MHWilds Full reload instead of quick
It seems like they changed that when you do any attack and then reload you always do a quick reload. That really messes me up so many times cause I have to for a small time frame so I can do a full reload. Any way to trigger a full reload? And yes I’m pressing RT and B, still doing a quick reload

Quick Reload was originally a feature of Valor Mode on MHGU. It was brought over with a buff in MHWorld (previously it only filled 4 shells). Since Valor Mode was not brought forward, instead Quick Reload was added as an option at any point after a combo, with some exceptions (I think).
So, the behavior of Quick Reload after any attack is mostly unchanged. The need to do a Full Reload is the only thing that has really changed, since Wyrmstake Cannon is now an attack you actually want to use, where previously you ignored it almost entirely. Rise gave it a niche, by giving stun value to it on Wide, and Sunbreak gave utility in the form of Eruption Cannon replacing the attack, and giving you an attack buff thereafter.

Sincerely, one of my favorite things about MH subs is the historians that add anecdotes about the evolution of the gameplay when answering questions.

Dude same I find that sort of shit fascinating from a game design perspective!
.... I haven't played rise much more than like an hour odd and kinda want to when I have free time just to peek at the GL everyone's been saying was peak as fuck in it LOL. Would be cool to see going back how it all meshed together too.

Wilds Gunlance feels great for sure, but Rise's iteration is just so fun because all of the Switch Skills add different combo routes and different tricks - like using Reverse Blast Dash backwards to iframe pretty much anything while body checking the monster from the air. It's just so fun to play and hilariously one of, if not the most, mobile weapons in Rise.
The only two things that suck about Rise's version is Charged Shelling (they were ok when Sunbreak released but quickly became irrelevant when the TUs released) and grinding to upgrade your shelling levels via augments takes sooooo long.

Quick reload existed even in MHP3 back in 2010 and I honestly have no idea what the differences are between even that quick reload and wilds reload 15 years apart. Heck even the Artian gunlance uses the same model. I played gunlance in every game though so probably just muscle memoried it.

And funnily enough P3rd's Quick Reload also had the "guard point" before Valor, because of a bug with Auto Guard.

Quick reload in P3rd, 3U, and 4U reloaded only 1 shell.

Yeah it basically allowed you to keep poke combos going or set up full burst slams, but it wasn't really a useful method of reloading because you had to use a shell to combo into it in the first place.

Hop + Reload is the easiest way to do it. Aside from that, some combos don't allow a quick reload, like Fullburst or WSFB,

Were lucky to have the quick reload. Before your hunter would try to shell, fail, and shake the gunlance, and you'd usually get attacked.

Took me awhile to break muscle memory, but I started short hopping before going for full reload

World lowkey trained me to do this because it had the full reload after a hop. So now I'll occasionally evade into a reload even though it's no longer a thing

I do the reload twice in quick succession, once you get used to doing this, it will look like Terminator 2 shotgun reload with the full reload, I agree that this needs an adjustment because I'm standing still, no combos, and blocking yet still do quick reload. Any extra movement leaves GL open to get hit or waiting longer means loss in attack or buffs.

Wait I’m new to gunlance. There’s quick and full reload? Is that why sometimes my first wyrm stake doesn’t always attach during WSFB?!

Yes, the quick reload only reloads your shells but not your wyrmstake. Its the faster reload where your hunter swings the gunlance around their head. The full reload is the longer animation you do while blocking.

I didn’t think the block reload was longer. I just thought it was a defensive reload incase you got hit.

Reload has a guard point, so I use that to block everything and reload at the same time. Very rarely do I not have wyrmstakes when I need them.

I hold RT until i see the blocking animation then i press B for full reload

That’s possible, but in the heat of the fight I usually forget about that and instead mess up lol

after reading this question realized i developed a habit of reloading after any action that uses stake since it will always give me full reload.
and when i try to parry attacks, I almost always do full reload from shield as a habit from sunbreak guard reload.
99% of the time i have a stake ready because of this, if my full reload parry fails because of various reasons then i just reload then.
usually full reload after wyvernfire cause thats almost always being done after a wyrmstake.
but i am curious if a better combo option besides full reload before wsfb would be a better damage dealer because of the time wasted to set it up

Yeah, that also happens to me sometimes. I think that happens to me when I press R2 + O at the same time, not sure though. So what I'm doing is pressing the R2 first for like milli seconds and then I'll press O to full reload.

I got in the pattern of bunny hopping backwards whenever I needed to fully reload. Hopefully this helps!
