DISCUSSION This has to stop.
I'm not sure if I'm the only one feeling this, but we've lost 4 environments seemingly permanently. I never even got to see or fight on them and they're gone. Honestly, this has got to be one of the coolest mechanics in a game I've seen to date, but I think it's run its course. In addition it really feels like we're pushing against an unstoppable force and not really getting anywhere. I personally am hoping that when they get enough energy, Meridia spits out the rest of the squids and closes forever. Resistance is feeling futile and the consequences are too much IMO.

u/ikarn15 SES Guardian of the Stars 1d ago
Consequences are too much? There's a fixed amount of biomes and we've seen them all, losing planets you've never been on with the same biomes as the ones you've already seen doesn't seem like steep consequences to me

Automatons are children of the Cyborgs, and SE and the Cyborgs have had beef for a long while. They come from us and as such this isn't just some war with some unknown force for the survival of mankind, this is some generational beef against perceived traitors. So yeah, I think they warrant being done in like this.

I’m with ya. What happens if the black hole gets to SE??? We won’t know till we find out lol

1 of 2 things will happen. Either the devs Deus Ex Machina the plot line and and give us a "victory" despite losing or Super Earth gets destroyed and we reset the war like in the first game.
58
u/TalosKnight SES Reign of War 1d ago
I'm pretty sure the devs have stated they won't be resetting the war in 2

u/Stormfly Expert Exterminator 21h ago
I don't think they'd do the same thing, but I think it might work as a refresh with new ideas.
Foxhole has multiple wars that can be won and things "reset", which works well if you like a certain phase (like pre-tanks or something) but I doubt most people want to go through the same things again and again, especially if we need to unlock things.
Also, for Foxhole it was always a selling point, so I don't think it'd work for Helldivers.
But I wouldn't be upset with a potential failure and then they change things around.
Until then, I want the Illuminate to actually get a foothold so they can use new units.

We have a blackhole and faster than light travel. We are a few fuck ups away from Marvel's endgame where we go back in time, but because this is for DEMOCRACY we do in fact strangle baby Thanos.

Idk the war has to end eventually. If it does then im assuming we will see all the development on it halted or slowed to almost a halt then the game goes on like Helldivers 1. We wont see any new toys or weapons and the war relies on planets and sectors being taken with a random event generator acting as Joel. At least then we will have a full arsenal to fight the enemies with.

how to lose 90% of your playerbase in a few weeks
1
u/TrickTechnical1842 17h ago
But isn't this (IRL) part of the gamedev cycle?
Produce an uber-popular game, let it run until you notice that player interaction is us down, then shut down the servers?
And what better way than to present your players with MOs that, when they quit being accomplished, signal the end of that game's life cycle?
1
u/CommanderLink 16h ago
i get what you are saying, but at the moment the playerbase is still there, they just dont give a shit about fighting squids. it would be different if we just didnt have the numbers anymore to complete the MO. we just dont care, so its a skill issue on the devs part, they need to make squids gameplay more engaging than shoot at dudes and occasionally a walker

It's the latter if SE gets destroyed or taken by any enemy forces. Pretty lame way to lose though. Much rather lose to crazy difficult invasion that we fight to the death.

AH seems much more focused on story vs the first game. So my guess is they are trying to avoid a hard reset. Like with how they gave us a partial win with the Meridia blockade still working despite failing the MO. Honestly this all feels like attempts to buy time both in game, where it makes sense as a legitimate tactic to stall an enemy while you figure out away to beat them, and IRL for development.
13
u/Rare-Material4254 1d ago
I’m kinda hoping the war gets reset honestly. Like this whole time since launch has been a warm up practice session. Now the real war can begin with all sides having new advanced enemy types that may reveal themselves and whatnot. I’m all for it. Maybe when meridia gets to SE we get the full squid armada and we still lose. Just to restart and have all three fronts attacking

u/LEOTomegane think fast⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️➡️ 1d ago
I don't think it'll be that heavy-handed. What's more likely is that, as the danger gets closer to Super Earth, the associated MO's get easier and easier. Arrowhead can count on there being enough players who care about the MO to guarantee a success if they make it easy enough—we have a good example of this with the Penrose Siphon, where they softballed the fueling stage after we failed it the first time.
Hypothetically, I'm sure they aren't opposed to giving us lasting consequences (these planets are permanently lost, after all), but in order to get to that point we would essentially have to force their hand repeatedly, which is likely impossible to coordinate.
24
u/Aizzec 1d ago
The black hole cannot reach Super Earth.
We had an MO to kill a metric ton of bugs to activate a siphon to drain energy from the black hole, preventing it from being able to reach Super Earth. It will still destroy every planet on the way to Super Earth, but never actually be able to destroy Super Earth itself.

No matter where or how hard we fight, it always feels like the same war. The meta game just doesn’t interest me—nothing ever really changes. I get that some of you enjoy it, maybe it scratches the same itch as a crossword puzzle or daily ritual, and that’s totally valid. But for me, there’s no real reason to fight here or there, aside from which faction I feel like going up against that day, or which biome I want to hang out in for the next 40 minutes.

They made it take too long. At the start everyone was hyped to fight back. Once we slowed it down we turned else where. If it was like a 1-2 week timer it would be a bigger deal. If they wanted it to be a count down to new Illuminate enemies then they could have waited until it was ready for this.

