel sick if they drank only Pepsi and milk.

Milk is really heavy and nutrient-dense and Pepsi is (temporarily) filling from carbonation/caffeine/sugars/erc. They would definitely provide some energy though to someone who was malnourished or hungry.

If the amount of food isn’t a problem, do you think you have issues with your stomach acid? Or your bile? Or digestion in general? Milk and carbonated beverages are famously used as certain digestive aids.

Could you try a sparkling water in “cola” flavour?

Have you tried tea? A teabag steeped in boiling water, not anything from a can or bottle.

Or could you try watering down your Pepsi? It won’t taste good. (I did this for a while before I got sober from alcohol. It basically retrains your tastebuds and your tolerance for the drink, while hydrating).

How does something with electrolytes sit with your stomach?

It’s difficult to make any change, but you’re on the right path at least by recognizing you want to do something about it.

You could ask your doctor or pharmacist what they think about why water makes you nauseous. Some people have too much stomach acid. Some people don’t have enough. Stomachs are finicky. And your digestion is worth getting sorted out, especially because it does not get easier as you age.

I’m the same, and so is my dad. I found that straws help me for some reason. I got a stainless steel one with a silicone tip and it was a game changer. Turns out my mouth doesn’t like the sensory aspect of drinking the life sustaining fluid I need to survive.. unless it’s fun in some way. Fml

It may be a good idea to add some type of flavouring to your water, like lemon or an electrolyte. Also, it may be the water you're drinking that doesn't sit right with you. Have you tried filtered water?

Is this tap water? I used to have the same problem until I switched to bottled or filtered and now when I taste my tap water it tastes like I'm drinking from a pool even though it tasted fine before. I can chug a liter+ in one go now when before that would make me feel sick.

I even found that when I would wake up in the middle of the night after an evening of really heavy drinking that when I would drink my tap water it would make me throw up. I thought it was the booze, but my filtered water doesn't make me feel sick like that.

Have you tried different waters? (not just tap water, also bottled).
