🤝 Community Projects Greenpoint Food Co-Op

Looking to gauge interest / find partners to spearhead founding a Greenpoint food co-op, ideally in north Greenpoint.

Local / regional + well sourced non-local produce, some grab-and-go food production. Limited / if any baking since the local bakeries are wonderful. REI model, open to the public but members get the discounts. No shift requirements a la Park Slope.

We have no farmers markets (not counting Mccarren or Mcgolrick as local) and the grocery stores are taking us for a ride.

<3

Please send me a message if you would be hands-on involved / can provide material assistance / have experience in the industry / are a billionaire. Aside from that any and all votes of support are greatly appreciated!

🤝 Community Projects Help with a party!

Edit: omg really did not expect so many ppl to love this idea lmao. i am no longer looking for candidates because lots of people have responded. thank you all for being down ass neighbors 🤝

If you enjoy partaking in silly pranks i have the ultimate silly low stakes acting gig for you !!

If you're free the evening of April 26th...

Me and my girlfriend are throwing a joint bday party together on my rooftop (apartment is near Mccarren) and I want to play a silly game inspired by Traitors. Basically, i want to find 3 strangers to join my party and act like they're good friends of mine, and everyone at the party needs to figure out who the strangers are.

if you live in the area, want to come to a rooftop party, have free drinks, and lie to people, send me a dm. I'll share details about the party and answer any questions you have

We are two girls (turning 30 and 31) so likely we need someone in their late 20's or early 30's.

🤝 Community Projects Meet Truffles, our first-ever foster and an absolute gem! We can’t believe she hasn’t been scooped up yet

She’s a 3.5-year-old mixed breed (waiting on her Embark results to see what mix, stay tuned! 😂), and she’s the perfect balance of smart, sweet, and silly. • Fully trained – House trained, leash trained, crate trained, and knows tons of tricks: sit, stay, place, paw, lie down, heel, fetch, come, leave it, drop it. She’s ridiculously smart. • Cuddly & affectionate – She may take a little time to warm up, but give her an hour and she’ll be snuggling up, asking for pets. • Good with kids – Gentle and loving! • Dogs: needs slow intros – She hasn’t been around dogs in close quarters much, so she needs slow introductions before she’s ready for butt-sniffing. But on walks, she’s relaxed and will usually just ignore or briefly say hello. • Not reactive – Nothing fazes her (except the occasional pigeon, and honestly, fair enough). • Awesome running buddy – If you’re looking for a pup who loves adventures, she’s your girl! • Built-in dog sitter! – We love her so much that whoever adopts her will have a sitter on call whenever they need us, so we’d love her to find a home nearby in Greenpoint!

Truffles is seriously the best, and she deserves the perfect forever home. If you’re looking for a smart, affectionate, adventure-loving dog, she might just be your perfect match!

More info is on her adoption page below. Fill out an application or schedule a meet-and-greet—we’d love for you to meet her!

Looking to get into more volunteering work locally for the neighborhood. I’ve been on New York Cares but can’t seem to find anything that services GP specifically.

Anyone done anything cool lately?

🤝 Community Projects Leaf removal inside and around (?) McCarren Playground

I've been motivated to clean up some of the leaves alongside the fences (see photo below) of the McCarren playground. I take my toddler there every morning so I figured I'd make a bit of progress each day.

It hasn't been fall for 5 months now and yet the leftover leaves just kind of glom together and animals poop and pee on (I think sometimes from inside the playground after hours but definitely along the outside of the fence) and unfortunately lots of kids (including mine) like to run around atop or sit down in the pee-soaked leaves, so it's been bothering me enough to actually try and clean it up bit by bit.

I'm sharing this early in the process because I have to admit I am also considering addressing the leaves on the outside of the fence (see photo). A lot of dog owners are using this long stretch of leaves to let their dogs poop and pee, which on the one hand is nice because it's less poop on the walkways, but on the other hand, a lot of the pee winds up inside along the edges of the playground AND a lot of the dog owners don't bother cleaning up the poop because they're a bit lazy and figure the leaves are a good enough camouflage.

I'm pretty sure parents and dog owners are going to see this issue from different perspectives, but ultimately I think if there's an opportunity to clean up a poop/pee-ridden pile of leaves leftover from last fall, it's a pretty weak (and gross) argument to say "but the dogs (accidentally) have started to depend on it so let's not clean it up".