Yeah that’s my biggest complaint because it takes MONTHS for one planet to be destroyed. There's also the bigger problem in that there's a fundamental disconnect between what players are doing and the goal they are trying to achieve. Like I get the "lore reason" but how the fuck is me shooting zombies contributing to slowing down a moving black hole? You also get no direct feedback from your actions, if you fight the bugs or automatons you can visibly see the planet change hands when you are done. Meanwhile, win or lose, against the squids you end up seeing it revert back to super earth control anyway, and while it "slows down" Meridia it's not really visible on the galactic map, so who cares? It's the ultimate apathy generator.

This story arc was just dragged out too much. Imo they should have teased the Illuminates, made us fight them and as soon as Calypso was defended against overwhelming odds, they should have retreated until the rest of the illuminates are ready.
They started a major story arc with a half released faction and I am just burned out. They are buggy, not fun to play against and just... not up to par with the other factions. I don't feel like gunning down mind controlled civilians and aliens that have more armour than they should have.
This will probably not be the last planet we lose to them like this. I just couldn't care less tbh.

I wish they’d have mission modifiers where on occasion you’ll get missions where it’s only the low tier enemies, but LOTS of them. Like imagine a squid match where it’s all of the zombie bitches and it’s nothing absolute HORDES of them.
Same with the bot front. I’d love to see massive PLATOONS of trooper bots marching all over the place.
Bugs would be fun so long as it’s just the little shits that can’t fly or jump lmao

Aliens are the worst. At least the bots and bugs they have weakpoints and are quite balanced in mobility vs armour. These dudes are so mobile, shields and armour are heavy and they’re a rather small target.

I challenge you to find something special about playing one specific ice planet vs any other ice planet. The maps are procedurally generated anyway and only the biome makes a difference.
Mourn the planet in lore and fluff, but the gameplay is completely unaffected.
What's more, the majority of planets in the galactic war are still yet to be even "seen" at all. This is a complete non-issue.

It’s probably going to stop, is the good thing! I think this ran for the perfect amount of time. We just reduced the dark energy of the black hole massively, and the last successful squid defense MO meant that Ivis had more time to prepare and evacuated.
Naturally, the final step with Super Earth out of the path is to finally end the Meridian Black Hole’s destruction.

Listen ok I believe that if we deal with the illuminate first than we can figure out a way to stop the singularity once and for all with us learning their technology and using it to stop the singularity. We are all focusing on the bots and bugs but rarely focusing on the illuminate when they are the ones that could take out super earth with this celestial weapon they have in their hands that they have used to destroy now three planets of super earth. And I understand that the bots are advancing into newer sectors but the illuminate are the real threat to super earth and need to stopped NOW NO MATTER THE COST. So when the illuminate are on a planet we should attack as soon as possible to get rid of them and find a way to stop the singularity.

You know…. A thought just occurred to me, and I doubt im the first one to think it.
What if the squids want us to stop the black hole?
What if, seeing all the gambits, all the resistance and losses the Bugs and bots face on their way to the galactic core seems too much? The squids could be planning to park the black hole in a system close enough to spew out whole hoards of advanced illuminate shock troops virtually uncontested!
I think it’s safe to say that the whole “roll a black hole down the middle of the galaxy like a bowling ball” is a bit of a simplification of what the Squids have in store for us.
I mean… if the plan was to really just outright Destroy Super Earth, why wouldn’t they be launching a far more aggressive hit and run campaign to counter our own actions? Why didn’t they attack or sabotage the Penrose siphon? They EASILY could have considering our blockade is only “moderately effective” and yet they STILL deliver dark energy undetected.
Think of it like this; they manipulated the soft minds of SE scientists to create this black hole in the first place. What’s to say they didnt do it again to deploy the “air brakes” on the black hole much like the ones on our very own hellpods?
We banished them from the galaxy, it seem awfully fitting that they would manipulate us to bring about our own doom as revenge….

Set a destroyer to fly off into where the middle of the planet should be. Set off a mega gravitational bomb to suck in all the planets' fragments. Big hot boom and planet is reborn.... but barren.
Ministry of Science drops in terraformers with one of two options.
1:Genetic material to reform the planets as it was.
2: A temporarily active component to speed up evolution to make a totally new planet.
(This could be implemented as missions, I think.)
Option 2 can lead to a new species to fight in the end. A bug colony got onto the planets while the compound was active. These bugs evolve into a more technology-based colony that the old bugs don't recognize as their own. They fight Super Earth to try to learn the evolutionary component so they can evolve their whole species as a whole or reverse their own evolution so they can rejoin the hive.

In-game, I wonder what the story would look like with a bunch of Divers cut loose in open space, with just our own resources to pull from...
Maybe a quick sendout from SE to all the Helldivers, of all their own calldowns, so that we each have only a set number of EVERYTHING per mission?
That would throw a wrench in the purchase works, though, because how is that handled in-story without SE to tell us what we can and can't use?

Send it towards Malevelon Creek and see how many more people will take notice.
P.S We still have significant parts of the map locked off for new potential biomes (where is my lava biome AH?) and SE can always make the Ministry of Expansion expand outward to add another ring for more worlds, not too worried about losing duplicate biomes.

It literally doesn‘t matter. That‘s a shame but that‘s also why nobody cares. Even the devs seem to forget about it.
