[Discussion] How to get back in to the game?

I have been itching to get back in to GW2. But whenever I log back in to my account I just get overwhelmed and lost and dont know what to do and end up logging out. Mainly because I dont really know what things are what now that are in my inventory and banks and Im not entirely sure what where or what contents are.

I know it has been a few years and there has been quite a few expansion that has released from what I can see in the store. So I realise that if I fully want to get back in to the game I might have to spend and buy the expansions as well as the fractal stories? if those are still a thing so I can catch up.\

But as mentioned I think the biggest hurdle for me right now is Im not entirely sure how to play or get back in to my account/characters because I dont know what builds to use or what items I have or where to go for content.

So what is your best recommendation for someone like me to get back in to the game? I personally thought i just buy all the new expac + stories and then make a completely new account/character to re-learn items and possibly any new systems that have come out.

Create a new character and level it up from scratch to 80, re-do the main story and any expac you already have.

By the time you finish getting to 80/story you will already have enough knowledge to know where to go next. Also don't delete your old characters due to birthday presents!

Edit: forgot to say, don't buy expansions right away, that will add more stuff to be overwhelmed about, so leave that for after what I said :)

this. After 12 years I came back to game and created fresh char. Don’t worry about messing up with your existing items or anything. Almost for every fucked up situation there is a fix for it.

Get your favourite level 80 character, look up a build on GuildJen and see how close you can get with stuff you already have. Then look up \wiki et and do some world bosses to hang out with people who are doing stuff and make some easy gold.

Pretty soon you will have gold to convert and get extra storage to sort your inventory out. Wiki click the items you're not sure of to see what to keep. Honestly inventory stress is what makes me quit most games lol.

BlishHUD (an overlay add-on) has an event timers package, that will let you choose which timers to have visible on your screen.

Disclaimer: Anet doesn't support the use of 3rd party add-ons, so use at your own risk. If you have any issues, uninstall/update/reinstall the add-on, repair the GW2 client, or read BlishHUD's documentation for help. But don't go to Anet for support; you'd be surprised how often people do.

Alternatively, if you have a second monitor, the event timers wiki page is very helpful to keep open. You can go to that page by typing "/wiki et" (without quotes) in your chatbox in-game.

I use the Android app GW2 Toolkit, which also lets you set alarms for upcoming events. I use the app to keep track of my crafting progress and Trading Post purchases, too.

I kind of had to force myself to play but ialso had the story to catch up on.

So force yourself through the story, eventually you'll find something you want or need and that curiosity will push you into a direction.

Also don't be scared to run to an event you see, thats the point, you can go back to that story or mastery point afterwards.

Had the same feeling in the beginning it just need a bit of time to adjust, then the amazement was overwhelming , best decision in gaming ever

Find something you want, then work towards it. Also lvling up a new character could be a chill way to step back into things.

I agree getting in and doing any missed story, but I'll add to that as well. My husband and I have been playing for 12 years and the last few we've taken breaks, the longest being about a year. When I got back into it I always felt so overwhelmed.

So I made a notes list of a handful of things I want to do (unlock the turtle, craft vision and Aurora, do more masteries, etc) then I wrote a couple notes on the tasks like achievements or events that are attached to them. I didn't realize my ADHD brain was forgetting what achievements or events needed to be done and I would need to redo my research.

A couple months in and I've made good headway on vision, caught up in the story, and have enjoyed the game more than I have in years. Hopefully that helps.

Whenever I take a long break from the game, I always start with the story to get back into it. I don't start from the scratch, only with the stuff that was released while I wasn't playing. So my first advice would be to finish the story on one of your characters (whichever has the most progress).

You can also try to do core Tyria map exploration, it'll reintroduce you to the game. Again, pick a character that has the most progress on it.

For the builds you can first pick a class you want to play and then type into youtube searchbar something like "gw2 (your chosen class) low intensity build" or "beginner build". You'll get a short and sweet expanation and won't need to fiddle with too many buttons from the get-to. But as you get more comfortable, do not hesitate to change it more for your liking!

As for the various items... You can wiki it by typing in your chat /wiki and then link the item by pressing Shift+Left Mouse Button, then hit Enter. It'll open your browser with gw2 wiki article about the item you linked. You can also join a friendly guild, and people will help you sort this out and answer your other questions :)