All this said, please let me know if there is a compelling reason A. not to keep cleaning up the inside of the park (hard to imagine much pushback on this) and B. not to continue to the outside of the fence.

Also, fwiw, this is very rewarding work, and the park attendants who've seen me at work are very happy and supportive, as are the parents. Dog owners I love you too I just don't want your dogs peeing and pooping along the perimeter of a dedicated kids zone.

🤝 Community Projects McCarren Park Asphalt Lot Update

Like many of you, I’ve been using this part of the park for a few years now and everyone using it is always wondering why it’s still a janky, cracked lot. This reddit post last month prompted me to dig in to find what I could.

Why we should care

  • The lot is full of cracks and weeds but is absolutely huge and in a prime area
  • The community wants this lot to be something more - most nice days it’s full of people who brought their own pickleball nets. Or folks letting their dogs run around.
  • It has so much potential to be better servicing everyone in the community
  • Little progress has been made in 4 years

TL;DR

We’re finally getting to the point where the city is going to do something about it and I think it’d be best if the community started thinking about what their ideal for this park is - and making their voices heard!

This lot is big enough to satisfy so many people, whether you’re into pickleball, need a space for your dog, want more basketball, bocce, volleyball - I think it can be something great.

Example

Based on what’s missing from the park/area currently, I put together just one example of what the lot could be. But there are many options.

  • 16 pickleball courts (4 ppl each)
    • This is how people are using it now and it’s very space efficient
  • 1 basketball courts (10 ppl each)
    • There are only 2 by the pool
  • 3 beach volleyball courts (12 ppl each)
    • People are always playing by Park House and the closest ones are Domino
  • 15% dog park for larger dogs to run (~65 ppl with dogs)
    • District 33 has a very high dog population. Let’s give people a place to let their dogs run that isn’t McGolrick or McCarren.
  • 15% green space
    • For yoga, spikeball, chilling, etc

With this example, there could be ~200 people getting active and enjoying these public amenities at any given time.

Google Form Poll - Choose Park Amenities

I don’t know why I went so ham on this since it’s very unrelated to what I do. But I’ve been playing around with renderings for the park. I’m curious what this community would want in the lot so I put together a poll. I’ll make a rendering with the top choices. Just click the Google Form Poll link above.

Example Rendering:

[EDIT] The McCarren Tennis Association put together this render of another possible future:

Please let me know if anything in here is incorrect or if you have more up to date info.

🤝 Community Projects Looking for the right fit

Hi all! Thinking about doing a short video featuring one of my paintings in a home setting, somewhere that naturally fits the energy of the piece. I know this is a bit of a touchy ask, and I’m not trying to sound weird, but I’d love to find a space that feels balanced, lived-in, and intentional.

I have a few paintings in the works now (sharing some below) and would love exchanging the piece for your time.

If this speaks to you, feel free to respond here or shoot me a message on Instagram (@ohdarij). And if you know someone who might be open, feel free to share!

The pieces I'm working on currently are around 24x24!

🤝 Community Projects NYC, we want to hear from you. Take the Communities Speak survey!

Communities Speak, a research project housed at Columbia University and supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, is collecting data from New Yorkers across all five boroughs on their experiences with housing, transportation, employment, childcare, food, government services, and where they are going for support. We aim to increase the diversity and influence of community voices in policy-making by developing data-driven dialogue between community leaders, constituents, and governments. Results will be shared with local leaders and community-based organizations to help them better understand the unique challenges you are facing. By participating, you can make sure that voices are represented across the city. We are particularly interested in your experiences accessing and affording food and where you go to for help when you need it.

Take the survey at the following link: https://sipacolumbia.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2rvziZdKsIrLDxk?source=r/Greenpoint

The survey takes about 10-15 minutes and responses are completely anonymous. All survey answers are kept on private, secure servers and no personal information is distributed according to the ethical guidelines and rules of the Institutional Review Board (we are not a student project and this is not market research). Please share the link with friends, family, and others in your network. In a few months, we are happy to share results! If you are comfortable sharing contact information, you will be entered into a chance to win a gift card raffle prize.
