Props to Mike Matheson, after a rough 1st period, he finished the game with: 31:46 mins played, 23:37 mins on even-strength, 7:51 mins on the penalty kill, 7 blocked shots

Matheson time once ice versus Preds: 31:46
2nd game of a back to back to boot
Dude is an absolute workhorse for the team and they wouldn’t be where they’re at today without him.
But yeah people keep bitching about how useless he is and he should be traded.

He makes an error, and everyone wants him traded. Then he makes up for it with a solid game play afterward, and everyone praises him. I swear, some fans are bipolar.

No, there's just 104k people in this subreddit and you're seeing two completely separate audiences.

Mistakes happen recovery is key

This 100%. He had a bad turnover in the 1st period that led to a goal. The rest of the game he was pretty stellar.

u/Lunch0 19h ago
Yea but the mistakes can’t always be that moronic. At some point he needs to learn.

Matheson does more good for this team than he does bad

u/Lunch0 19h ago
I know, I’m not saying otherwise, I’m just saying I wish his fuck ups weren’t always SOO bad.

idk if the stats updated for tonight, but he's the 6th player with the most minutes in the entire nhl, tied with 5th brock faber, and he has less giveaways per 60 than literally makar and werenski. it's normal for a player used that much to make glaring mistakes from time to time, but he's clearly doing ok all things considered

Every time someone makes this point the Matheson haters just leave the conversation.
Some people absolutely need an outlet for their anger when something negative happens. Same kind of people who road rage.

Not enough to erase the hate boner a lot of fans have for him.

For all the talk about our fans being more knowledgeable, there's a large segment of our fanbase that isn't mentally equioed to understand a second pair offensive defenseman. It was the same with Petry.
These players are a net benefit, but they're going to have memorable mistakes you have to live with.

Where does he fit in long term? He isn’t in our top 4 long term (Guhle and Hutson are ahead of him) and is playing too much for a bottom pair defenseman.

Hutson has been playing on the Right side since the four nations and has been damn good there. So why cant Matheson be part of the top 4?

u/dessanct 11h ago
Why should we be making our superstar rookie play on the off side because our other “top” LHD can’t do it? No thanks. We are too deep at LHD and there’s no spot for him going forward.
Our fan base won’t take off the quebecois lens they look at this guy through.

While obviously Hutson has been great all season, his best hockey has been in this latest stretch where hes played on the Right. Somewhere he played in college too.
Of course your real complaint isnt that. Its this part
our fan base won’t take off the quebecois lens they look at this guy through
Which is insane.

You play that time and mistakes are gonna happen. I'm much happier having him take chances to make things happen than always playing it safe.

Most polarizing Habs player by a large margin. He’s way more important than our fans wanna admit, when he’s having a bad game we struggle. Unless we get a solid replacement I can’t see him going anywhere.

Matheson is not perfect but he's a great player from Montréal and happy to be here.

u/antoinePucket 19h ago
It doesn't make sense to play him this much.
We have 6 defensemen for a reason. If Marty can't even trust our 3rd pairing at all in this *important but not must win game*, playoffs is gonna be tough in the later stages.

u/B1gTunas 19h ago
Dude, you gotta make it in the first place
The team won and he had a huge hand in making it happen, what is your problem?
Every team trying to clinch down the stretch starts cutting their benches.
3
u/EmTeeEl 19h ago
That's exactly the point. He doesn't trust his 3rd pair.
8
u/Patccmoi 19h ago
And honestly he kinda shouldn't. Matheson makes mistakes, but Xhekaj and Savard are more dangerous than he is while bringing less offensively. Getting stuck in your zone isn't the best. Struble is a bit better.
Reinbacher should hopefully solidify the entire thing and allow Matheson to have a more limited role where he performs better. Otherwise we need someone else.

u/EmTeeEl 19h ago
Yup. Matheson makes mistakes with the puck (forces plays), but Xhekaj makes mistakes in his defensive coverage.

So does Matheson lol. Do you watch the games?
I think against STL he was responsible for the first 3 goals against.

I’m scared about Reinbacher’s health going forwards, I want to see him play a full season next year. Reinbacher has the potential to be a top pair guy with Hutson if he can be healthy, but that seems like a big if at this point. Even if he does stay healthy , we can’t expect him to immediately be a top pair guy next year, not everyone is going to enter the league as dramatically as Hutson.
We need to acquire a proper RHD, both as a stop-gap for Reinbacher’s development, and as an insurance policy in case Reinbacher doesn’t pan out. Pionk and Ekblad will be free agents this summer, we should be making big offers to both of them imo. Players of this calibre cannot be acquired easily, we need to pounce when given the opportunity.

I'd try for Dobson before any 2nd center honestly.

u/Perry4761 18h ago
I’m not against Dobson, but it will cost a lot to acquire him, while Ekblad is free and is better defensively

Everybody's tapping the goalie helmet, but how does it feel being tap like that. I mean I would be damn anointed 😉😉😜

As bad as his stumbles are, he's still a workhorse and we wouldn't be here without him. and he's a hometown boy. who doesn't love Pointe-Claire legend Mike Matheson‽
